    Six years of underachievement cannot be pinned on Sam Darnold anymore. Now we see what Darnold looks like with competent coaching and a good offense around him, and guess what? Lookee what we got here, one of the best QBs in the league.

      KOC had been following Darnold since his high school days, as he was living in the LA area at the time. And followed him when he was at USC. He knew what Sam was all about. And, when Cousins left and they needed a veteran QB, he saw that Darnold was available. KOC got him to sign immediately. It helped that Sam spent a year resetting himself on the 49ers bench. And KOC basically uses his own version of Shanahan's playbook. Perfect match! Especially when Darnold has a decent O-line and gets to throw to Jefferson, Addison and Hockenson every week. And, his old teammate Josh McCown had just been hired as QB coach. Sam landed in the ideal spot.
      Put a QB in the right compatible situation, and he will flourish. The Jets and Panthers were not good situations - they destroy young QBs. Look at Bryce Young.

      Their defense is insane. Making career starting QBs question their career choices. Brock Purdy even went up to Flores after the 49ers game and told him his scheme is crazy.
      Most interesting thing is, they started the season without a standout star on defense. Danielle Hunter left in free agency. They have great players, but no real household names. Except maybe Harrison Smith. And Stephon Gilmore, who they picked up at the end of preseason. They basically let Brian Flores build around his types of players. It worked.

    • @superbassomatic
      @superbassomatic Месяц назад

      @@robe2504I was sold right after the Vikings signed him, and I decided to watch some of his sizzle reels on RUclips. The guy can throw well. And, unlike Cousins, he can shake off tacklers and even scramble for a few yards if he has too. Cousins was basically a statue in the pocket. I figured Darnold would be more effective than Cousins, because he's more versatile. And KOC runs a very QB-friendly system. I wasn't too worried.

    • @robe2504
      @robe2504 Месяц назад

      @@superbassomatic 100% dude. I thought wtf when he was first signed - I could only remember the Jets, and his 98 yard drive vs the Vikes.
      So I went back and watched all his games at the Panthers, and his cameos at the 49ers, and saw the same thing. Some great throws, a dangerous runner, and a guy that could take a bump in the pocket.
      Then I asked logically, why would Shanahan sign him, then let Trey Lance go, and why would KOC sign him the moment Kirk walked out the door? I also remembered Shanahan saying that Darnold and Purdy were competing for QB1 in training camp. Most people just ignored that.
      The one thing that puzzled me was his low completion rate at 60% - but then I found this measure on Pro Football Reference called throws on target which took out spikes, throwaways drops etc and then separated bad throws from on target. Sam's on target throws percentage was pretty similar to Kirk's.
      From then on I've been expecting Sam to operate the offence as efficiently as Kirk, maybe better with KOCs game plan, the Vikes O Line and elite WRs.
      I've been betting $100 a week variously on the Vikes to win the division 10-1, NFC 40-1, and SB 75-1 ever since.
      They are now +190 (2-1) for the division, 15-1 for the NFC and 25-1 for the SB, so I still have a week or two left before all the value is gone!!

    Steven A must have missed Sam's two seasons at the Panthers where he went 8-9 - that's not ineptitude, especially when Baker went 1-6 there, and everyone else including Baker went 5-28. If that's ineptitude then Kirk Cousins has been inept for 11 of his 13 seasons in the league.
    Little known fact - in 2022 when Darnold went 4-2 for the Panthers under an interim HC and after CMC was traded, his throwing accuracy was 77%, whereas Cousins went 13-4 that season for the Vikes with 76.5% of his throws on target (per PFR). So it really shouldn't be a surprise that Sam is able to operate the Vikes offence as efficiently as Cousins - he has a stronger arm, is more agile in the pocket, can move and make off schedule plays, and is a legit runner.
    Putting your whole assessment of the Vikes on Darnold also forgets that the roster is better and deeper overall, and that Brian Flores was able to add 8-10 handpicked players to fit his defensive scheme - a group that has barely had 3 games together and should improve as the season continues.
    It also overlooks that Darnold and KOC have destroyed two SB contenders (look at the carnage they caused to the 49ers roster by making them strain for every play) WITHOUT two of his top 3 offensive weapons - Addison and Hockenson.
    Buckle up - it's Jordan Love's turn for Flores's purple haze this week, and I'm really looking forward to watching Dallas Turner's 4.4 speed chasing old man Rodgers on those dicky tendons in London.

    Maybe Stephen A trying to be Skip Bayless . Stephen A was the one who said that Adam Gates looked High at his opening press conferences. Stephen A was the one who said Adam Gates shouldn’t be a head coach in the NFL. Stephen A recently was taking about the disfunction in Carolina over the past couple year. Yet he only going look at was Sam Darold didn’t do in those horrible situations. Shannon Sharpe recently said he doesn’t just look at if a play was good or bad but the reason behind why the play was a good or bad play. Stephen A being as smart as he is, should probably consider looking at the reason why Sam Darold wasn’t successful in those situations.

  • @EtheMagician

    How pathetic. Waiting for him to have a bad game just to avoid giving him props on First Take. And the 49ers had Deebo the whole game. He literally caught Purdy's final pass. That shows that he doesn't even be watching. And we beat them with McCaffrey last season. And we didn't have Addison or TJ this year so that excuse doesn't work. These are clownish takes from Stephen Hate Smith.

But how many QBs have been good with those teams over the last two decades. Aaron Rodgers? Quite obviously, that is just placing an already great QB on your team. Cam Newton? That was a completely different regime. At a certain point,, it just appears like you are upset that you were wrong.

    Darnold led the Viks down the field in a game clinching drive against the 49ers with out Jefferson, Addison, or Hockenson.. He can make it happen. I do hope he can start getting rid if the ball a bit quicker though. Maybe that will happen as he gets more familiar with the offense. Another thing they didn't mention was how effective the Viks run gane has been. Both Jones and Chandler are playing some good ball.

    Cris Carter knows from experience. He played for a different quarterback almost every year. Some of them were reclamation projects. Randall Cunningham, for example. Jeff George had his best year coming off the bench. There's also Warren Moon and Jim McMahon. And Vikings draft picks like Daunte Culpepper, Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon.
    Carter knows what he's talking about, and Smith needs to chill the hell out.

    The Darnold story is not complicated, although negative Nancys like SAS continue to carp about Darnold’s past record. He was a 20 year old with raw talent and a big arm who gets drafted by the woeful Jets organization - what could go wrong? He’s thrown in as the starter immediately with little to no development. He continues to suffer there through coaching changes and multiple systems. He’s eventually discarded when, not surprisingly, he hasn’t performed as desired. He gets traded to another organization, the Panthers, that isn’t quite as dysfunctional as the Jets but not much better. Ditto on coaching changes. In his last years there he’s forced to run a ridiculous college level offense under Rhule (who was clearly out of his depth as an NFL head coach). Fortunately, gets traded to SF, where, for the first time, he gets proper QB training and tutoring to allow his tremendous talents to flourish. It’s continuing at Minnesota. He’s just gonna get better. The past is not prologue.

    I think that what frustrates me most about Stephen's attitude is the reverence he has for the Jets as though Rodgers is the second coming of Brady or something. Yes, the Jets may be good, but the only decent team they've played all season is the 49'ers who blew the pants off of them. Yes, the Pats game was impressive, but until they beat an actual contender, THEY HAVE NOT PROVED THEMSELVES. But noooo because it's Rodgers the bar for being convincing is rock bottom but the despised Vikings cannot earn respect any way on this green earth short of doing well in the playoffs.
