This is awesome advice! I will study this and implement this. I thought I was doing well at setting up routes but this really clicked with me! Thank you Brian!
Brian's Lawn Maintenance nice video I watch your videos and I really learn a lot. I'm starting my lawncare business in 2020 you have been very helpful. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work I will continue to watch your videos so I can learn from the best.
Route density is key. We used the postal service mailing routes on their website to find the neighborhoods in our town with the highest avg income in our town and used that info to help focus our advertising efforts. Surprisingly it wasn’t the neighborhood across town with the biggest houses but it was an old neighborhood with modest houses. We picked up 11 yards in that neighborhood so far in the past year.
Lesson Learned!! I watch this video periodically just to stay on my toes and business minded. Definitely going to firmly apply this method staring this season. Thanks for the knowledge again 😆.
Talking to people and being friendly can lead to tons of opportunities. What always works for me is actually meeting people, shacking there hand and been honest...they will love you! Another great video Brian good points as always!!!
This is business 101...Great tips for people just getting started..i remember when i first started i would sometimes drive 45 minutes to a hour away from my shop but i also had 20 clients to tend to and in 6 to 7 hours i was back at the shop...a buddy was 15 minutes away from that area ..he had the same scenario with clients in my area...we swapped that 1 day of clients with each other and both made a couple dollars more...it's all about density of clients ..the closer your route is together the more clients you can service in a days time...and as we say in this business ..Time Is Money
I only still growing the company , and many of my new customers want clean ups before a maintenance mow . I tend to get the customers as weekly afterward , but the clean ups are taking thier time . Finding density isn’t the problem , it is rain , the grass growing , and just getting the numbers of regular customers up . I only just got my first ride on this week. Looked at a trailer today , didn’t buy it . But this channel is def helping me learn
I've watched this Video several times I've been trying to Shrink my route And just do My towns that I live in And I live on a corner of a busy street I put my signs out there And I'm surprised on how many people noticed Them Great video
Brian this is simply a no brainer with yardbooks... They have improved my routes and route density with the optimized map feature. Great video.. I honestly am a 1 man operation but they’ve helped me improve a total profit of + $100 daily (less windshield time). You rock!!!!
I am going to study this video so much. I appreciate this video Brian!!! I don't have enough yards to have a perfect route down get. But the day I do this video will be why. These videos are very helpful thanks Brian!
I know this is an old video but i started working with a friend of my dads for about 5 years now doing lawns, When i first started we were working 5 days I did some route changes and stuff for him and told him to give it a shot we eliminated a whole day doing the same amount of yards cause he was just all over the place.
Excellent video brotato!! Like you said being rural it's a lil bit harder to be extremely dense like this example. Now one of my colleagues does lawns in different towns each day. It's enough to keep him out til about 6 or so each night
I knew I wasn't making what I could I never thought about looking at a map and gridding the nicer subdivisions. And marketing yourself in that certian area. Definitely going to keep watching your channel. Thanks brother
Have you thought of offering an incentive program? Ie.. If your target area customers refer a new customer to you they get a discount per customer added. Just a thought might help get your density up. Great video and I have been binge watching all your content! Keep it up bud!
That's exactly how mine is my first year but I'm starting to get them closer together and shying away from bi weekly yards it seems that's what every customer wants at first lol
This is one thing I have been thinking about lately is my route density. I feel like I’m driving too much. This is my first year full time do i was trying to just pick them up where I can. I’m a little different from you though cause I live in the country and have multiple properties that pay over $200 to get their grass cut. But I’m definitely seeing the benefits of the subdivision game. I also know that I’m not going to build huge route density my first year, I just need to be patient.
Thanks for the video Brian. I have most of my customers between 1-2 miles from farthest to the closest! This is my 5th season! It took me 4 seasons to get the rout so close to each other! You are right on target with your suggestions! God bless!
Awesome advice. I would love to use this strategy. However I mow for a Real estate company that and they are all rehab properties. I pick up a few here and there in the same neighborhood that stop me and ask me to mow there's too. The windshield time sucks but I factor in the drive time in my pricing when the property company send me an address. The great part about doing these properties is I only have to invoice one customer for 50+ lawns and there are no homeowners in them. I will use your strategies if I ever lose this client for sure.
Hire the post office to deliver flyers in those desirable subdivisions. Find those clusters of subdivisions and hit them hard. I gave 1 customer 1 freebie a month in exchange for 10 of his neighbors signing up. I played hard on his tight wad character and let him recruit those 10 which leads to more. Great video as always Brian!
Would like to see a video on some tips and tricks using yardbook. I have been using it a couple of months and it seems like I am doing my invoicing the long way. I charge a card on file per cut. Pretty sure I am doing it the hard way.
4th year here full time. It’s does take a couple years to get density im finding that it’s getting easier each year. I do have an enclosed trailer with the company signage which is huge for advertising
Great video Brian!!! This one makes me think about how I can really improve my business and also how to continue to grow it in the future. Keep up the awesome videos!!!
How about a route that goes out a 20 mins or so but you have tons of lawns along the way and back. I do agree with you. here in florida everything is far away
I have to try this out I know it’s a slow process but eventually it will work. Funny today I drive that 25 minute drive to mow 9 yards 2 big ones. I have to check out the income part and really try it out.
Thanks for these tips cuz I was beginning to feel like I was playing hop scotch....truth be told: my mechanic was trying to get me to do this but I thought I was sonic 😅 now my knees hurt a lil...#dontquitjustmow
you also have to define ur long game, if u want it to be just you, keep everything within a mile u can do, if u want to grow have several tucks, grab the 14k subdivisions, fill in around have multiple crews.
I always felt like it was ok to be all over town, but ONLY IF you have more than one crew so EACH CREW would have a dense route. Each crew should be focused in a certain area, and then that crew will build relationships with the residents within their respective areas
Great video I'm doing 25lawns bi-weekly it's 100miles total route I get ten miles per gallon fifty dollar lawns thank god for add-ons services great video any suggestions on my route I live ten miles away from my route area.. Cut them all in 3days and wrap up with surprise jobs on thirdday
Bro, I just realized I forgot to subscribe to your channel. I follow on Instagram and watch your RUclips and totally forgot that I didn’t subscribe. NowI am.
Hey where did you get that shirt? Yup 4.5 miles 3 basic neighborhoods. Never sit in the truck unless the air conditioning is on haha. I have never understood companies that go way out of their way to do properties. Great vid.
Thank you Brian. I’m 3 1/2 months into starting my business and your videos help so much. I’m in Anaheim California and this video was exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks again👍
My dad did grading and excavation and finished landscaping an he did that all his life all over the county an in a few other county's an he had a great buisness, I guess doing that is different from just mowing lawns . Am I right?
Yeah if you got lawns all over you can’t even drive to all 40 lawns in one day lol. This is something that comes later in the business I think bc at the beginning you grabbing whatever you can. But it’s definitely good to plant that seed early on and keep it in mind moving forward. Would you say it’s a bad idea to drive one area each day and post up there for the day? For me I don’t live in a neighborhood area. I have to drive there. So my best option is to go to the neighborhoods and build them up by the day. I always just hate to tell people I can’t be there till another day when I could get to them now. I feel like if I wait someone else will come before me. One of my 2019 goals is to say no more and have more control of what I do.
This is great. You obviously know your stuff. But not sure here in the country that it works quite like this. Any tips? Live in a town called Andover Ohio.
Without a doubt this is how it has to be done You have to treat every customer the same and quality control consistent pricing also It only takes one dissatisfied customer to visit the rest of your accounts they're all in walking distance And you know how Petty this stuff could be
Just looked up yardbook. They are #9 out of 10. 🤷♂️ did u switch over or u feel they are still the best. Razor ,jobber, Verizon and then service autopilot are the top 4. 👍 commenting from NOLA ⚜
When you go to enter materials that you used for a job, say $150.00 for mulch. Do you take that $150.00 and add it to your expenses or do you just leave it in the estimate/invoice when you go to bill the customer? I'm currently using yardbook but I want to make sure I am putting things in correctly where they need go.
Hey Brian - fantastic video. I'm thinking about starting up a lawn care business over here in the UK. Going through some horticulture exams first though. There's no-one or even nothing to give you this sort of information on the business side of things, which would probably take YEARS to get on your own - so thanks for all the information and advice. Do you know if Yardbooks just operates in America, or do they cover the UK too. Thanks again Brian.
What if the subdivisions in your town have signs prohibiting solicitation, how do you deal with that? Do you ignore them and risk a fine from the city or is there an alternative that I am overlooking?
Hey Brian what do you think about a different city each day. Like 25 Customers in Farmington on Monday 25 Customers in livonia on Tuesday 25 Customers in northville on Wednesday and so on. But Dense routes within those days and cities.
I think that my rote don't need to change my rote because I cut 50 yards day 5 days a week 250 yards a week, I have WIFI in my 2019 chevy 6500HD dump truck and I have a hp laptop in the truck with my Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday rote pulled up so all I have to do is look at my computer then I can go to the rote!
@BriansLawnMaintenance awesome thanks! My husband is taking over his cousins business he worked it this year and planning to buy it next year. He is currently doing about 95 a week on his own. Do you have advice on buying the business? We are planning on him scaling the lawns back a bit and condensing routes. And spreading services into the fall and winter. So he can be home before 7 or 8. Any advice is welcome just trying to get started! I have Really learned a lot from your videos.

I mean nicer homes and nicer subdivisions in 2020+ it's almost a prerequisite. Life is too expensive to have the American dream on 1 income.
