typically sheep farmers will have herding dogs and guard dogs, but rams do not get along with guard dogs - and for those they use donkeys because they're tough. They also don't mind each other. At least this is what a in-law who grew up on a farm told me.
In Texas donkeys are used with livestock to defend against dogs, coyotes and mountain lions. A few donkeys will kill a young lion. Donkeys pretty much take care of themselves and are adapted to survive anywhere but they can be temperamental and will kill a pet dog if they are not accustomed. Live stock guardian dogs are used a lot for sheep and goats but dogs require someone to feed them every day. I’ve been on some very large ranches that used 4 or 5 Perimese dogs that guarded large flocks of sheep and we were under strict rule to never pet the dogs. The sheep were checked/fed, dogs fed everyday and no dog had names. They simply had a job and they did it well. Some places you cannot get out around the sheep because the dogs will bite you if they are not familiar with you.
