As a 15 year veteran of the Auto Parts business, It is fairly easy to get the right bearings and possible races if they need replaced. They all have their part numbers stamped on them. And if worse comes to worse, A parts guy with the right skills can root through the parts catalog and find them by dimensions. Use to do those and Air and Oil filters quite often. Nothing like looking up parts for farm tractors and Semis. But was actually one of my favorites of my job. And don't destroy the great piece of history

Early in the Gtr dual clutch transmission days I’ve played the bearing games. You’d end up on your 7th cross reference to finally find an available part. Ultimately the spindle was trashed, actually bent! It’s back up and running down the road with a knee spindle assembly

I got my parents’ 66 Chrysler New Yorker in high school in ‘72 with 101,000 miles on it and drove it through college, got it up to 166,000 miles on the original engine by 1978. Loved that car. My first car in 1974 at 17 years old, and a senior in HS, was a 1966 Chrysler 300 2 door hardtop. A beautiful dark green car that was in excellent condition. Had the 325 hp 383XP engine. Paid $600 for it and drove it for 9 years doing ALL the maintenance myself. I loved the part where you said your Chrysler got 17 mpg on the highway. That's exactly what mine got on the highway, all the time. Single digits in the city however. Couldn't help but drive with a heavy right foot. Loved the sound the secondaries made when you stomped on it.

I drive a 1966 four door Buick Special here in Georgia. I named her after the original owner and have loved her since I bought her. She has become my daily driver and I can't tell you how many people come up to me just to check it out every time I stop for gas. These old cars are the unsung heroes that bring back such positive memories. Most of the people that come up to me recall fondly sitting in the back during some great road trip, or some awesome family vacation, or even just going to the sore with mom in the "ole grocery getter". Everyone says the same thing " man I wish I had that car now." or "I wish we never got rid of it!" As far as your car goes, I would turn it into the ultimate cross country road trip car. You now know everything that it needs to make it reliable and comfortable. I say buy a sticker from every state, keep it rolling, keep it making memories and pass it on to the next person who will cherish those times. . . that is the magic of these old cars.

My ex's family and I drove across the country in '79, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. to San Fransisco, CA. We left with 2 cars. One had a full going over. Wheel bearings, brakes, four new Firestone 721 tires, full service, "The Works." Mine was a '68 Delta 88. I put on a trailer hitch, and four re-tread tires, and filled the tank. The other car had two tires blow out on it before we got out of Florida. I mean, the 721s turned into balls of steel wool. Next, my car got run off the road just outside Mobile, AL. Into the ditch, rolling the U-haul trailer 360 degrees and landing it back on its wheels. The tongue twisted my new hitch and center-punched my trunk lock. Good thing I got the insurance! Back on the road the next day with another U-haul and a rental trailer hitch. A couple days later, around 1:00 am, we were on I-10 passing thru Texas, and the left front wheel bearing on the other car failed spectacularly. The brake disc, hub, and bearing cap all glowing bright orange, sparks flying. The driver managed to get it to the nearest rest stop. We got it towed into town and found a hotel for the night. The next morning we checked in with the garage, and the entire spindle, hub, rotor, and wheel were all no longer "separate" parts but welded together into one large unserviceable lump. No parts to be had for days, so my sister-in-law sold it to the garage for cash to cover towing and the hotel bill. All seven of us (5 adults and 2 young kids) piled into my car and made it to CA.
The moral of the story is, since then, I've never touched wheel bearings on a personal car unless they were bad. No repacks or adjustments, nothing. And I've never had a wheel bearing fail yet!
p.s. I became a mechanic in '82 and eventually earned ASE Master Auto Mechanic status (A1-A8, L1) which are still current.

Yes, you can mate an electric motor to a gearbox, but they generally don't need it. I believe here are a few bolt on EV- conversion kits that just use the original transmission. Pretty sure I've at least seen beetles with that setup. Good thing about those kind of kits is that it's totally reversible, just unbolt the ev stuff and bolt back the original drivetrain.

Some may say it’s lame or boring but hemi swap it! Understand 1 simple truth, many people love 4 door classics! When you have youngsters you want to enjoy your hobby with it makes it way easier to enjoy family time in a 4 door. Plus being cheaper to start with, 4 doors work well for that family man to get into the muscle/classic car hobby if they’re on a limited budget. I wish people would stop downing 4 doors and start enjoying them since everyday those old cars are harder to come by. 2 extra doors don’t change the fact it’s still a 60 year old vehicle!! I’m glad you showed that they can still make great memories regardless of the number of doors.

Hope the NY'er lives in, i know a guy whos does the newer Hemissesness swap into older iron, maybe a collab video with VGG might be an order?! Great video!

I can't believe I actually was in Winslow Arizona in 1995 towing a race car hauler, all my tools, '72 Trident motorcycle, books, personal belongings etc. & did not even know I was close to this place that I damn sure would have detoured to see.
Here's how you get those bearings without knowing the application. Remove them and get the numbers & brand of the manufacturer off the races and find a bearing outlet that can match the bearings by number, not application. I once paid an exorbitant amount of money for a bearing set to convert a 1970 Triumph Bonneville front neck from the individual ball bearing triple tree set-up on the drum brake front end it came with, to tapered roller bearings to mount a '78 disk brake front end on my old bike. Then when I converted other old bikes for other guys, I just used the Timken numbers I had written down and just went to my local bearing outlet and bout the bearings I needed for much less than the conversion kit.
Put in a Y block 318 (I used to have a dual 4 bbl manifold for that motor, but it's long gone now), 413 (dual carb version) or a 392 hemi & keep it on the road.

From the 1st episode when you said you were going to roadtrip it, I felt that your were going to get attached. Get an LS truck motor and throw it in. cheap-ish, relativity straightforward with the amount of swap kits out there, and you get a nice cruiser with a good story that you can hop into and drive whenever you want

As I said in the previous video, throw in a cheap 383, truck 361, whatever old big block mopar u can find. Cheap 2 barrel carb and make it a Highway cruiser
Staying big block will make it a easy swap than trying t find brackets, pulleys and accessories to fit a small block or other engine.
Keep it simple is the best way when doing projects way down the list otherwise they never get done.

Personally, there's a lot of us guys (me included), that would love to be able to have a car like that to daily; but sadly, we cannot afford to acquire or fix one up. You could implant an newer injected 318 and auto in it, rebuild the suspension and wheel bearings, give it a nice set of new tires including a SPARE, give it working AC, and do a giveaway with it. if nothing else, at least give someone a chance to give it a new life and enjoy it.

I drove my beloved 1969 Dodge Dart slant-6 cross-country starting in Brooklyn, NY ending in Monterey, CA ... two times! The second time I ended up in San Diego, CA. Wonderful cars. Cruising along at 55mph the car got close to 30mpg. Bad master cylinders in those Chrysler cars but everything else was smooth sailing.

Great Big Ride, I traded a 1959 Nash Metropolitan for a 66 Chrysler just like this car when I was in high school. Strange trade but the Chrysler was the same color as yours but sat in a screened car port for years. The car cleaned up extremely nice and I gave it to my mother and she drove it for about 10 years. The old 383 sounded awsome and everything worked including. A/C.

Jared, I think you need to find another powertrain for the other project. This car deserves to keep its 440. I find it ironic that the failures on this car most likely would not have happened with less huge ass rims. Get it some wheels that fit, fix what needs fixing, run the crap out of it. C bodies are really cool, all you have to do is ride one to realize that.

Don't know if you'll see this comment. But I would do what Cleetus does and drop in a junk yard LS V8. That'd upgrade it to fuel injection and give it some good horsepower. And I'd also change that front axle out for something a little more modern that the bearings will last on. As for the rear axle. I hear Jaguar rear axles are really popular for retrofitting to give a nice ride.

I definitely think you should save that New Yorker, even if you put a different drivetrain in it. I have a love for 4 door cars, especially the big American land yachts. I just saved a 66 Mercury Montclair back in November, 31,000 original miles.... Breezeway rear window, it was slated to be scrapped. I've now been driving it since the middle of April and there really is no better way to go down the road than on a big block powered couch.
