Cari, I am also very fascinated with the history and how it affected Berliners. Every German I know has an amazing story about the night the Wall fell. I love hearing these stories so much.
I’ve been there before and I actually got the chance to meet an old lady who had actually suffered the tragedy when she was very young. She said that it was very hard to get food back then and her mom always told her to pray and wait. You can sense the happiness when she told us the moment the wall were destroyed. I can’t imagine being in her place. That literally the saddest thing I have ever heard of. My visit to Berlin was filled with the story of Berlin Wall and I know how the tragedy had put a very deep cut to them who were there.
I was in (West) Germany in the military in the early 60's. I knew some German, but could not get off-base to practice with the natives as much as I would have liked. German is a beautifully synehtic-sounding language (something elegant about the way you stack verbs) that reminds an English-speaker of what his language used to be. I will attempt to regain what little Deutch I had 50+ years ago. You're fun to listen to.

I find the history of post World War II Germany very fascinating, and you and your team do a great job telling the stores. I have been to Germany a couple of times, and even though it was only for a short time, I could tell a difference in mindset between areas that had been West German as opposed to East Germany. It seemed like those in the east were more reserved and maybe more shy. All your videos are very well done, but my favorites are this one and the other one where you interviewed people who shared their memories about the night the wall fell. Keep up the great work.

And it was my father who gave me this news .. at that time in India there wasn't much access to world news but I remember my father came to know of it and felt like it was important enough to tell a 6 year old. I remember when the Berlin Wall came down. I was watching the evening news with my grandmother and she was very happy about it. She remembered when it was built and how sure she was, at the time, that it would _never_ come down.
I visited Berlin for a few days in 1985 while the wall was still up. I went into East Berlin twice; once with a group and once by myself. On my solo trip, I had 2 memorable events. The first was when a stranger came up to me on Unter den Linden and after talking to me for a minute, he asked me to please give his relatives in the West a message. I knew better than to agree to that just in case the guy was actually Stasi. The second event was when I wanted to go back to West Berlin. I had crossed over at one of the S-Bahn stops, probably Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse. When I went back to the station, there were absolutely no signs anywhere showing how to cross back. I had to ask one of the clerks who, without really even looking at me, quietly told me to go through the glass doors. Actually leaving was pretty easy, but having the border "hidden" was more than a little freaky.
World war is always a major topic in history lectures in any western school, it's always fascinating to see it from a German perspective for a change (as weird this may sound). Thank you for the enlightenment. Take care!
I’m from the Netherlands and I haven’t seen Berlin yet. I have visitid Germany many times. Last year I was for the first time in the eastern part (Spreewald). And it surprised me that the vibe in the eastern part is so different comparing it with the western part.

It was another world, another time. In GDR Berlin there was a memorial to fallen Border Guards. Along the GDR's rural border there were civilian volunteers who donned uniforms and helped the Border Guards keep watch: the Freiwilliger Helfer der Grenztruppen. The quick and popular demise of the GDR would suggest there was never anything there but repression, the long and still existent aftermath makes one wonder.
