Having grown up in the backseat of an old capri with those lovely shark grey half leather recaros, they were so comfy and being a great classic style seat! Shame about bankruptcy
Typically when private equity firms get involved in your business, it does not end well for you. They are never interested in your longevity just making money asap.
Typical issue is that the PE firm only uses a portion of its own equity to buy the company and funds the remaining purchase price with debt. Usually this debt comes with interest rates at the high end of the market which puts the newly acquired company onto a treadmill where it has to make its targets every month to pay its loan repayments and is not able to build up enough surplus cash to invest in new products or upgrade equipment or infrastructure. Then when interest rates rise the company can no longer make its loan payments and to every outsiders surprise, a company seeming to have a steady supply of customer orders suddenly goes belly up.
@@johnmcdermott5505 correct, they frequently look to pension funds to invest in their schemes while forcing the company to liquidate or sell off and lease back any capital assets they might have as a means to extract their own original PE contribution asap. Then apply monthly professional management fees as they put someone on the board to allegedly give a corporate level of management oversight and guidance. All these actions leave a business trying to build a pipeline or extend their product base with limited capital as you say. The PE then look for other M&A activities to build the business into a bigger organisation faster while continuing to market it for sale, now with an increased customer base and product line recently acquired for an inflated value.
Recaro 😮 I wonder if it's a symptom of modern cars in general. The days where we modified our cars has become less common than back in the 80s and 90s max power era. So sad
Yup more cars than ever otr world wide(well suvs cuvs and pickups at any rate) And less passion for modifying or customizing your ride than at anytime I've ever seen since getting into cars and modding them ipback in the 90s. I ran a car repair shop and I'd say 3-5% of my customers cared at all for their cars beyond treating them like appliances.
Oh so sad , only ever had one car with Recaros , an Opel Manta GTE , classic yellow tartan trim . I now have an ND Mazda MX 5 , only mod I really want is a pair of Recaros , but firstly can’t find , and secondly price lucky buyers have had to pay . Looks like I’ll never get now .
It’s really sad that these brands a lot of us have enjoyed and love are struggling and closing. Sir Pete your videos are definitely great! Keep up the great work
Such a shame about Recaro. Made seats for what seems like ever, Hope everyone is well and enjoying the weather. Pete, hope you have an aircon unit in your new man cave!!
They will easily find new investors willing to inject some money in the business particularly with the history and heritage. Although there airline seat producing side of the business is quite successful. You have probably sat in a Recaro airline seat without realising.
I fear for most things these days. Everything is fucked. Here in Australia we have lost and shutdown bloody well everything. 7 years ago you could get a full size sedan, rear wheel drive V8 Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon for 40K to 60K AUD, so lets say 25 to 35K pounds. Now a basic Golf is 42K AUD. We have been homogenising everything for the past 30-35 years and everyone, everywhere is loosing/has lost their 'identity'. Thanks for the videos. Cheers from Australia.
My 2019 Ford Focus ST had Recaro seats, which I absolutely loved. Same for other Ford ST models. When they face lifted the ST range a couple of years ago, Ford changed to ‘Ford Performance’ seats. That’s a big loss for Recaro just from one manufacturer.
Hi Pete, I fear that with all the safety legislation, and car makers having to install lots of electronic wizardry we are entering an era were all cars are very similar, with no sc ope for individual design flair, leaving people like Recaro abandoned! The sea of the disposable car, too expensive to repair !
Loved it when the Grand Prix was either at Silverstone and/or Brands Hatch, loved Paddock Hill Bend. I'll never forget Keke Rosberg flying through there sideways in the Williams-Honda FW11 at the Grand Prix of Europe in 1985, the speed trap on the approach was over 170 MPH, amazing. It was Our Nige's first Grand Prix win. Surprised that Recaro and BBS are in big trouble, its just the car seat division, not aero and stadium seats. I'm not sure all car manufacturers are going to survive, there were too many before the Chinese turned up, my money is on Ford pulling out of Europe
That’s a shock - recaro have always been THE seat for sporty or modified cars. Miss the ones in my dad’s old GTi massively. Staple if the car scene gone there, shame.
Recaro has been on a downward spiral since 2011 when they sold off the automotive seat rights. The american owned company cut costs and thus quality. They were really cooking on gas in the 80's and 90's under Keiper. Back then, most of their turnover and profit was from their OE supply to companies like Porsche and Mercedes. The aftermarket sports seats was a very small piece of the business. Take the outer cover off a bog standard seat from a W124 Mercedes and you will find the Recaro logo inside. Unfortunately most OE manufacturers have been reducing their outsourced items to lower overheads. Recaro only needed to lose one OE car manufacturer as a customer and they became doomed.
I think one of the problems is that people don´t modify their cars as much these days like they used to. Cause you have so many options when you buy it as new compared to what you had 15-20 years ago. So that might be the reason that some nufacturers that are mostly known for aftermarket parts struggle.
Recaro has a couple of side businesses though. Aircraft seats (both economy & business, with several airlines as customers)., and they even make gaming seats. Maybe Boeings production and delivery issues play a part here.
I have always loved the look of Recaro seats but have only ever owned 1 with them in which I still have, a 2016 MX5 Recaro Sport, and the seats are ace 🙂
Sad about Recaro. I think they were part of Porsche for a while. I wonder if these established companies are falling by the wayside due to cheaper overseas parts or the fact that modern cars are less customisable due to the tech.
Best corner Moss Corner named after the race car great known as Stirling !!! Corner located at Mosport International Raceway just outside of Toronto 🇨🇦!!
Better corner than Eau Rouge? Skyline at Bathurst; launch yourself off the top, at at full noise with no view of the road dropping away below you. You just hope it was where it was in the last lap.😂
Great MW180 thanks. Yes Spa amazing circuit, lucky enough to have been there watching from Pouhon for the epic 1998 race with rain, first lap chaos, Schumacher Coulthard incident and Jordan 1-2. First sight of the track was from the bottom of Eau Rouge - unbelievable. Great race this year - Russell was in my Fantasy F1 line-up - unlucky! If all MX5s were fitted with Recaro seats I might (just) have been tempted in favour my 718. Shame just a few models (2016 Recaro and 2019 Anniversary) are specced with Recaros rather than the (IMO) very unsupportive standard MX5 seats. Could have made the difference - there are a LOT of MX5s out there.
Re Recaro: its not surprising considering UK and EU governments pushing EVs and the cessation of IEC cars from 2030. Car manufacturers are suffering badly as result of the non take up of EVs. I'm sure UK and EU car manufacturers will all go back and start making ICE cars again just to stay in business.
First EVs have seats second they are being taken up very well thanks. Some legacy car makers are heading for bankruptcy as they do not know how to make good EVs. That is where the slaughter will be.
I look forward to Friday to see what you have to say. I have my fears over the future of Jaguar. I can't believe Recaro may be no longer. Surely someone will buy the name and take it onwards.
Was gutted for Russell in part, because as you say, at spa, they come round la source and come in top it’s before the run down to eat rouge. So no chance to pick up rubber. BUT it’s the same for all finishers, and none of them were found to be under weight except Russell, sotheres more to it. I understand there’s the possibility it’s a combination of tyres, as he was on a one stop, plank wear (maybe his plank wore more because his tyres were more worn so car bottomed out through ear rouge more) and he lost weight.
Eau rouge is the best corner in racing. Still hoping that Adrien Newey ends up at Ferrari!! As for Recaro, I do believe that the manufacturers are trying to increase their profits without large price increases as consumers are at the limit on cost. So, I do believe that manufacturers are bringing more of the third party parts in house, such as wheels in particular (would explain BBS difficulties) and Recaro. Just my two cents
I think a lot of car manufacturers are going to go out of business in 10 -15 years with government and the sodding EU which we are no longer part of forcing them to build electric cars that ordinary people neither want or can afford. Audi saying that from 2033 they will only sell electric cars both used and new could well be the first of many to go out of business
Probably due to NOT being in the EU, adding bureaucracy to the process, needing to certify for multiple markets and losing EU customers. Radical thought eh?
