    What challenge do you think Steve should take on next? 👀

    I qualified for Kona in my first ironman ever this year at Ironman Copenhagen. I won the 70-74 age group in 12:54:43 a time I was very pleased with, a decent time for a 70 year old doing the distance for for the first time. Turned down the Kona slot because it doesn't fit in with my plans for year 71. Age is just a number guys and the journey is the thing.

    Great effort! I'm 52, started Tri 4 years ago as a complete swim/run novice. Covid got in the way of my progression but completed IM UK last year, Roth this year and just completed IM Wales with a goal of completing well and healthy. Blow away to finish 10th in AG and grab the last spot to Kona 2024! I think I may have even qualified for Long distance AG GBR too! With a passionate PT coach who has supported my journey, training on a shoe string budget (very 2nd hand bike/learning) learning nutrition on the way! I'm not sure if I'm excited for all the logistics or just plain daunted!!! Not sure how I will afford it but couldn't resist the oppotunity of a place at The World Champs at such an iconic venue. Very open to hear/see how you guys could recommend how AG can do Kona on a budget and those top tips/priorities! Amazing content as ever. Matt- Worcester

    Steve ... if you're still following these comments ... well done to you! You picked a challenge and did your best to get there. Qualifying for Kona was a long shot from the get go and rather unrealistic goal given where you were starting from. But completing a full distance IM race in a respectable time and having good time getting through the race is a big win in my eyes. You should be happy and proud of your achievement. I've certainly enjoyed following your journey.
    (To the GTN team ... I'd definitely suggest less product promotion. This series would have been well worth making even if there were no products presented at all. Compared to many of your other videos, the product promotion seemed to overshadow Steve's personal story and experience more often than not. Thanks for making the serries non the less.)

    I think it's a bit much to try and qualify for Kona in a year. I guess it depends on your starting point. 5 years is more realistic.

    Going from zero to a full iron distance in one year was ambitious, however a brilliant effort well done Steve. I think a more modest approach of smaller races followed by a 70.3 half distance, would put you in a great position next year and beyond.

    Well done Steve. Look for the stars and you will reach the top of the trees, I use to say.
    My first IM vas in Kalmar 2015 . This year I will go to Kona. It will be my Ironman nr 10.
    Ironman Sweden had many slots for the women cause there are so many women who compete in triathlon in Sweden.
    For the men it’s tough . Many men are very fast. In ag 40 they used to be as fast as the pro .
    Good luck and enjoy your training life .

    According to the screenshots from Humango, training went well until the 70.3 race but tapered off drastically after that. Consistency is key and it looks like, as much support as GTN and all sponsors provided, the consistency wasn’t there. As an aging athlete myself, I wish the best for Steve, but the data doesn’t lie and that data says that Steve wasn’t fit enough for the race.

    Surely the GTN Team knew from the outset this wasn’t possible, not in the conventional sense of earning a non roll-down place. The split men’s and women’s days bring double the slots now and even with this, it was never on the cards. 13 hrs with a half distance swim is nowhere near the qualifying mark. I know, because that’s me 😁

  • @Breakawaybiking
    @Breakawaybiking 10 месяцев назад +3

    Happy for Steve however this video is virtually not achievable by the general age group athlete. GTN puts out videos that are so far out there that almost makes it not fun to watch. “Oh, Steve has a coach for using the bathroom, lets check his progress….”

    • @stevemckay4466
      @stevemckay4466 10 месяцев назад +1

  • @IYCB
    @IYCB 10 месяцев назад +1

    he won't qualify unless he finds a slow race in his agegroup or you pay for a slot

    • @Kwildcat13
      @Kwildcat13 10 месяцев назад +1

      Doesn’t matter anyways the championship for men moved to niece France .. it’s no longer in Hawaii sadly for the men. All you really need is everyone else in your age group ahead of you to turn down the championship .. and be prepared to pay your entry right away ..

    • @trepidati0n533
      @trepidati0n533 10 месяцев назад +2

      I disagree. The big part of the "first year" is getting your brain really wrapped around what it takes. The second year is figuring out whether or not you actually are willing to commit that time when the novelty wears off...it is years 3+ when you either shit or get off the pot. 13 hours for a first IM at his age, even with the shortened swim and that course puts him right in the cross hairs of a Kona slot in a few years.

    • @stevemckay4466
      @stevemckay4466 10 месяцев назад

      @@Kwildcat13 Exactly! There are other ways of entry but you still need to turn up and try.
