Hey folks! As I begin watching and reacting to the sequels, please be mindful of what you're typing in the comments. Believe it or not, it is possible to explain why you dislike a movie in a constructive way, that is free from insults and hate towards me as a person (or towards others who have commented). Crazy, I know. If you watch the entire video, you'll see that I had some of my own criticisms with this film too, but not enough to dedicate so much negative energy to it. I'm here to have fun, y'all. If you want to bathe in a hate bath, please go watch a RUclips video that bashes on this movie instead. I think you'll be in better company there. 💛

Yeah. I'm not a fan of these movies in particular as I feel that they fail to carry on the story of Lucas's saga in a consistent and adequate fashion but I'd be lying to be myself if there weren't any bright spots. I really love Finn's character in this movie for example.
Obviously, there are some people who take their criticisms of these films (like the prequels) WAY too far and to toxic extremes. As you said, there are constructive ways to respectfully critique a movie without being outright insulting to it's fans

Scarif only had military-related archives from the Empire (like the Death Star plans). All the other archives, including the map Kylo Ren was talking about, would probably be in Coruscant, the old capital of the Republic which was also the capital of the Empire. So yeah, the First Order probably stole that map from there.

As far as I can tell, the hate for these movies is born almost entirely out of the fact that the story didn't end up happening the way a fairly large portion of the fanbase thought it should have happened. I think one of the major issues I have with this film is how poor the world building is. I can understand that , 30 years later, there would be some remnants of the Empire who would want to keep on fighting like neo-nazis did after ww2.
But it's the fact that they've somehow amassed more resources than the Empire and built not just another Death Star, but somehow an even more powerful Death Star that I find baffling from a writing standpoint.
Plus, it kind of seems strange that they had this even bigger, mega Death Star being built and somehow the New Republic did nothing to stop them, despite being the governing force at the time.
And of course, that New Republic gets destroyed before we even see how it operates so that we can revert back to the classic Stormtrooper Vs Rebel conflict people are so familiar with.
I think that's my major issue with this film. It proudly wears the aesthetics of the OG trilogy on its heart but never goes beyond the imagery present and just feels.... shallow.
    Just my opinion

You cited the Nazis post World War II. A better example would be Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. 30 years later, Russia is arguable as powerful as the Soviet Union was.
I'd also point out that in the old EU, the Imperial Renmant remained a potent force 130 years after the battle of Yavin.
Finally, it took the Empire almost 20 years to build the first Death Star. That's a huge expenditure of manpower and resources. Yet they were able to build another Death Star in just 4 years.
These are movies about space wizards. They collapse under too much scrutiny. Much of the criticism of the sequels applies to all of the movies.

Luke married Mara Jade (jedi assassin). When Disney took over, they erased all the books, hence destroying SW Universe.

I would say Kylo IS having that internal struggle during his confrontation with Han, he's just been twisted inside to think that the dark is the only viable path left for him to feel better and then you see how after than he's off balance, it didn't give him the focus strength that he thought it would. It's also touching how even after being stabbed Han still shows love to his son in how he holds his cheek and how for as upset as Chewie is, he shoots for Kylo's leg/hip cause having seen him and than with blasters previously he could have killed I'm right there. There's 100% more going on under the surface with Kylo/Ben, the choices that he's made, the choices other's made that while well intended hurt him years prior but that's for later

Having gone through and watched your other reactions last week this is probably the one I was most excited for to see how you responded to the continuation of everyone's stories and the new Protagonists! I'll be honest I absolutely LOVE this film and it's one of my favourites, despite the hate the Sequels get I think this was a great starting point for a trilogy and a lot of fun.
A couple of things, you're so right about Kylo Ren being a complex character, and really he wasn't trying to lie or bluff Han, he really was being torn apart between the two sides of the force, "I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strength to do it" was killing Han and thus trying to embrace the Dark Side by cutting out the light to try and stop that internal conflict. The lighting in that scene is also great, as the sun fades it's a personification of the Light leaving Kylo, you'll see the aftermath of that choice in the next films.
Also the fact you picked up on the Bloody Hand print on Finn's helmet, I remember that being a big thing at the time as blood was so rarely seen in Star Wars as Lightsabers cauterize wounds and Blasters leave burns, it really added a bit of reality to Finn's first Battle and it's a unique perspective you never really get to see.
I'm looking forward to your thoughts about Rey, thinking she could be Luke's daughter because theories were absolutely rampant about who she could be or who she might be related to or not throughout this whole trilogy.
In the old expanded Universe (which I haven't read but know of) which is no longer Canon after the sequels came out. Luke did actually Marry a Jedi named Mara Jade as he was the head of the New Jedi Order he adapted it as it went forward as he learnt about the past mistakes of the Jedi. They actually had a child called Ben Skywalker obviously named after Obi-Wan. In the books Leia and Han have three Children, Anakin, Jaina and Jacen Solo, naturally the Skywalker bloodline each had issues with falling to he Dark Side since the original Anakin was a conception by the Force, what is interesting about Skywalker blood though is their ability to come back from it where many others can't. It's interesting to see that the films did take some inspiration from the old canon books namely when creating Kylo Ren/Ben Solo's character!
I'm glad you picked up on the way they utilised the Force in this film expanding on it's uses that are typically seen in the books, games and Cinematics rather than the films itself, like freezing someone in place, knocking them out or probing their mind. I still remember an audible shock from the Midnight showing when Kylo stopped the blaster bolt, you just knew everyone gasped so I'm glad you had a similar reaction!
Also just have to mention the sweeping "one-shot" of Poe's Black X-Wing taking out all those Tie Fighters it's just so fantastic at showing he's the best Pilot in the fleet and "Scherzo for X-Wings" is such a brilliant piece by John Williams which ties that whole scene together from the X-wings arrival at Maz' Castle!
A few fun callbacks too, in the opening with Poe and Lor San Tekka when Poe mentions the General Lor says "to me she's Royalty" referencing her status as Princess Leia which many may have forgotten about now that 30 years have passed his Alderaan was destroyed so new generations wouldn't necessarily know that.
When Rey & Finn are running from Jakku and she suggests the Quad Jumper Finn says "what about that ship" to the one off camera, Rey says that ship is "Garbage" similar to how Luke called it a "Piece of Junk" in A New Hope.
It might be worth looking up the Battle of Jakku (after you finish the trilogy to avoid potential spoilers) as there is background out there about how the Star Destroyers ended up wrecked there and even the Helmet Rey is wearing when eating.
There's also a couple of fun Cameos too, Unkar Plutt (the pudgy alien who gives out the portions) is actually Simon Pegg, he's friends with J.J Abrams after Mission Impossible and Star Trek and got offered that little role because he's such a huge fan of Star Wars.
James Bond himself also appears as Daniel Craig plays Stormtrooper JB-007, the one who gets Jedi Mind tricked into letting Rey go, if you re-watch that scene you'll likely be able to recognise his voice.
All in all I'm excited to see you react to the rest and I might just have to hop onto Patreon for even more because there's so much you'll enjoy from the series! Even if I think The Force Awakens is probably the best of the sequels, I can still enjoy the others as Star Wars is like Pizza "even when it's bad it's still pretty good" and there's enjoyable/fun/cool/epic moments to be found in all of them!

The Jedi prohibit attachment, but not physical affection etc. So without going into specific details, Luke could've had children - as long as he wasn't attached to the child's mother. Also, in Return of the Jedi, we see how the 'no attachment' thing destroyed Vader, and that perhaps the Jedi were wrong to prohibit it.

  • @xyrots
    @xyrots 2 года назад +4

Man, that first Leia scene hits so hard now. RIP Carrie Fisher. Also, the Jedi *were* forbidden emotional attachment but that is part of why they were destroyed. He is the 'last Jedi' but he isn't a traditional Jedi either since he didn't follow the Jedi code and specifically didn't do what was asked of him by original Jedi who followed the code such as Yoda and Obi Wan which was kill Vader. Luke saved the entire galaxy and himself with his attachment to his father. A real standout in this movie is like you said, the sound design. The scenes where Kylo uses the Force and especially the lightsaber ignitions, most notably when Finn ignites it outside of Maz's castle and when he and Rey ignite it against Kylo in the final fight are just top tier sound design. It was also just a one liner thing but at Maz's castle, Finn tells Rey that during his first battle he realized that being a stormtrooper isn't what he wanted and that he ran away, right into her. You were correct thinking that was his first battle

    • @thecartoonrobot
      @thecartoonrobot 2 года назад +1

I don't think this point of view gets enough play. Luke didn't do what he was told by the only Jedi he knew. He didn't stick to the code. I always felt that Luke could break from tradition and show that attachment can be a strength to Jedi, like in the now non canon books.
The Jedi made a lot of bad choices, and that's why they fell. Luke was different and it helped him succeed.

@@thecartoonrobot Spoilers for many future shows and movies that Kaiielle hasn't seen:
Clone Wars, Mandalorian, Book of Boba, Episode 8 & 9 spoilers
The Jedi broke their rules as soon as they allowed Anakin to start Jedi training. Taking him from his mom after he's already formed his attachment as opposed to where they usually take future Jedi when they're babies was them bending the rules in the very first chronological movie. Sidious exploited and manipulated them and their code perfectly, especially during the Clone Wars. In The Last Jedi, Luke even says that at the height of their power the Jedi allowed Darth Sidious to rise and take over the entire galaxy due to their arrogance. That it's vanity for the Jedi to have believed that the Force is theirs. If all the Jedi are gone, the Force and the Light will still be there as we've seen, it's not *theirs*. All throughout the prequels the Jedi are nothing but arrogant and it leads to their downfall. It definitely gets talked about a lot but it's also overlooked a decent amount like you said. One thing I thought was weird in Book of Boba Fett was when Luke tells Grogu he has to choose between giving up his attachment to Mando to become a Jedi and use Yoda's saber, or give up being a Jedi in order to keep that attachment. It's like D U D E, 5 years ago you saved the ENTIRE galaxy because you didn't want to give up your attachment to someone you didn't even know and had helped enslave the galaxy, but you want this baby to give up the only father figure its ever had? I don't know because I haven't read the books or anything, but in Luke's academy that was destroyed by Kylo, weren't they allowed attachments? I heard that they were but I don't know if that's true or not. I change my mind very often in how I feel about the direction they took Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy. I love it and I hate it so much and it doesn't help hearing that Mark Hamill himself hated doing it. Like you said, if anyone was going to make a new Jedi order where they were allowed to have attachment it was going to be Luke, and to know that they were all massacred and he exiled himself for it for years and allowed the First Order to grow in power. At times it just feels so different from the original Luke and there's other moments where it feels like the same exact character.

I watched your full reaction last night. This movie is very special to me, I grew up seeing the original trilogy in theaters in the 90s before the prequels came out. I got to experience the movies and the Darth Vader twist just like my parents did, I've been a Star Wars fan most of my life.
I've never been more excited for a movie coming out than this one. I saw it in theaters twice on opening day, I just wasn't ready for it to be over. Plus I saw it at an earlier showing the first time and I wanted to see it in a crowded theater and hear everyone's reactions. Totally worth it.
To me, TFA recaptures all of the warmth and magic that makes Star Wars, Star Wars. You commented in your reaction that the force which is Awakening is the force inside Rey, but I've always considered it broader than that. To me it is the reawakening of the magic of Star Wars - not only in-universe, with that of the Jedi, but also in the hearts of the Fandom. It made me incredibly hopeful for what this Trilogy was going to bring. I wish I could say I felt like that potential was fully realized. But still, that doesn't change the fact that this movie, to me, still stands as what I would consider to be the best reboot / follow-up to the original trilogy that I could ever imagine possible. I know not everyone agrees with that, but it's how I feel.

I think your initial feelings were correct about Kylo talking to Han. It was just skewed. It wasn't about just trying to trick Han. He meant every word he said. But what he was talking about was more "I want this pain and struggle to end, the pull to the light. I know what I need to do but I don't know if I can. I need to destroy all ties to that life, and that means I have to kill you." It was like you thought, a struggle, painful, complex, just coming from a different direction than you thought. Since you've already reacted to all of these and I'm late in finding your channel, I'm not spoiling anything hopefully, but Finn in my opinion was the "awakening" in the beginning of the movie he snaps out of the stormtrooper trance and felt what they were doing was wrong. Kylo also notices that feeling when he looks at Finn before boarding his ship. Snoke says before Rey even touches Luke's lightsaber that "there's been an awakening, have you felt it" alluding to Finn. Later on in that scene on mazs planet, when he leaves with the aliens that would give him a ride out, he hears the screams of the people before they died. Similar to obi wan in a new hope, we later do find out he was force sensitive the whole time. Disney just didn't do anything with it because they hate us. I really still love this movie though

The prequels and sequels were a bit different as one had to be planned out to serve as the beginning of the saga, while the other should have been planned out to serve as the end to the saga. The originals served as the middle chapter

@@onemoreminute0543 I agree, though I do feel even the prequels took a lot of liberties with the existing story. Like Obi-Wan and his whole story to Luke about how Anakin was already a "great pilot" when they met (losing all but one pod race never satisfied that for me). Clearly the original intent was that Anakin was older than 10 when he met him. And how he said he decided to take Anakin on (when it seems he really didn't have a choice but to do it or refuse his master's dying wish.) Or that Yoda was his teacher (maybe as a youngling).
It works vaguely in the sense of his "From a certain point of view" motif in Jedi (which was again a way to explain away changes made to tell the extended story, but the truth is, liberties are taken to tell the story someone wants to tell with the movies as they go on, but the previously ones don't quite fit that story. It's a long standing Star Wars tradition.

    • @onemoreminute0543
      @onemoreminute0543 2 года назад +1

@@thecartoonrobot In a sense they are plot holes, but they don't really harm the characters. If anything, those changes were great as they instead added to the characters.
Having Anakin be younger made his departure from his mother more poignant (adding to the tragedy when they reunited) and having Obi-Wan train him as his master's dying wish showed how he was unprepared to take on an apprentice. He wasn't able to fulfill the role as Anakins father figure, unlike Qui-Gon.
Having Qui-Gon be Obi-Wans main master was good as well as their differences complemented each other for TPM and it showed their differences in approach (Qui-Gon was 'feel, don't think. Trust your instincts' while Obi-Wan was 'Use the Force, think!')
By the end of the prequels, Obi-Wan and Yoda realized that their initial approach was flawed and so followed the example he set when training Luke.
Of course I suppose the 'from a certain point of view' aspect works well too

I left the theater really down on the movie because of the expectations that I took with me into the theater. You didn't do that here when you watched it... it seemed very much like you let the movie be what it was trying to be, and appreciated it for what it was. And that's inspiring. My take on the Han Solo confrontation with Kylo Ren wasn't so much that Kylo tricked him, but that he was deeply conflicted. He was struggling against what he earlier referred to as "the pull to the light". It could have gone either way, but in the crucial moment, his desire to be the new Vader, to earn his grandfather's mantle, tipped the scales. He thought by killing his father, that dark act would at last cement him within the dark side, it would wash away his doubts and give him the resolve and surety he was craving. And in the moment after he committed to that path, when his father looked in his eyes, touched his cheek for the last time, he was faced with the terrifying reality that it didn't work. He killed his father, and he felt more lost than ever.

I loved this at the movies, though I did get a little miffed by the lack of originality (that's why I love the prequels, they're so different). In terms of dislikes, my main reason for disliking the last three movies was that there were three books, written before the Phantom Menace came out, which effectively made (in my opinion) a much better 7,8 and 9. They used the old characters wisely and massively expanded the universe. My problems with 78&9 don't really start until the next film but watching it with someone else who has an open mind has a way of making me re-think my opinions, so I'm excited to do that. I feel these movies would have been better without the original cast, so they wouldn't have to kill Han - and they wouldn't have to break up Han and Leia's relationship.

  • @jozdundar

The audio element of the force was always there in all the films. Ben burtt had added a rumbling whenever the force was used. The sound design and surround sound mix of the original trilogy changed the game and created sound design as we know it today. You really can't judge the sound by just listening to two channels on a pair of headphones. 5.1/7.1 or atmos is a must. The LFE channel contains all the force effects. The deep rumble was always there.
If you're hearing it super loud now in this film, it's because the mix actually isn't the best when being mixed down to just two channels. Also, it's just following the trend of making everything louder and bass-er. Trying to make everything stand out. The subtle of sound is all but gone. The lightsabers have the same change. They are also bass-er and rumble more now as well.
Sadly the music mix was not as well as the other films -- play the opening crawls of Jedi vs Force Awakens and hear how much more hallow the music is. And the "punch" of the opening is just gone.
Just gotta point out that disney did not "make" the decisions they oversee Lucasfilm now that they own it and can veto $hit they don't like. But this is still a Lucasfilm production -- along with JJ's company along the ride. Just like a Marvel production is one of theirs.
Looking forward to the next reaction 👍🏻

So... remember that Star Wars is, and probably always will be poetry. Everything "rhymes" or mirrors something.
Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is a mirror to Anakin/Vader. Anakin was on the Light Side but struggled with the Dark Side pulling at him. Ben Solo is Dark Side, struggling against the Light Side in his core. This internal conflict is not only represented by his clear instability, but his lightsaber is also a reflection of it. It was explained that the reason his lightsaber's blade is unstable/fire-like is because the Kaiber crystal within it is cracked (something that happens when a Dark Side user fails to fully bleed/corrupt their crystal into a red one, which is the result of the person not being fully gone into the Dark). Also fun fact: In Colin Trevorrow's original version of Episode IX, Kylo would have gone 100% full Dark Side (Sith eyes and all), and this would be seen by his crossguard lightsaber being fully stable, symbolizing his full immersion into the darkness.

I think the main thing that people love about this film is that it has so many unanswered questions which leads to there being great potential for the story going forth:
-'Why is Rey strong with the Force? Who are her parents?'
-'Why did Luke not respond to Han dying or the rise of the First Order?'
-'Is there something deeper to Finn's backstory? Why was he the only First Order Stormtrooper to defect? Could he be a Jedi?'
-'Woah, who's this crazy new big Sith called Snoke? I wonder where he comes from? '
-'What is Kylos connection to Rey?'
-'Wow! Why did Luke's lightsaber call out to Rey? How did Maz Kanata get it?'
-'Who the heck are the Knights of Ren? They look so frickin cool! '
-'How did the First Order rise to power after the Empire was destroyed?'
-'How exactly did Kylo turn to the dark side?'
Well, we don't have any answers to those questions at the moment ladies and gentlemen. You'll get those answers in episode 8.
When you watch that film, you'll learn why it's the most divisive Star Wars film to date by far. The answers will either satisfy you or underwhelm you

Was also disappointed at how we didn't get to see the New Republic a faction that plays a massive part in the old EU books, for example, the Thrawn Trilogy so when I saw their Capital Sector and main fleet destroyed, I was like "Well shit there goes the New Republic guess we'll not be seeing them again" but overall I still enjoyed the movie just wish the plot was more unique. After this trilogy, I'm still not a fan of the First Order just don't care about them compared to the Empire, CIS, or the Republic so that impacted my enjoyment of the series.
The First Order does have some interesting ships I love their Star Destroyers the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer but everything else isn't too different or upgrades of Imperial ships and vehicles, for example, the First-order Tie Fighters which are two-seater, unlike the previous TIE models. The First order Ties were also outfitted with enhanced weapons and sensor systems as well as a hyperdrive and deflector shields something the Imperial Tie fighters of the Empire did not have.
If you recall back to the original movies Tie Fighters couldn't go into hyperspace and they didn't have shields along with no life support which is why Tie pilots had to wear those helmets inside. In other media like games and shows the Tie Fighters had to hook onto the button of a Gozanti-class cruiser which jumped them into command where they would disconnect. If you ever play Star Wars Squadrons, you'll get to experience this fun concept.
I remember a lot of people being confused at why the First Order used Tie Fighters 32 years after the Empire thinking stating the ships would be outdated but I personality did not mind as real-world nations like the USA still use ships, planes, Vehicles and jets created 50 years back at the time of the Cold War to the 1980s and the 1990s, so I'm not surprised that the Star Wars universe is the same. The First Order armor is also greatly inspired by Stormtrooper Armor there even referred to as Stormtroopers as well as keeping that whole "New Empire" vibe.
I do wish that they started right after Return of the Jedi and made a trilogy about our main characters and the creation of the New Republic to build up to the events of this trilogy which is my biggest problem the lack of worldbuilding in the sequel movies compared to the Prequels for example. The Sequels also lacked a plan pretty much the directors and writers had no idea where this series was heading until like the prequels where since Episode 1 the goal was to show the downfall of Anakin Skywalker and the fall of the Jedi and his transformation into Darth Vader. Sequels on the other hand jump about with ideas some were met, and others didn't go anywhere.
The Mandalorian is set 5 years after Return of the Jedi so it has done a lot of worldbuilding, for example, the appearance of the New Republic which I loved but it's still set like 27 years before The Force Awakens so I doubt the show will ever make its way into the Sequel era but it can build up and introduce stuff like maybe the early First Order or a look more at the New Republic in its early days. This is something the new canon books have been doing as well filling in the gaps.
My ideal plan would be a trilogy focused on our original trilogy characters set a few years after Return of the Jedi focusing on Luke's Jedi (mentioned in this movie where it's stated the temple was destroyed) Temple along with a look at Leia in the New Republic and maybe some little cameos of characters like Han and maybe even Lando. This of course will focus on the New Republic with the help of Luke's Jedi to hunt down the remaining Imperial forces who have broken up into smaller factions that are overseen by warlords. The movie goes through these events building up the universe currently along with Ben Solo ending with the fall of Luke's Temple. Then we jump 30 years into the future, and this is when the Sequels movies take place using the worldbuilding of the last trilogy to tell its own story without having to copy too much of A New Hope.
But overall, 2015 was an amazing year for Star Wars everyone was hyped that a new film was coming out and regardless of how people felt about these movies they can't deny the hype surrounding the film. Hopefully, you enjoyed it, and please don't be turned off by other people’s views 100% watch the other two even if people say don't. I'm not a big Sequel fan myself but it's just silly to force someone to not watch a movie because they don't like it lol I hate Batman and Robin but love to see people react to it for the craic.

I may as well reveal some details here, but the version of the sequels you've described is very similar to what Lucas wanted.
He stated that ep 7 would take place 'a few years after Jedi' and it's implied that there would be a timeskip by about 20-ish years in Ep 8 to then focus on the grandchildren as protagonists.
It's one of the various issues I have with TFA and the sequels as a whole - they fail to justify their existence as part of the story post ep 6 because , 30 years after that film, it's still the same conflict being fought.
However, by starting off a few years after Jedi with Ep 7, it gives room to explain why the story wasn't done yet. In Lucas's version, it was exploring how the fall of the Empire would lead to chaos which had to be resolved
      :)

In the books of Star Wars - Lost Stars and the Aftermath trilogy there was a battle over Jakku after the Endor battle and the Empire suffered great losses and that is how the Star Destroyer junkyard was made. After Rey touched the lightsaber is called a "Forceback" to let her know that the force was reaching out to her. Ok why I love the Sequels is I get to see Han, Leia and Luke at around my age (68), I love that Han and Leia are married . My all time favorite scene in all 9 Skywalker Saga films is in this movie. It is the last scene that Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford play Han and Leia. I love that scene very much!!.

KL, I know you’ve already started it so this might be a little late but i highly recommend you watch TCW in chronological order instead of season order because it gets so confusing. For reference the first episode chronologically is S2 Ep16 and then S1 Ep16 and then the movie and then S3 Ep1 then S3 Ep3 then finally S1 Ep1 so very very confusing. I made the mistake of watching it out of order and can say seasons 1, 2 and 3 were very confusing at times. You can watch it however you want but just a suggestion from someone who’s watched it both out of order and chronologically before.

I didn't know that Disney rejected George Lucas's story, so I was expecting a lot of things that he probably would've covered. Like what even is the First Order? How does the Resistance relate to the New Republic? None of this was explained at all, yet we're supposed to feel that the destruction of the capital is a big deal.
One thing Lucas makes sure to do is make all the planets different from movie to movie as much as possible. One of things I look forward to in Star Wars movies is the variety of locales in each film, especially the prequels. But there is absolutely nothing new and creative here. I saw Jakku and thought "ANOTHER desert planet? Just make it Tatooine since that's basically what it's supposed to be." Then they got to Maz's planet and it was just another forest planet. Ok, I get it, it's very green and Rey has never left the desert. Maybe we'll get some new planets later on.
But then we get to where the Rebel, er, Resistance base is, and it's exactly like Yavin in Ep.4. With all the places in the galaxy a secret Resistance could hide their base, THIS is the best they could do?
Well, Starkiller base sounds kind of new and interesting, right? Nope, it's just another forest/snow planet. Really?
It was really underwhelming and disappointing.

I always felt like Chewie was so distraught he needed alone time. He went from his best friend dying, to crazy escape and stuck in a ship with a bunch of people. I think he needed alone time.
I know on two occasions when I lost people that meant the world to me, I was irritated and angry with all of the people trying to hug me and share in my grief and just wanted everyone to leave me alone so I could process and deal. I came back to them for connections and hugging later, but it took time. So, from my personal experience, it made all the sense in the world. But I can see how it was odd for people.

So despite what you've heard about how negative people are about the sequel trilogy, many people including myself really enjoyed The Force Awakens. I was so hyped I saw it back to back on opening night. It was so exciting to have a new Star Wars movie trilogy to discuss and have fan theories on where everything was going. So overall I feel like the initial fan reaction to this movie was very positive.
One criticism people had was how it beat for beat pretty much follows A New Hope which you caught right away. That one is pretty much undeniable. However other people didn't like how they explained very little about what has been going on since RotJ and how we got here. One of the most vocal issues along those lines was how the hell is Rey so OP with the Force with apparently no training? There was a lot of back and forth on people calling her a poorly written Mary Sue character while others argued they were being silly as this is just the first movie and clearly they will explain her backstory. All those debates are really wild to think back on now.

Always enjoyed this movie. Not a big fan of the next 2 but this one still holds a special place in my Fandom of Star Wars. Being a prequel kid (Born in 94) I saw the prequels first when I was 7-11 years old. Then watched episode 4, 5, and 6 when I was 12 or 13. So although I recognized that the originals were better I still had this modernized cap on my brain that thought the old movies were kind of slow and action was lacking. So when this came out, it was the perfect combination of great action and fast pacing, but had more elements of the orginal movie in it story wise. This is probably my 5th favorite movie in the 11 movies. I have episode 3, 5, rogue one, 6, and then this and episode 4 kinda tied for 5th since they are basically the same movie lol.

There's a lot to like about the sequels. I especially enjoyed the acting from a lot of the new players: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Gwendolyn Christie, Domhnall Gleeson are all great. I'm not a huge fan of Adam Driver, but he was okay and did reasonably well with what he had to work with. The effects, sound design, music, set design, and other aesthetics are all somewhere between "fine" and "great". Lots of good technical stuff in the making of the film. Pretty good character design for the most part. BB-8 is awesome.
The most valid criticism of TFA, imo, is its treatment (or mistreatment) of Han Solo. It paints him as a bad father, a bad husband, a bad member of the Rebellion, a bad captain. And then kills him off for no real reason. He dies alone at the bottom of some pit, with no serious emotional weight behind the death. Chewie gets to rage for a second, Leia feels a disturbance in the force, and then we move on.
There are lots of other criticisms of the writing that are probably true as well. I've seen it said that the sequel trilogies focus way too much on trying to "fix" the Star Wars entries that came directly before them, which isn't a great production philosophy when what came before was valuable and loved. Changes for the sake of changes. Same with fan service - C3PO wasn't there to further any plot, but just to get him in there. Lots of missed opportunities for emotional moments. Iffy dialogue writing. Snoke sucked.
This is probably my 2nd favorite of the sequel trilogy, with Episode VIII being my favorite of the three. They all have their flaws, but there's a lot of good in them. And they're very easy to enjoy if you don't dig too deep.

I'm glad you're not sold on Finn, when I first watched this I HATED him and how overcompetent he was for a supposedly inexperienced rookie Stormtrooper - Rey I can buy, her being Force-sensitive, but FN-2187? Whole load of BS! And how does *everyone* (in the First Order) seemingly know him?! With that many Stormtroopers durdling around in full armor most of the time how are they supposed to know and remember each of them, especially someone so apparently insignificant as he was supposed to be? I feel like I had enjoyed this much more if not for him, it did have proper sets and models and all that again. Well, I'm not a fan of Snoke either but he didn't upset me as much as Finn managed to do. XD
On more positive side, General Hux was brilliant here, especially his Space-Nazi speech was a definite highlight of the movie! Chilling! And I loved BB-8, I can't help it, cute droids are cute. This is Disney we are talking about now, so no loss of limbs in the new movies...
Kylo is immature, frustrated and manipulated, don't see blatant toxic masculinity when there is none. Most of the time, what you define as TM is just that... immaturity coupled with insecurity. Females can be like that as well.
Just remember the last gesture of Han Solo towards his son; despite beeing assassinated by him, he still showed him some affection.
Saving people sometimes only works on long term, but you've got to plant the seeds first and wait.
I've delt with many bullies at school, sometimes you've got to recognize to whom apply wich strategy between responding with affection and caring or force. Not all bullies are the same. Some are just lost and insecure, those would need the most love. The others who bully just for the sake of it will respect only one language, someone who is stronger than them and anwsers in kind. Those are definitely not tamable nor can you ever save them, contrary to the first kind.
Listen again to the older movies, there is a sound when they use the Force as well, it is just less pronounce. -use the same headphones for a better scientific comparison that is.
