I got a grifter for x-mas (thanks grandad) when they came out, was the greatest thing ever, felt like having a 4 wheel drive with turbo, was great fun, but, it was damn heavy, the toggle chain eventualy got bashed and you had to pull it into gear and push a nail through it, to hold it in gear lol, and the seat also fell apart, evryone had a big split in the rubber seat and the metal plate came through, good times though

Had a Raleigh Chipper as a kid in the 70s.So rare to find these days. Also had a Raleigh Tuff Burner in the 80s(the Gold one with the Black Skyway wheels). For some reason Raleigh UK never did a 24 inch bmx Cruiser, only 20 inch bmx bikes.Raleigh USA did a 24 inch bmx (the R7000)as part of their bmx range.Raleigh did rerelease the Team,Tuff and Aero Burners not long ago in limited numbers, but they usually ended up on eBay selling for ridiculous prices!😾

I just wish mobile phones had been a thing when I had my Chopper (as nobody believes me nowadays),got it for my 9th birthday, after every ride it was cleaned thoroughly..definitely one of a kind simply because I'm pretty sure nobody else had a 'sidecar' attached to it,made out of a real coffin (don't ask!),as if the bike itself wasn't already heavy enough, add a 7ft lump of wood weighing about 150lb or so you certainly sometimes had trouble braking in a hurry, especially down a steep hill, and don't get me started on steering it,quickly rectified that though by a friend of my fathers who was a motor mechanic and he attached some device to underside of coffin base which made it much easier AND safer ! Paired with a air horn (powered by gas canister) attached to handlebars with jubilee clip and a 'boom-box' attached to metal rack behind seat it was certainly a headturner no doubt..used to make fortune charging all my mates 10p trip 'round the block' fitting 2 in sidecar..which usually involved them jumping out on uphill stretch cause there was no chance with hills where I lived then. Sadly all my friends were getting road racing bikes and I followed but within days I wish I'd not traded in my beloved Chopper

Very surprised no mention of the Tomahawk, the true mini Chopper. I got one when they were first released, one of the originals with metal pull rod brakes. I have one in my garage now unrestored identical to my old one. I went from that to a metallic green MK1 Chopper which i thought was way cooler than the MK2. One of my friends had a Chopper Sprint and a couple years later another friend had one of the MK2 5 speed Choppers. Had a nasty accident on my MK1, the rounde gear knob was missing and for some reason i rode around an adventure playground with my eyes closed ( something i had a habit of doing ) and the inevitable happened when i rode into a log. Cue blood stain patch in the front of my trousers as i lay on the floor in agony.

The Grifter was a horrible hefty heavy slow riding bike bar a nice thick sponge seat till they split but so did the seats on the Chopper etc. I wonder what bike sales numbers are like from say 1970-80 compared to say 2010-2020 UK as roads are a lot more congested and dangerous for kids compared to the 70/80's era.
