HOW I GOT A JOB WORKING ON NETFLIX TV SHOW!

- Опубликовано: 2 сен 2020
- I had to think outside the box to get ahead, and I hope this little video helps you to do the same. I am so grateful for all the opportunities I've been given in the past and I am hopeful to get back onto set very soon. This is the story of how I landed my first job in the television industry in NYC. Getting a job in the tv and film industry is not easy but if you work hard you can do it!
Thank you for your time! :)
This is incredible! Literally walking up to someone, nervous as hell...willing to just ASK even knowing there's a chance of absolute denial. Moral of the story...find the movies filming, find the location, walk up to someone until they point you in the right direction/ to the person in charge... have your elevator pitch ready/know what you want to say... then watch God work! So happy for you! So inspiring!
Dude I must say that takes SO MUCH courage to do. Literally haven’t heard of a story like this it’s usually “oh my friends aunt works here” type of connection.
Me taking notes of how film people look like lol 🤓 constipated 📑✏️ anxious 📑✏️ walkie talkie 📑✏️
haha yes you gotta think outside the box!!
OMG this is the advice that they don't give you in college. This was so inspiring and honestly gives me so much more confidence for when I do graduate and try to get a job.
You got this!! Just don't be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things during your journey. You never know what opportunities will find you! 💕
Heyy I am sahithi living in Phoenix..this video is sooo good that I would like to have your phone number because even I am looking for a job in this film fraternity..in which I am soo soo interested and donno from where to start with..could you please let me know how can I reach you out to share further!!!
This is such a classically NYC story. I lived in NYC in my 20s and did something similar when I got my agent and became a celebrity makeup artist. I moved to L.A. and tried similar tactics and they're not having it. You will be blacklisted and NEVER work if you don't do everything according to "the rules". I was acting and I managed to get into an audition with a casting agent, but I didn't have representation. The casting agent loved me, and then she asked for my agent and I explained I'd not been able to get anyone to even meet me about repping me. She flipped out and told me I had to learn protocol. I was shook. She was literally cheering at my audition, then bitched me out a moment later. She refused to answer my calls after that. L.A. does not prize tenacity and resourcefulness. It's heartbreaking.
Wow, crazy that happens so often! I'm glad I got lucky here in NYC because LA and I would have to throw hands 🤣
@@brittanicunningham 🤣
I want to be director/filmmaker and have been constantly procrastinating year after year. This makes me smile and gives me hope. Thanks for sharing your story. 💪🏽
Thanks for watching :)
me tooo, and off topic but you’re stunning
Hello! I have been researching on how to get into the film industry, and I find the phrase "It's not about what you know, it's who you know" to be extremally valuable. I just graduated high school, and was feeling uneasy about my major because I wasn't sure if I would ever be lucky enough to know anyone in the film industry. Hearing about your experience was so inspiring! I will never give up.
Wishing you all the best! I’m most likely starting on the same journey soon… we’ll see how that goes. But the saying “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is SOO TRUE
When you don't know all the marvel superheroes, "Captain America and all of them..." 😭😭😭 great video
Katt Rosier I tried😭😂
That hurt my heart
So proud of you persistence and perseverance!
thank u!
I been applying since I was 18 with zero experience and NEVER GOT CALLED. So I kept working my normal jobs and it was always in the back of my head "YOU NEED TO GET BACK TO THIS!!!!" So I did. Went on to becoming a videographer / photographer and even now that I'm 33 years old, I still haven't been able to get called back from anyone. Even with a degree. So my conclusion to this journey is... Its not what you know its who you know!!! Still haven't given up!
Have you been able to find any luck?
Tell me u found anything
It can happen! God has been providing for me so much lately in this area of my life and He can do it for you too. Just seek Him and call on His name. 🙏🏻
It's my dream to be able to work on films & TV series especially working with celebrities and creating something incredible! This video gave me motivation thank you!!
Best of luck!
Don't do it for the celebs, do it cause you love it!
This was the best advice I've heard because I'm in the exact situation you were before you got your first PA job and I was feeling so hopeless. I'm in NY too and I will be trying exactly what you said and hope for the best. THANK YOU!!!
You're welcome beautiful 😉💕
You are literally my inspiration. Ive always said when get the chance I will just push myself onto a set and talk to people and you actually did it! Thats amazing.
You can do it too!! x
I’m currently in the same position you were in, I have just graduated in a film/photo degree and can’t seem to find any jobs available. I’m based in London, UK, and so there are usually opportunities but because I don’t have connections, AND the pandemic, I’m having no luck... pray for me
PRAYING FOR U!! The pandemic makes everything a lot trickier for sure but don't get discouraged. Now is the time to take up as much freelance work from home gigs as you can. Good luck!!
Hey!! I’m also based in the UK, except in Birmingham. I graduated in film Production last year, in the pandemic too.😣 I’ve mainly been doing retail jobs to earn some money but I’m really trying to be serious about getting into film, as I know that Tesco is not my forever 😂
how’s everything going for you? Have you found anything yet or have you networked with people since you made this comment?
Maybe we could share knowledge and start networking across the pond, rather than up, since we’re both in similar positions☺️
@@user-xe2pe3op6u heyyy, funnily enough I got a call last Sunday asking if I was available on Monday for a Covid assistant role on a BBC3 drama series! Very last minute but luckily I was unemployed and free 😂. This has been the first role I got from the TV industry… and I got in contact with the guy that called by coming up to a filming crew and asking if I could send my details/CV to him! I guess someone dropped out and they needed to fill the position last min… great for my CV. It’s not my dream job ofc but it’s certainly a good step in the right direction. Would love to keep in touch 👍😄😄
My advice is to email, DM or message every single production company in London, introduce yourself and tell them what you would like from them (asking to volunteer might help), then tell them to please direct you to a person who you can send your resume/cv too for consideration. Most will not respond, some will respond but not take any further action but you will definitely fine at least one that will give you an opportunity. I found my one yes through doing this and I’ve never looked back. The difference might be that I’m in Joburg but the entertainment industry is pretty standard worldwide in terms of approaching work opportunities. You should also be willing to work for small production companies for exposure
Wow this video was so needed! I just graduated like 2 months ago and I'm trying to get into the film/tv industry and I was literally searching these various production houses and whatnot and I couldn't find any. This really helped me cause now I know what to do. It's not about what I know but who I know! Thank you and as a fellow black girl this was truly inspiring!
This is deadass sooo inspiring. I love how determined you were!
you gotta get out there and secure the bag!!😂
This is amazing. Love the raw honesty, now you narrated your journey in order and the solid advice!!
Aww this is so inspiring!! Thank you so much! I’m interested in Journalism/ TV, and I’d love to work on in media someday! Thanks so much!! We love to see another fellow black girl grinding!! Good luck!❤️
Yasss! You got this sis!❤️
This video was amazing Brittani! The industry is def built on networking and it seems like something you slay at. Congrats again !
Yesss!! Good luck queen!!
Wow! Really love your story. I graduated with a BA in media arts but have been struggling for years to get into this industry. Hearing your story is really inspiring and allowed me to continue the hustle.
so glad it could help :)
Congratulations on your persistence! That was a great way off pushing yourself and putting yourself out there.
Thank you so much!! You gotta keep putting yourself out there!!
By far the best information I’ve ever received from RUclips. I’ve everything you said you did, from school all the way up to talking to the Key. Here I was thinking I was wrong.
You're doing amazing, I promise :) good luck!
Just graduated and in the same situation you were in looking for PA jobs. This is so inspiring and gives me hope, thank you!
Probably the best advice I’ll ever here to get into this industry. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for telling your story! 3 Years later and I’m sure you been in so many amazing projects. Hope more opportunities come your way.
your persistence is amazing, even with the rude attitude you encountered from others you kept pushing and landed your job! very inspiring!
I appreciate that!😄
This was such an inspiring video thank you so much! It's so refreshing to hear from somebody who got into the industry with no prior connections.
Where I live there is constantly so many filming locations going on and I always watch from a distance. This is going to help so much and I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know! I just gotta get over my nervousness lol
You got this girl!!😉
Your dedication and hard work is soooo inspiring and amazing!! You have such great advice, thanks for sharing! (Also, the edits and your personality are so great, this video is just so much fun to watch!)
Lana Banahna thank you Lana!! I had fun editing this, than you for noticing❤️
@@brittanicunningham It definitely shows!! ♡
Thanks for sharing so openly, Britt. Also - admire your ingenuity and the thinking outside of the box!
thank you! ❤️
Your journey of searching for a job is so clever and inspiring! I’m in a similar place right now but I’m not sure if i can put myself out there the way you did
What a great story & rad tips. Gotta love a clever entry into the industry!
The most amazing and inspiring story ever. I am planning on going to NYC soon and didn't know where to begin.
Take it one step at a time and DREAM BIG! The sky is the limit Kendall!!
Love hearing this! You're so right! It's connections, it's networking it's all of that! If you want it bad enough... it wants you. 😁👍🎥
This was amazing!! Ugh I love how it all started for you.
Much appreciation💙
Wow, thank you so much for sharing your story! Your story sounds a lot like mine in terms of getting started in the film and television in the South African market and I have since relocated to the Atlanta market finding it a very difficult nut to crack. This helped to give me a boost Due to the fact that things are completely different here than they are back home.
So now that I watched your videos. This makes you my new connection!!! Help I need to get back into the business!
Thank you so much for this video. I plan on sharing it with high school students to get them interested in careers related to tv/film. Your representation matters to them!
Beautiful story! I pray you keep winning 🙏🏾
This was inspiring, thank you so much for the “ugly” bits as well!
This is an amazing sharing! Even though I'm not live in America and still being a student now, but I really want to work on a tv show, because tv shows are my memories with my parents. Hope one day I can do it!
Thank you for sharing this! Really inspiring that you went after your dream job like that 😭Need that courage!
Mariam thank you!! You can do it to, sounds corny but just put yourself out there!
That was brave of you to boldly walk onto a film set. Whenever I see film sets filming I always shy away and don’t bother them although I would be interested in working. I know what I’ll do the next time I see someone filming. I did the traditional route by submitting my resume and my career took off by being hired by the one person who gave me a chance. I’m so grateful for that guy. I’m now a producer for unscripted projects but I want to get into doing scripted projects. How well are you treated as a set PA?
haha thank you! Never considered myself to be brave but I had to in that moment! 😄 For me personally, I believe that you are responsible for how other people treat you when in the work force meaning, I don't take people's shit. Just because you are a PA does not mean your position is any less important than any other crew member (that's the way I go about it)
@@brittanicunningham I absolutely agree with you on being treated fairly no matter what position you have. I’ve always advocated this. Thanks for your response. I was curious of your experience in that regards bc people always say PAs aren’t treated well. I’ve had some good and bad experiences as a PA but mostly good experiences. Keep up the good work and continue to pursue your dreams. 💫 😊
I’m in my first year of college for film production in the UK. My dream is to move to NY when I have my bachelors, I’ll DEFINITELY do this when my time comes, thanks
You can do it!!❤️
This was very inspiring and informative! Thank you for sharing your story!
This was a very informative video. This is actually how I got my first tv job, I just asked around for opportunities and made myself visible
Exactly! Gotta put yourself out there!
This is so inspiring, thanks for sharing your experience! I'm starting the second year of undergrad media studies in Italy and I'm so anxious about internships and jobs opportunities. But I made up my mind and decided to put myself out here and start seriously looking, I will definitely try this method :)
Thank you so much for this motivation! You're an inspiration
I wish you the best ✨thanks for spread THAT vibe. I really needed to listen at this video.
I appreciate that!😄
Gonna start film film school in like a month and this video was really helpful to get some kind of insight on how it can look like at he beginning of your career in the film industry, thank you!!!
I found this advice extremely helpful today! I'm trying to get into the industry and really it just feels like searching google constantly and never getting anything. Going to keep this in mind moving forward and hopefully land somewhere. Thank you for the tips!

Glad it was helpful!
This was hugely inspiring thank you!
This is such great advice, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing your story. Yes, it truly is all about who you know. I've been searching Indeed as well as company websites I'd like to work for and have submitted my resume many many times and have been unsuccessful. It is discouraging - very discouraging. I have connected with a few seasoned people in the business who I felt could have referred me to a position within their company - even just to get my foot in the door - again unsuccessful. I guess I'll have to continue to remain optimistic and network with hopes that I will get the job and career I'm seeking. Thanks again for sharing your story which encouraged and inspired me.
I know what you mean. Im in the same boat but I’m refusing to give up. I’ve been job searching for about 5 years and haven’t had any luck so far, but I’ve been volunteering in anything I can and have had passion projects filmed
Wow I really love the courage 👏 im so happy you went for it and got what you wanted ❤

OH MY GOD I WATCH VIDEOS LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME BUT THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT'S NOT LIKE "When you work on a set you will make connections. 🙃" the fact that you actually have a backstory is so refreshing thank you so much
LOL I hate when people say that too🤣 but ngl there is some truth to it. Networking will do major things for you! Good luck!!
Know no one has ever told me this info before and thanks a lot by the WAY! Will take this advice!
Thank you for sharing it for aspiring filmmakers like me that is desperate to get into the industry but with no luck. I may be able to try it sometime but I live in an area where there isn't any major entertainment stuff going on. I am worried I won't get a chance at all.
