Why do I love this song so much? It's like some other-worldly ecstasy I feel and sometimes I cry. I just love it. It moves my insides around. Thanks David Byrne.
Have you listened to this song on the live concert Stop Making Sense? It's at least just as good as this, if not even better, Talking Heads was one of the best live bands
David Byrne's idea of a "love song" It's called Naive Melody because the bass and lead are repeating an ostinato for the entire song. Byrne said professional musicians wouldn't play a song written in that fashion, hence the melody being naive. One of their greatest compositions ever.
Don't forget that the instrumentation is done in a "naive" fashion as well. Weymouth, normally the bass player, plays guitar and the guitarist, Jerry Harrison, plays a synth as does Byrne who, as you may know, typically only sings. I believe I read somewhere that this method was part of what makes the song what it is. The instrumentation is simple because proficiency was not a part of the composition process. It truly adds to the feel.

Yeah no shit!! And pair those words with the hauntingly perfect music, this is a fucking masterpiece of wonderful talent! This song definitely belongs in the very elite group, of one of the best songs ever written!
My peeps know to play this AND Led Zeppelin Kashmir and RUSH (grieving person gets to pick song). If Tony A is still around, he can adjust the list for me. Add English Beat, Ozzy, Neil Young, Joe SATRIANI the same song every one wants to hear again. Exactly as recorded before 30 years went by….(he rocks it still, “always with you, always with me”..).
"There was a time before we were born" seems to come out of nowhere, but it beautifully conveys all the improbability and wonder of any two people coming together. Romantic science from one of our greatest agnostic gospel singers.
I'd be honored if some Talking Heads fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performance of THIS MUST BE THE PLACE (re-interpreted as a ballad) on my YT channel in tribute to one of the most unique & iconic bands of the late 70s/early 80s era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and everyone stay safe.
Lol. This was hubby n my “first dance” at our reception when we were married in 1985. So funny to watch reactions of all guests who were expecting Elvis or something. He and I have never second guessed “our song.”
This song has been an intimate favorite since I first heard it as a struggling depressed college student. I got to see the band on tour in Lexington KY - a highlight of my young life. As a good musical mom I introduced my children to their music. And then my son tragically died at age 20 in a wilderness accident. I wrote out the lyrics on special paper and sang it over him and then tucked it into a niche in the rocks near his final momentarily alive place on earth. I’m hoping it will also be my farewell song.

It's one of my favorite songs from Speaking in Tongues. They, the T-Heads, had many good or great songs; some were under-rated. RIP, former T-Heads band. At least David Byrne carries on.

Been in love with this song since the mid-80's, and it amazes me that I get the same feeling at the beginning every time. So profound and uplifting at the same time, like my wife on a good day, lol.
My Dad was born in 1929 and loved Sinatra. But he became a fan of the Beatles and Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel. They didn't prepare him for the Talking Heads on SNL. But over time he grew to love them.
i love that this has dynamics to it. it’s not just “blast your eardrums” loud. it’s mixed so that you have to turn it up really loud to feel it’s true power. music now is way too loud.

Have you ever heard a song and it makes you feel all the emotions. This is that song. It makes me feel however I need to be feeling in that moment- sad, happy, nostalgic, excited, melancholy, hopeful.
Times when I think I know what it’s like to be home but I have no where to go. I leave and keep heading out, looking out into the horizon. Somewhere I will feel this song and everything will be okay.
This happy tune is just awesomeness! Everytime i hear it i cant seem to hold still. My body starts moving with the rhythm no matter where i am or what im doing! ❤
Glad im not crazy lol, i knew i couldn't be the only person who feels cradled while listening to this masterpiece of a song. A distinct 80s baby lullaby to remind me of a place that still exists before life got out of hand
The song is not only a good one to listen to, it's amazing to break down; the singer tells the story of someone born with heart problems who tries ignoring it and says everything will be ok, that they have plenty of time. After getting into a relationship, home feels as if it's where they belong. They always want to be home. Their heart gets worse. The person then kiss their partner goodbye before telling them how beautiful they are and how they've always been there for them, even with the heart problems. They then see the light that covers everything and die. This story is truly heartbreaking
lust for life, love, time lost, days that passed by, all that in one song... "Hi-yeah, you got light in your eyes And you're standing here beside me I love the passing of time" "Out of all those kinds of people You got a face with a view I'm just an animal looking for a home Share the same space for a minute or two" those two parts always make me melt inside.
After all these years, like even right this minute, I cant hear this song without weeping, tears streaming. Only one other song has ever touched me so deeply, stayed with me so long. Its Ventura, by Lucinda Williams.
I love that for everyone this song seems to transport them to such a magical place/ time. Whether it conjures up happiness from the fun times, or a melancholic nostalgia, the emotions are always powerful.

I do too. It makes me feel however I need to in that moment in time. Happy, melancholy, excited, relieved.
Not the only one who cries at this? I SERIOUSLY DON'T cry at songs. Really speaks volumes about how special it is.
Every time I get numb, this is the song I jam too.
It really is a special one .
Heaven live by David byrne does the same for me .
As someone once said "it doesn't get any better than this, not even the same band playing the same song. God was in the studio that night"

I read your comment every time I listen to this and god surely was in the studio that night.

Playing an ostinato well for a whole song is not as easy as it sounds
