    I, Japanese use “Konnichiwa” to people like not so close or older people. For example, I go to community center to learn English and every time I meet them, I say “Konnichiwaaa-“

      I'm pretty sure konnichiwa is formal so using them when greeting close friends makes it sound like you arent friends

      @@m1racul0a. No, hajimemashite is formal and it is only ever used the first time you meet somebody, it is part of a self introduction. It literally means "Let's begin [our relationship], but is roughly akin to the English "Nice to meet you".

      In Croatia We say ti for friends and family but for formal and elderly people we say vi and they both mean you

    I think that to friends or relatives you say “Yahoo!” To greet them but when its teachers or elders you say “Konichiwa” to have respect on them.

    I'd rather say just "おす" or "よう". these are very common way to greet between my friends imo. It depends on where you live but at least in Tokyo people say like them.

      Sauf qu'en français c'est assez différent. Bonjour c'est formel, salut ça peut être bonjour ou bien au revoir de manière informelle. Sans compter les ciao, etc.

      Really? I use yo! a lot and I'm female. All my friends do in fact. I asked my friend from Japan and she said that more and more girls are using male/casual terms so it's pretty normal over there too.

      @@thegate8985 'Otsu' is more like showing appreciation for or recognising someone's hard work. I've seen it used for goodbyes a lot, though it can also be used as a greeting when, for example, meeting a friend after work. It's a shortened version of 'otsukare sama deshita/desu'.
      As for 'ossu', it's actually a shortened version of 'ohayou gozaimasu', which is 'good morning'. It's a completely different greeting, not at all related to 'otsu'. I'm not sure if it can be used if it's not morning though.

    This only applies if you are under a certain age. Adults don't talk this way. If you reach a certain age, you don't use yaho at all, not ever. It's kid's talk. You use kon'nichiha also with friends and family.

    "Yahoo" sounds quite informal and rather trendy. If a middle aged salaryman like me uses that with my coworkers I imagine I'll probably get odd stares with a dash of "Kimoi". It will be like the "Hello, fellow kids" meme.
    Anything else I could use that's more appropriate to my age?
