This traditional story was told at Christmas time from the 18th century. People would recite or sing the spooky tale of a bride who accidentally locks herself in an oak chest during a game of hide and seek. Percy Stow's charming film uses trick photography to evoke her ghostly spirit. This is a shorter version of the restored film; the full-length, eight-minute original can be found on BFI Player, also with new music by Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne, commissioned by the BFI.

Amazing restoration, BFI. Wonderful work, beautiful scenes, a great melody.
Very impressive material and it was on 1904.
Must have been quite an impressive visual effect back in 1904!!
A 15th century ruined Manor House in Minster Lovell has this story attached to its history.
I been there. There are at least 5 houses that claim the legend though.
118 years old...this is huge!
Excellent restoration. Does this mean that the full 8 minute version does not exist?
Quite macabre. Nice setting. See the full 8 min film in BFI player listed above, which fills it in better.
