Did you ever have any Yohan malls in the US? Yohan were a supermarket chain in Japan, who had the idea of opening Japanese malls in other countries that had large Asian communities, we had one in London, was great to walk around but totally dead most of the time. Ended up being used as a zombie survival theme park, before being used as a set for the 2012 Judge Dredd movie, before being torn down and replaced with an Asian food hall. So many memories. My family used to eat at the Sam Woo every time we’d visit Vegas. It felt like the weirdest plaza when it first opened as an Asian getaway from the rest of the strip
The up stair mall that was close has big space that sell gifts , clothes , paintings etc. In the summer is really hot since they don't turn AC on. Also if you get a chance next time when you come to Vegas. Just drive up another mile or so west of China town. You can find so many great Asian restaurants / shops along the street of Spring Mt. all the way up to Jones.
I lived in Vegas from 92-04. Used to go eat there a lot. Especially Sam Woo BBQ. Interesting info... all China Towns have an underworld element, and this one is no different. Around 1999, there was a bust at an apartment complex right behind the plaza. They were running an illegal Asian brothel in 2 units next to each other.
I've passed this plaza multiple times while heading either to Sam's Town when my aunt and uncle are in town(My mother hates taking the freeway, she'd rather take the streets... And take longer), or to the Golden Corral in the north-east corner of the valley(Not so much since one opened near Sunset Station Casino), and I've always wanted to pop in. I'd never been so close to a Chinatown before, even visiting my aunt in LA, but here I am, living in Las Vegas... And I've never been able to stop and visit Chinatown.
I used to get my boba tea at that No. 1 store and ate at that Chinese restaurant in the middle of that mall (right across from the boba tea shop) when I lived in Vegas. Vegas survived 9/11, the 2008 market crash and it’ll survive the 2020 Coronavirus because the people in Vegas are resilient!

Most boba places I go to have milk tea as well. Keep an eye out next time you see a boba place. I'm bummed you made it to the Carlsbad mall of all places, and didn't get to see shopping center in Little Saigon in orange county, or the Japanese food in southern San Diego or northern Orange County, or even LA (like little Tokyo, or the less touristy Sawtelle Avenue Japanese food). Living in Oceanside I've probably managed to try Takoyaki (and you did say it right) at about 40 places at this point. I've had Ramen from a place that has four locations, three in Japan, and one in LA. Real neat stuff. And the shopping centers many of them are in are SO COOL! Absolutely places I know you would enjoy. EDIT: And you got Okinamiyaki right too.
Ironically, I was there shortly after it opened in 1996 and at least half the owners and workers were Korean. Vegas doesn't have much of a Chinese population but there's a fairly significant Korean population. That Korean barbeque place was excellent. This lockdown is going to decimate that mall. I assume the whole place is closed down, and most of the shops and restaurants were barely profitable to begin with. We are cratering the entire economy, and some of the damage will be permanent if this goes on much longer. Vegas with no incoming flights, no hotels open, no casinos open, and almost all the rest of the tourist infrastructure closed down, will be turning in the same dusty railroad spot it was in 1905.

On our very last day in Vegas, around November 2019, my parents and I were looking for a good Chinese restaurant to eat.... I was driving around and decided to go enter this strip mall plaza because I liked the Chinese decor... We were killing some time until we went to the airport.. My dad bought a lot from that bakery place around the corner and it was pretty good.. The store inside the mall were selling some random things and I remember thinking that‘s kinda typical of Chinese stores.. I appreciate the video because even though the statue was right in the middle, I didn’t really notice it.. Also, the mural inside the mall I didn’t really look at when we were there.. I guess I was too busy finding a place to eat.. Anyways, some of the places there had some bad reviews online, so we ended up going to another restaurant a couple blocks away..

This place looks great! Thank you for making a video on it! I wish more places where I live had Japanese cuisine like yakisoba. We have maybe 2 Ramen places and a couple of sushi joints at most but they are always in places that are absolutely packed and rarely have good parking.
Used to ditch school and hang out in the upstairs portion of the plaza after grabbing a curry steam bun from the bakery constantly. That 99 ranch you were in is still getting business during the crisis. The upstairs part of the plaza has always been pretty dead as far back as i can remember. The store which read "arts & crafts" carries a ton of stationary, bootleg toys, chinese DVD's CD's and books. Probably my favorite part of the mall. The newer parts of Chinatown are pretty packed even at night. Next time you're here I highly recommend visiting a restaurant called Chengdu taste which is hidden behind the plaza right across Wynn street. Great video man!

Great video! That Takoyaki looks delicious! I'm glad the idea of eating octopus wasn't too intimidating for you, lol! Next time you go to one of those bakeries definitely try some of the breads, they're kinda like donuts or pan dulce with more Asian flavors, I recommend red bean buns with those UCC canned coffees. Most of the Asian Marts near me have been able to keep stock on shelves and the lights on, so hopefully they're doing okay at the moment. Hope you and your family is staying safe!
Oh no! You should have gotten the okonomiyaki (Hiroshima style). You missed a treat! Okonomiyaki (Hiroshima style) is hard to find, Takoyaki is everywhere.

Damn that really sucks we were gonna go to Vegas for my brothers 21st Birthday this month but due to this global pandemic curse we had to reschedule it
Ahh yes 99 Ranch...the ones in Vegas aren't as good though, different owner than the Cali branch I think. Still not too bad from a state that's largely devoid of Asian markets.
Ahhh, I love this. This reminds me of Chinatown malls in Montreal and Toronto. At least back when we used to go in. Some are gone now. We went to Montreal for a mini vacation in December, and I'm glad we did, who knows when we may ever get back there and what will be left when we do. A mall like this was dying in about 2016? Between then and 2019 anyway. It is just so sad to see the past die. Everything familiar is vanishing.
Thanks so much for the video. I was just thinking about this place recently, I used to go here all the time with my mom in the '90s. Hasn't changed a bit.

The shop name at 2:46 is China Town Toys
Thank you!
This mall is definitely not dead.
Nice another Retail Archaeology video. Great telling voice and positive vibes as always, nice location. Thanks for the vids man, in these sucky times...
I really appreciate the album title! Thank you!
There are a few Asian grocery stores here in Alberta, Canada. My first visit was an amazing experience -- it is so interesting to see the unique products.
My husband and I love the 99 ranch in our area. All those specialty Asian ingredients you can find there.
4:03 that _Journey to the West_ statue. Guess they've finally _made it_ ? Lol jk.
China Town Toy!
Han Solo-Boba Tea? Boba Tea, Where!
Thanks so much for the video. I was just thinking about this place recently, I used to go here all the time with my mom in the '90s. Hasn't changed a bit.
I've only had Takoyaki once but now I realllly want some ugh >:(
amo este canal! te veo desde argentina, saludos!
Great video! Thanks.
If you ever get a chance and once this health crisis blows over, I recommend visiting the Asia Garden Mall in Westminster, California. I've gone there many times when I visit Cali. Definitely go during the summer time on Fridays because there's always a night market/outdoor bazaar and festival occurring in the parking lot! Wonderful content as always! Stay healthy!
The sign said China Town Toy Store
Wow I would love to go their one day great video thanks for sharing
miami virtual is such a good album...i remember being introduced to it in 2015 by dan bell and it still hits
Every Las Vegas trade show this plaza and the rest of restaurants along this street are great places to eat.
Malls have had to shut down due to the coronavirus. In Virginia we have the Eden Center and I hear it has quieted down in the last month. This mall was doing fine
This place looks really cool and I hope it stays open. Hopefully once all this is over I can go to Vegas and check it out. My boyfriend and I were talking about how we miss going to Mekong Plaza to get boba tea and walk around the shops.
Sin City? Why that name?
Sin City is a common nickname for Las Vegas.
I figured with nothing open at all you’d be documenting it! Good opportunity!
No I am not going out and filming. We have a stay at home order. As mentioned in the video this footage was recorded in December 2019.
Retail Archaeology stay safe see you on the flip side
I love the concept of a mall's stores being around a central restaurant!
Ah, I do remember coming here in 2005! Great boba and Sailor Moon trinkets hahaha
SIN CITY!!!!!!!!!!
Yes
I love malls like this
Takoyaki are octopus fritters.
There’s something I like on my takoyaki call Bonito flakes. It’s pretty much a piece of fish and if you look closely they can move around
Did you try the Rotisserie Bat? I heard it's to die for. Awesome place though, Eric. I hope you and the family are doing well!
Pretty cool place!
Mmmmm boba! 😆
Did they have any sushi restaurants there?
You're making 2019 look so good. Anyone got a time machine? I really need a vacation back to 2019. 2020 sucks.
The Gift shop in the plaza sells imported NES and SNES games i dont know if they are real or knock offs from Alibaba but they do work and some are beat up so maybe theyre real lol
Damn, now I really wish it was open when we were there. Hopefully it's still there when this whole mess blows over.
Dozo Izakaya in Tempe, AZ has really good takoyaki.
Im wondering do they have Wheel Of Fortune in China?
