Do you recommend getting trip insurance?

For trip insurance for plane tickets and such, I've never purchased it. Most of the time it's not worth it. Most of the budget ticket prices are non-refundable so there's definitely some risk involved. However, for true emergencies most airlines would probably work with you (though Air Canada will not).
On the other hand, travel insurance can be worth it, and it would usually include various aspects of trip protection. But it also includes actual medical emergencies. That being said, I've only ever purchased travel insurance once and it was for my solo trip to Fiji. But if you choose to get insurance, I'd suggest travel insurance rather than basic trip protection.
Paying extra for car insurance is not necessary (unless the destination requires it for everyone). Most American car insurance policies include rental car insurance and most credit cards also offer rental car insurance!
