  • How To Inspect & Clean a Nikasil Cylinder: www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sa...
    Nikasil plated cylinders are found in most modern ATV, UTV and motorcycle engines and have advantages over cast iron liners, including better heat transfer, tighter tolerances, and less friction. If you're wondering if your used cylinder can still be ran or is able to be repaired or fixed, this video is for you. In this video, Charles shows how to inspect and clean your nikasil coated cylinder to see if it can be repaired or is damaged bad enough to warrant replacement.

    Good video guys, well done. Can't emphasize enough the importance of clean air into the combustion system, contaminants are what cause most of the cylinder/piston failures, oil leaks into the exhaust, etc. Keep those filters on tight, and keep them clean. I'm just finishing up a top end rebuild due to air filter failure in the first 70 hours of engine operation.

    I honed a stihl Nikasil cylinder with a huge impact , deep socket covered in 3k grit sandpaper buttered up with diamond paste 😂. next time I hone a cylinder tho I’ll do it on the drill press so it’s more “ precise “ . send it !
    Edit : muriatic acid helps get some aluminum off before I hone the cylinder

    Hey RM,i did a top end rebuild have a nikasil coated cylinder..do i need to perform "Enigine Break-In" or are break-ins only for cast iron/retro cylinders?!

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  3 года назад +1

      The break-in process is to help seat the rings to the cylinder wall regardless of cylinder type. So yes, it's a good idea to follow some sort of break-in procedure before riding to the engines full potential.

    Can someone please help me. Is there supposed to be cross hatching on cast iron lining? Or just if it’s nikasel plated? Thank you

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  2 года назад +1

      The crosshatch should be on the cast iron lining as well. -Charels

    Why can you buy cylinders? I hear everyone say just replace it and some parts for my 2000 cr125 are hard to find I don’t even know where I’d look for a cylinder

      Depending on how bad your cylinder is. If its plated or been sleeved. If the plating is just worn or damaged you can send it out to millennium tech to get it re coated

    Should you hone a cylinder every time? I thought you would never want to hone any coating?

      NIkasil is approx 0.003" thick. Non honing is very bad to do as nikasil is microscopic holes and even scrotchbrite pad will fill those holes and it willnot be like new again.

      You are actually supposed to. It's a misconception because all the engine builders say don't hone it but they actually mean don't hone it like you would hone a steel or iron cylinder with a stone hone. Honing with a regular stone hone leaves dirt in the nikasil but an aluminum hone is safe for nikasil. The shops that replate hone with a diamond hone to get the cylinder into spec.

    • @human1513
      @human1513 2 года назад +3

      @@jacobvanhalteren7452 An Alumumin hone is soft and will fill the microscopic porous holes in the nikasil. Not a good idea. Even using a scotchbrite pad is a bad idea. Per motorcycle factory team mechanics and techs.
