"Played 29 times between December 1984 and September 1987, Tons Of Steel was Brent's only lead vocal contribution to the Grateful Dead's 1987 commercial hit album In The Dark. Two years later, on the Dead's final studio album, Brent had four songs, demonstrating his ongoing strong songwriting contributions to the Dead's legacy right to the end of his tenure with the band." - David Lemieux
Some people say they don’t like Brent’s voice, especially as backup vocals. However he truly was a legend and a staple of the 80s era of the dead. Nothing but pure talent
Oldest heads “Pigpen Man” Middle period “Keith &Donna Man” But we have love for all - “But Brent/Jerry Man!!!!” I’ll call this the Golden Era!!! Saw many in that zone-yes the road was a bit rough at times, but wow
Still (and shall always) remember exactly where I was, what I was doing and not being able to hold back the tears….when I heard the awful news. Never again did I actually love watching Grateful Dead Music. Oh by the way, had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Mr Midland in Hartford. 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵
When Jerry and Brent were locked in tight together the energy was just as good as it gets. Jerry’s solo soaring here and Brent giving a little extra on “ I have prayed to god, now, this ain’t the day we meet!” Both of them feeding off the talent of the other and showing off some good ole fashioned Grateful Dead.
Grew up with this era of the Boyz. Brent was an over-the-top talent and that voice added SO much to the mix. I miss him. And always love love LOVED this song!🧔♂️🌹💀❤️💥💥😘
Finally!!! This is so good, especially the collective chorus. This is a sneaky really really good - optimism filled melody - 80s dead tune!! 87 was a certain kind of peak for the dead!

I originally laughed at this song. Not because it was bad but I wasn't ready for brents lead and I thought it was cheezy sounding but I love it now and I love Brent's voice and his keys. He can't help that it was the 80's he used whatever was cutting edge at the time. Some of the late early and mid 80's mixes sound bad or unbalanced either too much on the keys or too little same with the bass sure some of it sounds cheezy now but I learned to respect what Brent brought to the band.
I love this song. As a newer dead fan (born 1998) I’ve had to discover the eras of their music on my own. Still my favorite band, and imo Brent is the best singer they ever had. The feeling and emotion… I’m surprised I don’t blow away ;) anyways rip and so much love and I miss this amazing musician
Brent was a Yacht Rock musician at his core. Him, Bertie Higgins, and Michael McDonald could have toured together as a package deal. The Yacht Rock Review Tour 2023. The Final Cruise.
Great video, great song. They all look in great shape. This is one of very few Brent songs. I saw them four times during his tenure, starting in 1979 in Ann Arbor, the last at the World Music Theater, Tinley Park, IL, which, if I am not mistaken, was his last show. He was perfect for that time. They were a different band in each era.
Brent was a very good organ player and a very good harmony singer. His original songs with the Dead are average at best. However his cover of Pocky way, Dear Mr. Fantasy/ Hey Jude are fantastic. This song would be fine for Poco

Sure had a beautiful voice.
I just to jam this tune when I operated a locomotive at the local gravel pit!
Love Brent.
Probably my favourite Brent tune along with Just a Little Light.
Brent was a force !! What a beautiful voice ❤

Gotta love the shows during the '84-'89yrs
I enjoyed just a little light

You know this is the fun of the deads large discography. I didn't know this song before, like 5 seconds ago and I'm digging it.
I wish i could go back in time
Love this song
I saw this tour in Tacoma and Santana led the show. Truly awesome 😁!
Dam I love this song!! It's an absolute jam!! 🕉⚡️🍄☯️☮️
Brilliant 😍😍 he had a beautiful voice
This has been one of the most Gratefully and fondly remembered tunes of the Dead for these ears from the late 80s onwards.
Finally!!! This is so good, especially the collective chorus. This is a sneaky really really good - optimism filled melody - 80s dead tune!! 87 was a certain kind of peak for the dead!

Better than I expected for sure
Heard this live at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in 1989....Great song for the venue and Brent rocked The Igloo!!
The best video of Brent’s era!!!
...for a bunch of unexplainable reasons, I reaLLy needed to hear this today. Thanks Brent :)

I went from Greensboro to Madison square one year. The rain Forest show. RFK JFK...what a blast tour. Had a Chev chevette. Rolling baby.
Good ol’ Concord boy 🤘🏽💀⚡️
Dig it!
Jerry dances around the fretboard, total improv, and never hits a bad note. Amazing to me as a crappy guitar player :)
Such a great talent lost too soon. 😢
I remember 2 songs being played live, Touch and Comberland from all the shows ive seen.
I had a good time every time.
Loved this tune from the very first time I heard it.
Shine boy 💜✨🎹🎤✨💜
RIP everybody..
This was three days before I was born. 😂❤
Farewell Brent! I will always miss your wonderful Piano riffs! Naomi RADTKE
The very best version. Phil's backups are great.
Brent was a Yacht Rock musician at his core. Him, Bertie Higgins, and Michael McDonald could have toured together as a package deal. The Yacht Rock Review Tour 2023. The Final Cruise.
And Jerry loved him for that.
Y E S
Yes, I always thought him and Michael McDonald were of the same ilk.
One of their most underrated tunes. This and "When Push Comes to Shove"
Jerry was grooving 🙂
jerry sure digs this one...look at him SMILE
One of my favorites, wish they played it more
Brent Dead = Best Dead

A voz do Phil junto com a de Brent 💙
One of the best “hot dog” songs ever played.
✨⚡💀⚡✨
We were standing right in front of Brent at this point of the show. For the second set and Dylan's set we were over on Phil's side.
It seemed this version of the band was going to go on forever
My first show!!!
I’m here for Vince
Ok
So Brent rocks
As did Pigpen both were fantastic
repolace the She with brent please! She's more a roller coaster than the train I used to know!
We love Brent in my house especially that Feel like a stranger from Without a net - that dbl jewelcase never left the minivan
García seems to really enjoy his solo here.
😊
Brent died exactly 3 years after this show.
❤😢
So sad
A total # of Good Wishes!

At one point in this show Jerry did a 360 on stage
A lot of heads hate this song, I don't think it's too bad
oh and they prefer john mayer butchering the dead songs?

I miss Brent, also
Brent wrote some really great music
THIS song should’ve been the big one off In The Dark…truly wonderful
Brent was a very good organ player and a very good harmony singer. His original songs with the Dead are average at best. However his cover of Pocky way, Dear Mr. Fantasy/ Hey Jude are fantastic. This song would be fine for Poco
😂
Yup.
only reason you’d want to hear this song @ a show is if you really had to piss…
Jerry looked and sounded awful on this take.
Im sure you would have sounded better😂
Thank you!
