"I'm not an expert, I'm a practitioner, I'm practicing to be an expert" words to live by! I love his encyclopedic knowledge of drumming history and music. He seems completely lost in the art and act of music. Funny when you mentioned the value of the Brackeen album, he lit up for a moment and went back into the music.. the true value was the music, not the money! thank you for his fantastic insight..

Saw the Chic Freeman Quartet at Ronnie Scott's club in April 1986 ? First thing I noticed was when I got to the club was Kenny Barron was in the band . I had been listening to Sphere the band that recorded a whole LP of Thelonius Monk tunes . Loved that LP so went up to Kenny in the bar and said how much I enjoyed that recording, I then noticed a serious looking man nearby with an African medallion necklace. Didn't know who he was but had the thought that you don't say anything silly to this guy . He was Freddie Waits , the band took to the stand and played music on another level . I became an instant fan of this new music and was in The Virgin Megastore a few weeks later and saw the Jack Dejohnette new LP The Piano Album with Freddie Waits on Drums . Brilliant record . One of the greatest drummers I ever saw live , Freddie Waits was a master

Yes he was, love Freddie Waits!!! If you ever heard Stevie Wonder’s Fingertips, Maestro Waits is the drummer there too! His Son Nasheet Waits continues his fabulous drumming tradition 🥁🥁🥁

Would have loved to hear him speak about Billy Parker's fourth world freedom of speech recording! That is one of the greatest Strata East recordings of all time and the only album drummer Billy Parker ever released as a leader! It is a complete and total masterpiece from start to finish!
