  • 📜 History of the End of the Samurai: The Last Samurai - The chapter of history for the samurai is coming to a close. The Three Great Nobles of the restoration have fractured. Saigo Takamori returns to his land and vows not to get involved in politics but that in itself was a very strong political statement. And not a promise he could keep as dissident samurai and other factions flock to his military academy. One final battle will put an end to the last of the samurai. Or will it?

    • @95bekirable

America never had the intention of making Japan modern, they just wanted Japan to open its border for trade, without limitation, which was a negative thing for the economy of a non-industrial country like Japan.
America probably never predicted that Japan could develop itself, the Russian defeat at the Russo-Japanese war was a shock for western nations, because up untill that point Westerners believed that no non-european nation could develop enough to contest with western powers.

The Samurai were an unjust class from a dead time. I would fire on them with the same fervor as I would Noble knights or Jannisaries. Still, my heart leapt as I read of their final charge.

I know this is story is about the last stand of the last samurai, but i respect WAY MORE the defending forces of Kumamoto Castle, a group a civilian soldiers figthing a enemy twice their size, made of hardned samurai, a social cast of born soldiers, the top of hierarchy for centuries.
And yet, the civilians stood they ground, they were the botton of the hierarchy now that the merchants were rising in the social ranks, they problably never expect to have to defend they position from such a enemy, i would not be surprise if they spend they younger years hearing stories about how samurais were the most honored soldiers of they contry, hell i would not be surprise if the general feeling before the battle was that they (the civilians) were not allowed to win.
And yet, they stood they ground and hold the line, the mind boogle on how many samurai charged that castle thinking it would be a easy victory against a inferior force, only to get a bullet in the face or a bayonet in the stomach.
It surprises me that Japan would carry the samurai pride on its army after this event, because from my point of view, having a civilian army defenty the legendary casthe of samurai kinda teatches the opposite: you dont need to be born as a warrior obsessed with honor, all you need is the streang to defend your home and the will to figth back.
As someone whos not a big fan of social castes, especially the ones that put soldiers and war mongrels in the top, my respect goes for the civilian defenders of Castle Kumamoto, you dont need to be a samurai to figth for what you belive.

I get your point, but it’s way easier to defend a castle than it is to attack one. Many castles could defend against 5-to-1 odds pretty easily. The samurai would also have likely overtaken the castle had the Japanese army reinforcements not arrived, despite the samurai having outdated battle tactics

Its kinda sad that the samurai died out because they refused to live under the same laws as everyone else.
