Back in 1954 they didn't have rocks thrown at the cab and weren't being shot at. Today, an open cab window is an inviting target, also, the cabs are air conditioned and have tinted windows so it's hard to see if the engineer is waving or not.
I had the keys to gain access then. For average citizens it would have been a hike in shot. Also, the clearing from the dump fire was still relatively open it's now grown shut.

Great shot at 11:42 around the Titus generating station. You won't be able to get a shot like that these days.
