- "AFTER SCHOOL" EP - MELANIE MARTINEZ (Reaction and Review). My first time listening to Melanie Martinez thanks to the suggestion of a subscriber! So here's my first Melanie Martinez reaction & review! It's something... different.
Melanie Martinez, having first popped up on the voice, is now a fully-fledged artist! With quirky sounds and creative production, her poetic lyrics hit hard and deep. She seems to be completely in her element being vulnerable and I am obsessed. A mix of pop and alt. rock I didn't know I needed, Melanie is an OG. Reminiscent of Panic at the Disco, her lyrical play is complex and striking. Love it.

"I’ve been working on the After School EP since 2017. Over the course of these 3 years I’ve learned a lot and each of the songs act as a marker/screenshot for a certain emotion/lesson I was dealing with.
💗Notebook is a very emotionally raw breakup song from 2017 about setting boundaries after being taken for granted. (Queen of swords energy)
💗Test me is a song about accepting the challenges of life as tests from the universe that build strength and wisdom. It is also about understanding that your experiences in life/school teach you more than the actual classes themself. (Strength Energy)
💗Brain & Heart is about the importance of being balanced in your decision making. Using an equal amount of logic & emotion. (Temperance Energy)
💗Numbers is about feeling underpaid and overworked In a system that treats you like you’re disposable. (10 of wands Energy)
💗Glued is about attachment/detachment. When you’re completely attached you have the potential to get hurt but you are able to feel the depth of love. When you’re detached you save yourself from potential hurt but never get to feel that level of love. (Devil/Lovers Energy)
💗Field Trip is a more personal song about some of the intricacies of who I am as a human. Being an empath, a life path 11 (bridge between the divine and the material) The duality of my Triple Taurus and triple Scorpio placements. The contrast between what my mother was going to name me when I was in the womb ( katarina- pure light) and what she ended up naming me the minute I was born (Melanie - darkness) and also a reminder that whatever imaginary box people put me in I will always find a way out. 💗The Bakery is a song about unenthusiastically working at a bakery in high school because I needed to make money to invest into my art and my music. (8 of pentacles Energy)"

If you like this EP just wait until you see her visual album/feature film K-12! She wrote and directed a whole movie to accompany her second album. She's incredibly talented and creative and her music always talks on very real topics that you don't hear much in pop music. Also I love that you said you were getting early Panic! At The Disco vibes! I hadn't noticed that myself but it totally makes sense.

Melanie is an alternative musician, so her videos are creepy but cute and her songs have amazing lyrics. She's a singer, model, actress, songwriter, writer, film director, LGBT activist, and feminist. She write her own songs, her latest full album was K-12 which she directed,filmed,written, co-designed and it's her money (spending 7million) and gave it to her for free! Love her so much💕

Fun fact her line that says “katarina in the womb for 9 months till birthed me” is something that acually happened right when she was born her mother changed her idea of the name for the baby and changed it to Melanie

I've only been a fan of melanie since last year I did listen to her abit whilst in school due to friends but since then I stopped then k-12 came out and started listening to her again and haven't stopped since then but I have to say the after school album is great my favs songs from that are field trip and numbers

Sorry I'm 3 weeks late, but imma explain what each album/EP is about and the story. First you have to know, that Crybaby is Melanie's character, based off her experience, she creates that character. She was called Crybaby as a kid because she was sensitive. So the first album Crybaby is the start to the story, where she talks about deep things that happen more to yourself. The last song Mad Hatter, Is her embracing the fact that she's no longer innocent. If you watch her visuals, they bring a lot to the meanings. Next, K-12 which Crybaby growing up, with friends. In the music video for Mad hatter, she is given, we'll say, powers. Something like that, which few others at the K-12 school have the abilities. That talks about a lot more problems with the world, such as bulimia, Trump, pedophiles, and so on. It's fun trying to work out what it means. K-12 and Crybaby are connected with the character, the After School EP is her breath of air to her personal life experiences. The Bakery was when she was fired from the bakery she worked at. You should watch the K-12 movie she created, it's free on YT. Also The Bakery was made by a different producer, and you clearly picked up the difference. You'll learn more in other comments hopefully, I just gave you the basics. If you got this far, wow.

i feel like the bakery is just a filler song because she was asked to make a title to promote the ep... it isn't as good and deep as the rest and it isn't as fitting as the rest. it's still pretty decent but it gives me those vibes.
