BECOMING A RESCUE DIVER IN MALAPASCUA // Solo Backpacking the Philippines

  • In Episode 9 of my Solo Backpacking the Philippines series, I take you to Malapascua! A small island about 45mins off the northern tip of Cebu. It is famous for diving so I thought what better thing to do than to get my Rescue Diver qualification - a step closer towards becoming a Dive Master! I had to complete my Emergency First Response qualification also, in order to do the Rescue course. This is my experience.

      Particularly when you have got your DM, which will be no problem for you as you have great skills, diving for pleasure with a group you don’t know try to only show your Advanced Open Water C card when you sign up for the trip. That way you will get at least the first dive being treated as a guest rather than an additional unpaid member of staff being asked to ‘just look after the stragglers at the back’ when your skills will peg you as a DM or Instructor. You will thank me later for this advice :)

    I’m an Advanced Open Water diver and I just went to Malapascua for 10 dives in 3 days 4/4 to 6/4 (maybe my trip got an overlap with yours!) . I had a panic situation at my 9th dive at Kemod Shoal where we finned out to the deep blue away from the sunken island which is only at 12m deep, all the way to an open area that has a bottom at 220m! We went there wishing to see hammerhead sharks, but it turned out just a few tunas swimming at the deep and nothing else, absolutely nothing else but just deep blue into infinity.
    I couldn’t have imagined myself being so nervous and all of a sudden my breath got quicker and at the 3rd nervous inhale I felt like I was short of breath. I looked down, then looked up to the far water surface, we were told to keep our depth at max of 25m, but as I got no visual reference, I can only focus on my dive computer which tells me how deep I’m at, and when looking at the digits gone up or down, I immediately react to it as we were taught to be, but later on I guess I got overwhelmed by that and fear comes in. I saw the others being gracefully finning, calm, just me being in fear. I immediately went to ask for help from the dm but not my buddies of similar level.
    It was a scary experience, yet I made it to finish the whole dive for 60mins with Nitrox, because I signalled the Dive Master that “I’m not OK” hand gesture, he came to me to comfort me and calm me down, kept asking me if I’m ok, slow breathing in breathing out, and hold my bcd all the way until I’m less nervous, he found planktons and jellyfish that glows to attract and divert my attention away from the panic, and then I continue with the rest of the dive on my own. It was a life experience and when I got back onto the boat, I started to vent the suppressed fear inside me, I burst into tears, I felt glad that I’m alive.
    I was with Malapascua Exotic Dive Center, and I’m glad that the DM was very professional. I just want to share my experience that being able to rescue someone underwater is a BIG thing. Thank you for your wonderful and informative video! I am considering doing a rescue course like what you did! But I wonder if there is no practice of saving a diver at underwater besides at the surface? That’s situation when real danger kicks in......
    Feel free to visit my Instagram at bestcapture_yololty for my Malapascua trip! Nice to come across your channel, I love your videos!
    I’m Carol from Hong Kong :)

    • @BackpackingBananas
      @BackpackingBananas  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Carol! Omg that sounds so scary! Glad you're okay though! Goes to show that even experienced divers can get panicked underwater!!
      Yes we did cover how to deal with these situations underwater! Just didn't film them for this vid as it was a bit trickier.
      Well done to your Dive Master for helping you calm down. I'm not surprised you cried when you came up, I imagine that must've been rather traumatic ☹️

    loved the vid! but how do you log dives? is there an app ? or do you have to film them? very curious

      When you do your first qualification, you get given a log book 😊 but you can also do it on an app. But it needs to be signed/approved by the dive shop you have gone with
