F-117 Nighthawk Shootdown over Serbia, 1999 - Animated

- During the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, a USAF F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft conducts a strike mission into Serbia. Notably difficult to detect on radar, the commander of a Serbian Surface to Air Missile battery knows the Nighthawk is coming, but the aircraft's stealth technology "should" make the engagement almost impossible.

The remnants of the F117 are now displayed in the Belgrade aviation museum. Plus, the Serbs examined the aircraft and the Americans made no attempt to destroy the remains of the plane because it used obsolete equipment

There is not a video we dont like, keep it up!
A "CUB" rocket similar to this "NEVA" rocket that hit the invisible F-117 has 30% TNT and 70% hexogen and is
coated with metal balls and explodes if something enters its radar range of 50 meters in radius so
it is impossible for a rocket to explode in the air without a cloud of shrapnel hitting something
It has a range of 22-23 km per parabola with additional air charge 25km and 12km in height,
your planes flew a little above that limit.
My PVO battery fired about 20 rockets and 15 exploded, but a large number, although hit, your plains
managed to cross the border into Bosnia or Croatia. After each successful shooting, we went
through the fields looking for the remains of rockets or planes.
We had a plastic tube that spun and radiated like radar and a wood burning stove "smederevac"
that we filled with wood that mimicked a power generator. Dozens of anti-radar missiles were fired at that false position
3-5 km behind the false positions were batteries that were really shooting
You did not destroy our airforce runway in Batajnica, even though it was bombed every day,
because you were shooting nylon stretched 50 meters next to the runway while the runway was
covered with soil and nailon was changed after each bombing driving you crazy..
After 50 days from the beginning of the bombing, we stopped hiding and cleaned the rockets under alert in the
middle of a sunny day. There were reports from NATO when and where it would be bombed.
It is sad that a country's economy survives by starting armed conflicts around the world
and making a living from arms sales. That is what is currently happening in Ukraine among other geopolitical issues,
such as the threat to Russia's anti-missile shield...

When stealth was in its infancy! Stealth has come along ways since then, yet still a cat and mouse game.
I have to give respect to the guy commanding the SAM battery. That's a great example of using your strengths against and enemy's weakness and not giving up just because you're outgunned. It's awesome the the he and the pilot both survived the war and remain friendly. Nothing personal, just two professional soldiers doing their duty to the best of their abilities.
Honestly if he had been armed with a stopwatch and a slingshot I think he had the determination and the US the complacency to take down the stealth fighter
What's happening right now over at Eastern Europe is a testament to that.
When you’re a soldier you are constantly told that the enemy hates you, wants to bomb your city, kill you and your sons and then rape your wives and daughters.

This is an example of why stealth is not an excuse to just get lazy when executing strikes in a contested environment. The combination of factors leading up to this shoot-down, like flying the same corridors over and over an the lack of EW, lead the SAM operator to get the jump on the F-117 (props to that guy). Stealth should be used in conjunction with other techniques to increase the survivability of aircraft.

They even bombed an open-air marketplace, full of people buying groceries, and with cluster munitions. But it's fine cos NATO is a defensive alliance.. from wiki:
The bombing caused damage to bridges, roads and railway tracks, as well as to 25,000 homes, 69 schools and 176 cultural monuments.[180] Furthemore, 19 hospitals and 20 health centers were damaged, including the University Hospital Center Dr Dragiša Mišović.[181][182] NATO bombing also resulted in the damaging of medieval monuments, such as Gračanica Monastery, the Patriarchate of Peć and the Visoki Dečani, which are on the UNESCO's World Heritage list today.[183] The Avala Tower, one of the most popular symbols of Belgrade, Serbia's capital, was destroyed during the bombing
As for that bomb bay door narrative, which has been widely accepted and told again and again. I don't know how do you justify the second one hit?
again wiki:
American sources state that a second F-117 was targeted and damaged during the campaign, allegedly on 30 April 1999. The aircraft returned to Spangdahlem base, but it supposedly never flew again. However, the USAF continued to use the F-117 during Allied Force

"Flying the same flightpath"
They didn't learn from Operation Linebacker I guess.

It was bad excuse
F-117 use(d) a recorded (via computers) pre-flight path which pilot just oversees (autopilot does the actual flying), and he (the pilot) only takes complete control when it's close to target to release the ordinance.
One more important thing to add: The sizes and shapes of the F117 was more or less public - This is why commander Zoltan Dani was able to fine-tune the radio locator to the aircraft. (He was investigating on the plane from '98 onward, he calculated the necessary frequencies to monitor it and he did the frequency-altering without permission on one of his radar's frequency. After that his SAM battery was able to follow the F117's when those were in range).
Zoltan was nowhere near to his unit. Actual radar tracking and missile launch was done by Djordje Anicic and his colleagues. Zoltan was accredited with this kill only because he was commanding officer. Find book SMENA ( Shift) by Djordje Anicic and find the truth.

Worked for a while with the guy that was his wingman that mission - he was generally tight lipped about the incident, but did say that that was the third consecutive night flying the exact same profile. He also told a tale of an epsiode of losing IFF near Aviano, and opening the bay doors so radar could see them.
On a visit in Germany, also got a chance to speak to former East German SAM operators, that related that the radars were not their only trick - and when the attack angle/route of the targets was known of surmised. they often used visual tracking before turning on the trackers at the last moment, when it was too late for the targets to evade. They mentioned that it was one of their highest percentage tactics (exercise scoring).
Optical targeting is becoming increasingly sophisticated and capable. AI monitoring huge camera networks and flagging items of interest in live video feeds is already a thing. Optical sensors can see quite far under some conditions. Could soon be a more challenging environment for stealth aircraft.
They wait airplane to came in cone of 15 to 10 km from SAM battery, in that zone there is no way to escape missile, now they use Pantcirs but tactic is the same, old S125 got new thermovisions for passive scanning the sky.
Bay doors were never opened. That is a USAF LIE to justify a clean shot. And it was the second night not the third. Again deliberate lie.

This shows how important the Prowler was when it was in service. Highly underrated aircraft and it doesn't fly for the Air Force.
All things considered it was probably a mistake for the US Air Force to retire the EF-111 Raven so early.
@Natan Irrelevant nonsense.
but, it was not so needed because the radars were always off... Only when they knew that there was an airspace breach (Anti-Air people who served told me that they could tell by the sound it the plane is coming at you or is making a turn or whatever.. The radars were allowed to be turned on for 18 seconds to aoid detection. The Anti-Air part of the army had insignificant losses and there was hardly a piece of movable equipment hit. In fact, they were all dummies and NATO found that out after boasting of hundreds of tanks and other vehicles hit. That hurt so they turned to civilian targets because they had to justify it all somehow. When the first peacekeepers entered Serbia, they reported 16 tanks destroyed.. Serbia to comply and leave the territory that was internationally recognized as Serbian sovereign territory.
I donlt know how do you justify the second one hit?

American sources state that a second F-117 was targeted and damaged during the campaign, allegedly on 30 April 1999. The aircraft returned to Spangdahlem base, but it supposedly never flew again. However, the USAF continued to use the F-117 during Allied Force.

JNA (former Yugoslavian National Army) was one of the most feared armies in the world and Europe in 70's and 80's. Army was made from nations across Yugoslavia (Serbs, Croats, Bosnisns, Montenegrans, Macedonians and Slovenians). After Yugoslavia breakdown, most of the army personnel was in Serbia as largest nation and territory from former Yugoslavia. While technics were obsolete in the time of bombardment, personnel was still from glorious JNA era, tactically well trained and very capable. We also captured couple of US Army scouts in Kosovo and let them go via rev Jessie Jackson mediation. Sounds like our stupid leaders tried to suck up to our enemy rather than fight. How do helicopters get passed the radar? Are they going low as hell? Wouldn’t the sound alert nearby Serbian search parties?
Well, Zoltán Dani told the situation a bit different. ruclips.net/video/KBC1H_Qr_Rw/видео.html
The F-117 (and any stealth plane) can be discovered, if you broadcast the seeking radar signal at an appropriate wavelength for that particular plane. If you know the dimensions of the plane, than you can "force" the hull of the plane with the radar signal to resonate, and thus revealing the plane itself.
It was invisible until it opened its bomb doors.
@@chrisf4268 Eh, no, that story is nothing more than mere conjecture and it is a shoddy attempt of compensating for the fact that the craft was detectable.
Not sure if you understand what you're saying but if this conjectural story is correct, how do you explain the other F-117 that Mr Dani managed to damage? Did that one also have its bays open? No, so neither did the first one.
The fact of the matter is that Mr Dani developed a theory on how to detect the craft and that is why he managed to damage two F-117s, whether you Americans can accept that or not is none of our concern.

@@fpsserbia6570 True, true, and true (as far as I know).
There was a joke at the time: "The Yugoslav air defense is like a G-string - it covers a tiny patch of territory and can't hope to defend it."
@@lexprontera8325 everyone knew that, and when i say 30% i meant not overlapping SAMs but streching them as much as you could, i mean they showed a map of SAMs position during the war and even they said it was ridiculous, because SAMs system should be overlapping so they can protect each other and also work together with planes and that is how you get advantage over enemies even with older equipment but they couldn't confirme 100% which plane is enemy and which is friendly and they couldn't protect other SAM battery
Lack of ammunition, trained military personnel, lack of equipment and bad maintained equipment was to much for the generals to deal with, many even newer migs 29 had problems with malfunctioning, you could imagine what shit show would be with old mig 21 and s 75 dvina, SAM from late 50s aginst most powerful alliance on the world
Everyone was aware that if land invasion start, holding a line won't be an option, because Serbia in that time probably even know have bad logistic i know that from soldiers who served on the border with Albania they often didn't have enought ammunition, bombs, mines, even FOOD and WATER, yea a lot fo rpoblems with logistic happened because of NATO bombing and KLA insurgency
They are trying to fix that now, but in order to succeed we would need a budget to be around 5+ billions
We have 25 000 soldiera now, in that time over 100 000 soldiers were only in Kosovo
I find it funny when today i hear someone say, our army should go in Kosovo, i always say " What army"
Somebody should have told Serbs that it is a stealth plane….
64 machines and 9500 deployments in 20 years, but 9499: 1 is also a good statistic
stupid August von Kreml bot
