Another great video. Love the history of these old towns. As Another viewer stated, the interstate is the death of these small towns. High speed highways have no charm or character like the places that are passed too quickly by. I'm so glad you search for the remains of these forgotten gems. Always enjoy seeing your videos dear. stay safe and GOD bless
So true. The real charm and character of any region here in the USA is not on the "Super Slab", but off on those old two lanes. I bet that chat with the lady in the store was equal to the time saved blasting down the interstate. As a traveler "just passing through" on a motorcycle, I have had the best talks with the locals and found even more great treasures to enjoy. Then there is also the history of times past that also awaits there to be seen. Once again, another wonderful video to watch!
I have been there many times over the past 50 years headed to Moab. You can see the many faded dreams there and many other places in the West. It is hard for us to understand why many gave their life's to such desolate places.
Ghost towns are a product of new high ways. It's sad! Your ghost town videos brought it to my attention. The hole you showed in Cisco reminded me of this fact. An abandon 12 inch irrigation well is big enough for the average man to slide into , arms above his head. He would slide on down. A child would slide down faster.
That was what I was thinking also. Years ago I read somewhere that many hikers in the wilderness who have disappeared and could not be found may have fallen down Wells and could not get out. That is why I always stay on trails when hiking.
I have been through that area. My Brother lives in Moab so we've been to there and stayed in Green River. That place reminds me of some of the places along Route 66.
Never heard a Johnny Cash song about Cisco, I might have thought it was about my hometown, Cisco, Texas. Just a small town in West Texas but not a ghost town. Cisco, Utah looks like a good place to blow stuff up.
that rough road wasn't so rough 20 years ago, when the state maintained it as the route to the Colorado River canyon. it is now completely bypassed, with even the road signs taken down
Wow - You must have been to Cisco about the same time (perhaps even the same day) that I was there. Loved that little ghost town...and also really enjoyed talking to Jean who owns Buzzards Belly with her husband Alan. You did a great job with your video. And, that Johnny Cash record...oh my!@!!! The lylrics were really perfect. Way to go Wiseguy. Look forward to seeing some more of your stuff.
Charlie Steen, the Uranium King had a tar paper shack there in '52, when he was headed to Grand Junction with a load of drilling cores he stopped at the gas station for some gas on credit, there was a geiger counter there and it went crazy, Charlie had hit a 'mother lode'... For the rest of the story Google "My Old Man:" THE URANIUM KING... Great stuff.
What an awesome video. History of past and Cisco amazing latest. How many ghost towns have that? Johnny Cash was one of a kind. Beautifully song written from history of town, it's people dying from term of progress. Interesting video so enjoyed. Utah is certainly worth visiting in this area. Thanks ,John.
I thought I would tell you ever since I watched your Leadville video I got bunch of PBS Rocky Mountain shows popping up in my feed and one of them was entirely about the history of Leadville. Really interesting. There was another one about all of the ghost towns in the state. I think you'd like it
Nice video. We are prepping for fall. Lows in the 40's and highs in the 70's, clean the yard up, all that stuff. Just really nice video, not kidding. Be good, be safe !
That's a neat song, I've never heard it before. So true of so many little towns lost because of the interstates. There is so much to be enjoyed off the inerstate and on the state routes or dirt back roads. I've often wondered if you have ever come upon a rattler or two as you wonder through these old ghost towns. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
Very interesting video, so sad to listen to Johnny Cash's song and think of how many small places ended up being abandoned. I think the US in the '50s would have been a nice place to live.
Drove through there a few times in the early 70s before I-70 when US 6-50 went through there. Wasn't a lot left then, Gas Station / Store and a few mobile homes. The houses and other buildings were pretty much already deserted. I need to look at the original Vanishing Point again .
Now this is what I call a ghost town. All that is there are ghosts, memories, nobody there but the foot print of the town. One day you will go back to Monowi, Nebraska. The one resident there will have long died. You will go to that bar that was once full of life and activity and now will look like that Cisco Filling Station along with every other building in the now ghost town of Monowi, and you will have the unique experience of being able to remember what that place looked like in life and now what it looks like in decay.
I've been to Cisco a few times, last time 2016 and passed on the Interstate more. I loved Big John's song. By the way, Kolwaski still lives. There is another ghost town just to the west of Cisco, Thompson Springs. If ever there check out the diner, looks as though it closed last week. Ate there once in 1974. Love that country.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy still a ittle bit to that town, I've got pics of an ancient fire engine parked under a filling station awning, gone now. the old railroad station. a few residents left now, but the only activity is a couple of gas stations along the freeway, and an odd visitor to the even more ancient ghost town in the canyon to the north, Puebloan graffiti everywhere
At 2:09, there is a sign on the building in Hebrew reading Chag Sameach, which translated means happy holiday. A very unusual find in this part of the country.
You know, I often wonder about these places where there aren't any people yet somehow some kind of souvenir store survives, Luckenburg I understand because while it's a ghost town people flock there by the hundreds for concerts. It makes sense but I see absolutely nobody in Cisco. I wonder who is buying the souvenirs to keep the store in business? Maybe since you mentioned the art maybe there is some art festival once a month. I don't know. Just weird to me.
We (here in Grand Junction) were made aware of when the scene would be shot, and were allowed to go out and watch... I was working that day, so missed it. : ^ (
Today many people are in such a hurry to the point forgetting how enjoying the simple pleasures in life are very important. For those in a hurry, their ideal of a ghost town is just another tacky tourist trap claiming to be a ghost town. Cisco's owner want her Ghost Town to be an art colony. How many artists are willing tp go to a place like Cisco only if they are aware of it. Some of the ghost towns which seem to be tacky tourist traps are being preserve by the local residents. As a lot of people are starting to notice the conflict between living the traditional America Dream ( some call the American Nightmare) and the New versions of the American Dream. This quote is a version of another similar one "If a society tends to forget history, it is condemn to repeat it!"
@@TravelwithaWiseguy maybe it's someone else? Eileen is the one I'm talking about. She bought cisco and wanted to turn it into an artist retreat. There's a video called population one and a movie called the cisco kid but I haven't seen the movie so I don't know much about it
She told me that she and her husband live in an RV on the property by Buzzard's Belly General store. There is electricity, but no water in Cisco...so any water is either trucked in or in the RV.
There's a lot of Cisco still there. Even Johnny Cash wrote a song. That is quite an honor for Cisco.
🎸Thanks for sharing this song from Johnny Cash and these profound reflections on this Utah ghost town. 🍁

We stopped there many times on the way to Hanksville, Hite and to see relatives in Pocatello in the 50's and 60's.
Such a cool video. I’ve lived in Utah since 1980 & never been through there.

Cash did a great job explaining the life and demise of that fillin' station in a song.
I agree. That song speaks to so many different towns across the country that had the same fate.
I have drove by the cisco sign a hundred times and always wondered what cisco was, now I know, Thanks for sharing
