This is a funny clip - it feels unusual for willie to be playing without the family backing him, but I feel like he did this a few times in the 80s? Thanks for uploading, dig it every time!

There was a period of time there when Willy had two bands; his country band called "The Family" and this jazz band which I had the privilege of playing with on this tune as well as some others . I think people weren't aware, for the most part, that Willy was and still is (thank God) a HUGE jazz fan and since The Family couldn't play jazz at all, allowed Willy to 'have his cake and eat it, too. @@sidsims3765 Is that you playing that beautiful walking bass line? That's funny I didn't realize that was the reason why - explains that whole ACL special with a different backing band. How did the formation of this band come about?

@@squirrelseer As I said, Willy is and has been for many years, a HUGE jazz fan and has been using some amazing jazz phrasing in his singing of non jazz songs. Since his 'family' musicians for the most part weren't conversant in that genre, Willie put together a group of amazing musicians centered around the mind-blowing guitar player, Jackie King (RIP) who for many years was my 'bestie'. Jackie put the rest of the band together using some great players he had worked with in California, He had been using a different bass player, but decided to give me a call for this gig. No chance would I say 'no' for the opportunity to play with Willie and Ray Charles on the same show!. Anyhoo, I had a great time playing with all those monsters without, for the most part, any rehearsal.
