- For years Iv'e said this, you never see an empty one, so I then wondered how many you would have to put in a caravan to actually have an effect, turns out, it would be a lot..

Total sense. Dont lock it up and forget it. Just caravan all year round and enjoy the unit.. use it and look after it and you'll be grand as ...
Hooray someone talking sense.
I’ll show my wife that!
My thoughts exactly, in fact storing open water containers (which is what they are) inside the caravan, evaporating more moisture into the air will make it worse
Good common logical sense. Thank you for the insight & advice.
Thanks..
Completely agree with you about these silly humidifiers. Why not put them on the roof and stop the moisture getting in in the first place?
My top tip for a dry caravan is to keep camping. We go out every month through all the seasons which means the van gets thoroughly warmed through. TBF while a dry van is a plus it's as much to do with getting my money's worth from my £30K, but some of our best stays away have been when the snow's down.
I also have a strong view about caravan covers but I'll wait for your video on those 🤣🤣
Yes, I’ll do one on covers next year think, I have mixed feelings on them.
Thanks for another good vlog.....Another one for the agreement camp here regarding non use of the crystals .... I stopped using them a few ago, as a humidity gauge showed no change with or without crystals ......but as I have the luxury of keeping my caravan at home with 240v hook up, I now run a small dehumidifier with a pipe running off the moisture outside and monitor with the same cheap Bluetooth humidity gauge and this has been very successful...also lockers open cushions in the house and all good ...
Thanks for this, I’ve had a few people say they do this and it actually works.. I can feel another re boot coming on…
We used to place 2x2gal buckets each 1/2 full of salt. I was convinced that they worked well in keeping the van dry. We also moved the cushions so they had plenty of air circulation.
Were they both full? If so, you’d need to put an extra one in each year to find the point where they weren’t full, this would prove if it was working or not..
Great vlogs, please keep them coming.
Will do, I’ve opened the can of worms now haven’t I..
Yes hopeless, and for ref. we had a house mains demidifier left over from the last house so we stuck in our swift 580se, ( in good nick) and it produced 4 pints a week !!!
From a scientific point of view I think you're absolutely right! I've long considered these a waste of time and I wouldn't even bother.
Yes, but there’s a lot of people on Facebook that won’t have it!
I worked for a well known company that had hundreds of thousands of kerbside ventilated equipment cabinets countrywide for over 35 years, they insisted we replaced what were called desiccant packs every visit (almost daily in some cases),they gave no benefit whatsoever and were constantly damp. Eventually it was decided that they just attracted moisture and this practice was ceased, resulting in a significant cost saving .My experience would suggest don’t bother.
The material inside these are hydroscopic no matter where you put them in a caravan theyll just drag moisture in from any air thats moving about, inlcuidng air pulled in via vents, they will also contribute the adding mositure to the environment. Persoanlly they are likey useful in areas where you store stuff, such as a cabinet etc. But dont think they have any practical application outside of that,
But how cosy would you feel if you had 100 of these in your camper !!!!😊
I’ve always said this! 👍🏼
Use salt in some bowls works In static mobile homes
Unfortunately, I expect it doesn’t for the same reasons..
I did think that maybe they attract the damp? My local caravan dealer said if you cover the caravan and if you have damp it will hold the damp in the caravan. This year I am thinking of no moisture blocks take carpets home and cushion. I will visit often to see how it goes in storage.
Yep, it more to do with location than anything else.. and a bit of luck by the sounds of it, some vans suffer from it and some don’t.
100% agree.
😋😋😋😋😋
If you think this works you can also! > On a hot day, at home, leave your fridge and freezer open all day to act as air conditioning!
😋😋😋😋😋
That’s a great idea..
We full-time in a motorhome n we have eight containers at any one time plus a dehumidifier. Change the units need changing every month or before.
Yes, with you being in it I would imagine they would need replacing often, we breathe out a lot of water..
Spot on.
Won’t convince everyone..
Used to cover my Subaru impreza over winter and put one of the unibond aero traps in the footwell. Without it it was mouldy within 3 weeks, with one in place no mould. Another non sealed environment. So will continue to put a couple in the caravan. But i wont use those crystal things as they are gone in about 2 weeks the aeros last a lt least a month.
I don’t know what they are, I’ll have a look.
100% you would have to seal all the caravan holes to make any difference and even then. The best I had was a dehumidifier for a boat and I taped up all the holes and that worked but the best thing is take your bedding home etc
I’m glad it’s not just me..
Those that say they work, do they reckon they are 'safe & effective'........?
Thanks for this. I totally agree! Regarding keeping the van ventilated throughout winter; one side of my caravan is 6inches or so from a wall. Is it ok/advised to leave the windows on that side open on the first latch throughout winter?
Yes, wouldn’t hunt, just keep an eye on it, or if you can plug it in, keep the heating on low..
Completely agree. I did it one winter on the advice of a friend and the van was literally running with water inside with all the trays overfilled. The fridge was wet and the control panel stopped working. Haven’t done it again for 5 years and the van remains bone dry over winter.
Good interesting video, I do prefer your shorter length videos . 👍
Good to know, technically it is better to do more short videos, I should do that really.
New sub here and new caravaner too of about 3 days! Taking van back into storage - would you recommend putting van on a slight tilt to allow rain to run off?
Yes definitely, it changes of getting the van dead level is fairly slim normally in storage, but is best to tilt it backwards if anything.
I disagree, I've used these since i've had my caravan. I spread 5 throughout my caravan, and have found that the ones in certain areas get more full than others. Ive never had any damp problems with my caravan. Also, your test was hardly a 'scientific test'.
And I expect if you didn’t put any in at all, you’d still get no damp.. we don’t put any in our stock caravans and there aren’t many places as warm and damp as Cornwall.. but ha ho..
The most scientific way of measuring whether they work or not is to measure the humidity of the air both outside and inside the caravan/motorhome and record the difference (if any) between the two readings. Then put your moisture trap(s) or dehumidifier in and then check the same two readings every day or two until your trap/dehumidifier is full. If the difference between the outside and inside readings does not change over time then that is proof that they make no difference whatsoever.
I mean, I could do that, and you’re right.. but the consensus is that they don’t work anyway by the looks of the comments.
@@atlanticcaravansUK I totally agree with you and have been saying it for years but some people need a little bit more convincing 😁
MOULD IN BATHROOM = NOT ENOUGH VENTILATION
would you see any need other than draining all the water out to winterise, such as moving the seat cushions or would you leave everything in place, I am just waiting for the comments from the ones who did not understand the common sense behind your experiment
Yes, take the battery out and charge every month if you can’t plug the van in..
but where would the water go if not into the tubs?
Ha, out the same way it came in I reckon..
Agree with you, totally pointless. But here’s the question, do you sell them in your shop? It makes me laugh when working around caravan accessory shops the amount of rubbish we apparently need, like drain down kits another totally pointless accessory!
I do actually, I keep telling people they don’t do anything, but they won’t believe me, so I take the money..
@@atlanticcaravansUK A bit hypocritical don't you think? Can you give us a full list of other things you sell that you consider useless? Just so we know...
@@tonymurphy8774 I tell people they’re a waste of money but they don’t believe me, so I sell them, if they won’t take my advice what do I do?
Impossible for them to do anything as there are open vents all over a caravan. Complete waste of money
Yep, you won’t convince some though..
You are absolutely correct. My caravan is in the garage and I have a dehumidifier in the garage which is on from June to the middle~end of October. I have to throw the water three times daily to maintain a humidity level of 60% or less. The dehumidifier is not in the caravan, but the caravan humidity levels equilibrate to that of the garage. The dehumidifier has a water tank of 5 litres and is full every 6 hours. I obviously avoid opening the main garage door (it can be accessed from inside the house) . There is another humidifier in the house too on the 1st floor as well as the air conditioning running both upstairs and down with all built-in storage doors open throughout the summer months.
Fortunately, the winter months and up and until the end of May are comparatively dry with the winter months being so dray that a humidifier is necessary but not in the garage of course. The downside to the dehumidifier is that gives off heat and this summer, the temperatures in the garage and caravan were close on 40C on many days as we had a particularly hot summer, which meant I had to open the garage door to release heat in the evening times when the temperature dropped to about 31C to keep the temperature from becoming unnecessarily excessive. The dehumidifier quickly brings down the humidity however. Those damp crystals would not do the job. However, they are useful in putting into wardrobes and other cupboards in the house where an air conditioner is also running consecutively. An air conditioner also removes humidity as it cools of course. (Location is the Kanto Plain, Japan). Please note that those that live in snow country in Japan have to contend with humidity during the winter months too.
Wow, comment of the week goes to you, that’s cracking. And I’d also add, quite dedicated!
Hi, I have never used these dehumidifiers in any of our vans and have never had a problem. But as our caravans are stored at home with a flow of air around them that may of been helpful as you say. I have always lifted the cushions as I put some items on the seats not the cushions so as to keep the floor clear.
Spot on, proof it works..
