Pete's Shredder. True, but you had to soak the parts in resin or cyanoacrylate in postprocessing and the parts were very brittle, you would not do anything structural with them. Now this is made of nylon and the price has gone down by a factor of 10 so it's accessible to small businesses, startups and maker spaces.

50 years from now, assuming our robot overlords allow it, single moms will be 3D printing children. You'll design your dream child in Lil-DudeCAD or WhipperSnapper 4D, upload the file to the Spray-a-Baby website and pick up your brand new kid in about 72 hours tops or have him delivered directly to your doorstep straight from the *fulfillment* center. Wanna skip the messy stuff? You can even have him biosculpted to toddler size with the home training mod, so you'll never have to deal with dirty diapers or temper-tantrums. No need for packaging. He'll repel down from the Amazon Stork Heavy drone onto your driveway, walk right up to your front door, and ring the bell. You'll have to show I.D. and sign for him, but hey, when you hear your brand new bouncing little toddler say, "can i have some ice cream!" you'll realize that $1,000,000 (inflation adjusted) and extensive background check was money and time well spent!

A correction - the Fuse 1 is not the first benchtop SLS printer priced well under the typical $150K+ price tag. The Swiss-made Sintratec Kit came out toward beginning of 2016 for $5600. It's a kit that takes approx 4 days to build with a volume of 110mm x 110mm x 110mm. They also offer the S1 which is fully assembled for $10,135 with a volume of 130mm x 130mm x 180mm.
    The Fuse 1 has a volume of 165mm x 165mm x 320mm for $9,999.

You're forgetting about the LISA from Sinterit. Less than 5000 Euro including the support equipment (that self-same support equipment is an additional $10,000 for the FUSE 1). I will admit though that the FUSE 1 seems much easier to use (with cartridge filling, and a removable build area). The LISA is a bit of a faff.

Not sure what you were actually looking at 6 years ago but SLS parts are generally pretty good for strength and stiffness compared to other 3d printing processes. Maybe the 'brittle' parts you looked at were actually just really thin and easy to break?

    • @Cinnabuns2009

If you compared it to metallurgy it seems like the difference would be... the difference between extruding (very strong continuous grain) similar to how a regular 3D printer prints extruding material, with sintering/casting/deposition which is fusing individual particles together which in general is more rigid, can be stronger if done correctly, but inevitably more brittle because the bond between individual particles can't compete with an extruded "string" of material. Probably why they're using nylon which has a higher modulus of elasticity. Its like anything else though; its the application. For somethings its game changing, for others its sub par. We're not there yet.

This is so amazing. I love seeing how much the prices are dropping on machines like this, while the user experience and quality are improving in leaps and bounds. I'm curious what the cost of the powder is, and what kind of paint finishing options there are. I do find it a bit odd that the reclaiming and mixing stations are roughly equivalent in cost to this amazing and complex machine, seems like the price on those could be cut down by at lest 50%, if not far more.

I have many designs made by sls, as a matter of fact I'm waiting for an existing order for about 20 different parts right now so this machine and it's recovery station is very interesting to me. The only thing I don't like is the dark colour of the finished product which would make it difficult to dye a colour lighter than the base nylon colour. If nylon came in a variety of colours or at least come out white like most sls prints do then there would be no problem but with this system it's very limited. It's good they mentioned the reason why the colour is dark at least.

10K for the machine is an amazing price, but I think 9k for the cleaning and mix station is a bit steep.
How often can you "reuse" the powder and how much does it cost to fill the build volume once?

    • @etch3130
      @etch3130 5 лет назад

Based on similar systems the max you get is a 50% recycle rate on powder. And if you want good prints its recommended to use pure new powder.

  • @jbalatutube
    @jbalatutube 5 лет назад +1

We have been using the sinterit Lisa which is very similar and also uses the more expensive darker absorbing nylon and honestly the first few parts were great and now quality is starting to degrade as we haven’t been too diligent adding refresh material and making sure powder is packed properly. It is a real hassle and quite time consuming preparing the machine and then removing and cleaning the parts as compared with normal FFF printing. Also the laser scans really slowly compared to industrial sls machines, most of my prints are more than 24 hours, just as slow as FFF or slower. I’m really looking forward to HP multi jet where most of the workflow is automated. Not saying that cheap sls is not worth it but it’s not all rosy either, also with all the refresh material yet you need to use it starts getting really expensive so would never consider this for home use.

He never said "normal people" would own one, he said normal people could have access to one. Right now SLS printing is simply not widely available because machines are hundreds of thousands of dollars. At this price your local maker space could have one, or a local printing shop could have one. At this price point you could afford to pay someone to do some amazing prints. In another 5 years, you will be able to afford one at home.

    Questions:
-What happens to the unused powder you dont recycle, as you will not be using 50% of the powder in the build printing parts, how is this dispensed from the cleaning station?
-can you switch the machine between PA12 & PA11 powders and if so how much work is involved to clean/decontaminate the machine from the old powder?
-how long does a full build take?

I immediately realized when the machine appeared for the first time in the video that it's not cheap as in 1500$, but at least a few thousand more. Nevertheless, I must say that this is some astonishing engineering for the 10000$ price tag! It's definitely in the reach of small businesses. I wonder how pricey the nylon material is and thus how high the operating costs are.

  • @bobthecannibal1

Hmm, $10k for it. I'm going to raise an interesting couple of points: The only place I'm seeing offering nylon-12 powder for SLS has it at $150/kg. Contrast that with FFF filaments where you can get 1.75mm nylon-12 filament for $86/kg. It takes an hour for this to start up, and it prints at 10mm per *hour*, So it's more in line with production floors than it is for hobbyists because you *need* to load the build volume in order to decrease the slack time involved in wiping powder into the "dead" space. Then there's the fact that a home gamer can make their own filament by buying bulk raw plastic and extruding it with a home-built filastruder clone: I doubt the home gamer can achieve powders at the requisite granularity and consistency. Then this box only does two types of nylon; a FFF printer can do nylon, ABS, PET(T/G), PLA, HIPS, and TPE, among others. It's not worth standing on that hill and hanging your hat on it.

would love to have 3D printer. especially back in the 90's when I was in to battletech than all I would need to do is get one put it in a 3D scanner and start printing all I need for me and my friends.

Fuse one is not first consumer accessible SLS 3d printer! For more than a year Sinterit.com sell its SLS printer. Now the price is less than 5k euro.

It costs 10K but it is the First consumer SLS Printer he said -.-'' If I had 10K right now I would consider myself millionaire.

      Nesquick PT
Well, no. You need to have $1 million to consider yourself a millionaire. Having $10k would let you consider yourself to be a "ten-thousandaire". You see how this works now?

Man, I want this. But 20G + materials is pretty rich. Nothing like the six-figure commercial ones, though.

I'm a normal person and I might buy this next year. I'll have to eat McDonald for while though lol. Everyone says 10K is expensive, you can spend just a much on any hobby like RC or Photography. Also you do not need but the cleaning station and mixing system, you can make your own for much cheaper.

True and crazy 3d printer hobby people have like 3-4 printers that add up to 10k+ anyway... lol.

This guy's sense of home use market is vastly skewed. $3000 would be more in the ballpark, and that's still a lot to lay down for most people.

it's roughly a factor of 10 cheaper than other SLS machines currently available, I say that's a first step into the right direction ;-)

Although you won't be seeing these pop up in many peoples' garages, they could conceivably be set up in maker spaces.

$3000 for the printer and another $2k-$3k for BOTH the cleaning station and mixing stations and it'd be very reachable. For the $20,000 I need to win the lottery.

If they can get it down to 4-5k, I'd consider it at some point, but daaaamn. Hopefully someone comes out with something with similar abilities, maybe slightly less fancy.

  • @blaine3193

Does the powder fall under the microbead ban? The relevant text; "Microbeads are manufactured solid plastic particles of less than one millimeter in their largest dimension, and commercially available in particle sizes from 10 micrometres (0.00039 in) to 1 millimetre (0.039 in)."

I wonder if there's a way to "post process" those prints and make them smoother. Perhaps another laser pass, using something like those laser rust removers?

  • @argophontes

This is really exciting, but I would have liked seeing at least a couple of stress tests on the parts, "it's tough" and thumping it aren't really good rubrics by which to judge something like this.

there is no why to use it as a mass production process right? how fast does these machines print? I'd imagine that glove takes 15-20 hours?
