It's a shame that the responsibility of game preservation falls on our hands, but I feel like it's always going to be that way. The big companies will make some baby steps towards preservation or give an illusion of preservation. The main issue is that the group of people who care about preservation is small when compared to gamers at large. So there is less demand for it. And that group is getting even smaller because we have younger generations of people who are conditioned to consume media and quickly move onto the next thing. Companies successfully shifted from the idea of "media ownership" to "media borrowing."
The modern era where digital games/music/movies/Tv show libraries are the norm and delisting becomes more of an unfortunate inevitability.

The simple fact is, it's not in the material interest of video game companies to preserve their games. Either we introduce government regulation to force their hand, or we do it ourselves.
To that end, I also consider piracy a perfectly acceptable way to preserve media.

Long term -> Emulation and Scene.
In the short term -> good practices of companies and developers (hardware and software).

One thing I do have to kinda disagree on. Film while in a much better place than games. Is still not in a great situation. There are probably THOUSANDS of movies that are only available to watch on hyper insulated private trackers like Pass the Popcorn. Some movies have literally been totally lost to time, and many more (especially mid era VHS releases) aren't being preserved in any meaningful way at all. Even with a task so much simpler than games, (more universal mediums, smaller storage size, less complex to recreate) so much of television and cinematic history is lost daily. Piracy is the only true solution for these things yes, but with how insular quality torrent communities have become, it increasingly becomes impossible for the general public to have any access to some things. I'm not ready to trust gaming to them like we had to entrust film, sure most popular works are accounted for, but the obscure and niche are lost and walled behind gated communities that don't allow entry.

This is main reason I jailbreak all my game systems. Plus with homebrew on consoles you can do many things like playing Super Mario Sunburn at 60fps widescreen hack thru nintendon't, run emulators, overclocking ps3, ps vita, switch CPU, downloading physical copies of games into the hard drives, and runs mods/rom hacks.

I´m not buying a Series X this gen because the DRM and games not being on the disc. For ps5 I check ´does it play´ before I buy a game. Game collecting gives me stress. I was playing a game on ps4 which is broken and it deletes the save file. It only works if you download a patch. The ESRB version has the patch on disc so stupid crazy autistic me bought another copy on Amazon US just to have a working physical copy 😅😔. I contacted the publisher but no answer and I copied them in the tweet from does it play but they don´t care. The game is fixed what do you want...you sold me a broken game!

Physical-only goblins who are against emulation, piracy, and repro carts are almost worse, because they want everyone on the planet to stop having fun so their Little Samson cart doesn't depreciate in value.

I'm completely hooked on this game and it's blowing all of my expectations out of the water, and a lot of that is due to how much emulation has the potential to make for a better gaming experience.

Out of the three, Sony is definitely in the "Don Matrick" camp that brings forth all the blackpilling for sure. What a turn of events, for Microsoft and Sony to swap places from a few years ago. Sony has also delisted a ton of old PSN games, some of them falling under certain umbrellas of PS3-styled gaming, like the PS2 classics before they revised them under a new name for the PS4 storefront.
I kinda miss the days of the PSP and 6th-7th gen, where they made collections of the old games, physically and offered them in big collections, even as baby steps, things like the SEGA Collection the SNK Collection for the PSP for example, it just filled you with hope, seeing those games getting ports and the companies now having the code and easily porting it to new hardware...ah well.

Why don't the console companies unlock the need for internet connection once they don't sell the console? The whole C-Bomb thing could be avoided then, right? They don't make money on the console anymore so why do they care if it is connected to the internet or not. Now knowing this it is pretty hard to justify investing into a console and it's games.

  • @Not-Great-at-Gaming
    @Not-Great-at-Gaming 2 года назад +2

Physical media is the best way to preserve your ownership. It's not 100% guaranteed or perfect (i.e many "need" a day one patch), but I am pretty confident most of my games will always be playable in some manner. Xbox One games can be played on Xbox One if they don't work on Series X (Keep a One X just in case). Obviously, keep a PS3, PS4, and a PS5. Don't assume the PS5 is all you need.
More concerning is other media. I try to maintain a library of those as well, but there are some, like The Drew Carey show, that seem to be lost with no way to watch them (apart from season 1 and a few miscellaneous episodes). Im losing faith in streaming services more and more every day. It used to be you could find anything on Netflix or Hulu, but now they focus on their own stuff. Want to watch Miami Vice or something like that, youre probably out of luck. How many people really collect DVDs and Blu Rays anymore, or Music CDs? I know vinyl is a thing, but there are a limited number of times you can play a record before it wears down, same with tape.

Still dreading the day I can't play any of my PS3 games... Definitely feels like big companies just don't care, I bought DLC for Dissidia 012 earlier this year only to find out I can't install it on my Vita. The option is just not there, I see it on my download list though. But I don't know what the reason is since I have the game installed...
At some point there's just going to be no incentive to buy anything digitally and they'll just have a rental service instead, which is definitely an L. How hard can it be to just let people have access to old things on the network? Not all of us are 12 year olds who only play Fortnite or COD. Just having accumulated a big collection over the years feels like a punishment and it shouldn't.
    Update:
I'm not sure where to post this but here. So I tried to contact Sony a couple of times about the issue above and the dualsense controller that came with my PS5 having stick drift. The first time was a few months after I got my console, so I tried the chat support option on the website on my phone...it just said it was loading infinitely so I figured y'know what I'll just get another one and wait till it's close to the end of my warranty.
Fast forward to now, my system was bought at the end of February so I figured why not try to send it in now? I try on the desktop site version and am able to fill out a request for returning/repairs. I put in my address and then it says that my product is from a different region and to select what country I live in. So I pick USA and it redirects me to the regular site...
So I'm starting to feel a bit annoyed and confused now. I go to the customer support chat and after waiting a few minutes it connects me to someone supposedly. So I typed out what was wrong with my controller and what happened, hoping maybe I'll get some kind of help with the PSP dlc problem as well... The chat "disconnects" while I'm waiting for a response.
My connection was totally fine. I'm about 99 percent sure that they just couldn't do anything and closed it, you know how I know? Because when I went to go and use the chat support again, it said. "Wowee, it looks like you just used this, how about you go fuck off for a while?" Don't buy anything from this company if you can help it. Just. Don't.

Torrent alongside adaptation of free and segmented private digital hosting services works wonders honestly, not to mention that the discussions of presevations of niche stuffs can be seen on certain sections of platforms akin to discords and other several forums, this is why "repacks" and digital emulators' sites are still very important regardless of the "legal" attempts by big multinational companies to raze them (while providing somehow worse yet costly alternatives that brings people back to the old medias), physical medias aren't sustainable since we're going full digital now, but at the upside digital platforms' pendulums can be directed into preservations favour regardless
Repacks by Fit girl and emulations akin to switch/Wiiu/3DS, etc are still the international treasures everyone cannot give up to neither faux copyright 'legalism' from the psychotic (or simply ignorant) executives nor the physical erosions sprung from the marching of time

I just recently got into Forza Horizon. I started with 5 and loved it, and I’m the type of person who loves to go back and play the roots of many franchises. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to do so in a complete way.
I bought everything for FH4, but 3, 2, and 1 are delisted. I managed to pirate 3 on PC with all its DLC and updates. However, 1 and 2 were only on 360/Xbox One. So I can only buy a physical copy secondhand, if I’m lucky get updates, but no DLC.
Fuck bullshit licensing, fuck these companies. I literally want to throw them money and buy these games but I can’t. I can either pirate it, or never be able to play it ever.
It’s a big reason why I quit playing Destiny 2. They constantly remove content because the game is “too big” and their programmers are incompetent. Those campaigns, raids, planets, etc are all gone.
