  • For the latest edition of our series Queering the Screen, Logo caught up with 'The L Word: Generation Q' showrunner Marja Lewis-Ryan and actors Arienne Mandi (Dani) and Leo Sheng (Michah) to chat about the reboot of Showtime's cult-classic lesbian drama from the early 2000s. We discussed auditioning for the reboot, getting trans representation right the second time around, and what to expect from tonight's season finale.

It's sweet how honest Ari is about herself and touching how the serie made her change as Gigi makes Dani change.

What a surprise. Something Marja worked on didn't work. Get a new showrunner for the L Word Generation Q. Get someone who has more respect for the original series and an ability to seamlessly blend the original characters and the new characters.

If people think Gen Q is a flop, does that mean you don’t want to see more? I agree, I don’t love it as much as I loved the original L Word, but I was also a completely different person 10 years ago. I needed the L word wayyy more back then versus now, which I think is why people are so harsh today. Remember when social media wasn’t really a thing.. there is so much more out there for the baby gays. Stick with the show.. I can tell you I for sure want more even though I don’t love all of the story lines.

I also was thinking that "new" Alice is better, but it feels like more inner strength of the same person. I like it.

I'm not optimistic that a season 3 is happening. As bad as the writing was, I still want there to be season 3. We just need better, experienced writers.
The concept of time doesn't exist in TLWGQ and that's one of my biggest problem with the show. Also, too many storylines happening at once. I hope if we ever get a 3rd (IF), they focus more on fleshing out the characters.

Marja did a shit second TLW Gen. Q, focusing in 2 characters without interest(Sophie and Finley... it was long and boring 😴), Bette that we 💘 😻 has been transformed in a terrible and worst person(unnecessary 😒), the relationship between Bette and Tina is finished and it will be this way because has became toxic and Alice merit a happy end because we love Leisha and Alice. Shane/Tess and Dani/Gigi was a blessing 💖

I'm so sorry to say this but Marja is so full of herself. This isn't the first time she implied that her version of the L Word is much better than the original. She doesn't realize just how "boring" her episodes are. The things that should only happen in one episode is being distributed for the entire season like she doesn't have that much ideas and script for the characters and her ideas and script for the characters aren't even that interesting or creative.

I love how she talked about Max's rep on the show was bad for trans people and that Gen Q would be better for rep when they are treating Micah's character the exact same way they treated Max. Like a side character. If you can't or dont know how to utlize him in this world then dont write him.

Marja is delusional for implying that her version of the L Word is better than the original.

Alice is better why? because she's got a boyfriend for the entire season 2 and that never happened with Ilene Chaiken? lol. Marja is so full of herself.

Gen Q is a flop. Bette finding Pippa is the only redeemable quality of the show for me. We had to fight so hard to get some real black love and better representation of black people on the show.

Marja has always indicated that her version of the L Word is better than the original and I don't know who agrees with her other than herself and a couple of her followers because everybody else knows that her statement is not true. But real black love? what is that? love between blacks? lol. There's no color when it comes to love and that's why it should just be called "love" and nothing else. Anyhow, Bette and Tina's daughter is literally black and she's part of the main cast. Bette herself is half black. Bette and Tina has always been the endgame couple. It has nothing to do with their race or ethnicity but they are the couple that will never move on from each other so they should just stay as a couple forever.

I agree 100% and I’ve posted the same exact thing basically that you’ve written on other video comments because this is not about race it’s about a love story… It doesn’t matter what color Bette or Tina would have been… It’s about them not about Bette being with someone else because she’s black versus white… It’s absolutely ridiculous people trying to compare what would’ve been a 17 year relationship and history together with someone Bette approximately knows for two weeks according to the timeline…
This is the show runners fault and the writers… And if they get a season three and they don’t fix it after thousands of fans invested their time for six years in the staple couple of the show… Then even though there are younger fans now who just like Dani and Gigi .. They will not have a fourth season if they lose all of the Tibette fans because there are still thousands and thousands of them… The show is a sinking ship right now if they don’t get their act back together…
and then people turning this into a race issue is absolutely absurd… it’s a love story… It’s not about what race the people are!!!!!

If someone uses the term 'black love', perhaps ask them what that means, and why they feel it's important in terms of representation, instead of mocking the term, thus showcasing your obvious ignorance 😏
Anyway, if Marja gets a third season, it'd be great if the show could also focus on the deep rooted anti black racism that is clearly very prevalent in the lesbian/queer community 😏
