They speak of the soul's experience, the profundity multi-dimensional expanse and miraculous texture of the human experience, love, desire, learning, feeling, joy, sadness, pleasure, pain and sorrow and loss. "While we may" acknowledges that our time here is finite. He uses the words "may" and "if" in Be, with the subtle knowing that life's experiences are different for each, AND we share "universal" commonalities as mortal beings. All this regularly touches me when I hear these masterpieces and my soul swells and cries in some sort of tender empathy for myself and the world; for any and all who might be similarly moved and understand and have compassion for others. And Neil Diamond does it with a brevity I don't have, but with a profound and resonant voice that reaches deeply and touches my SOUL.💞
My father gave me this book to read when I was about 9 years old. At the time, I just thought it was a cute book about a "talking" seagull. I've since re-read it about 100 times and I get something different from it every time. The author, Richard Bach, was a pilot....and several years after my dad passed away, I studied and flew to become a pilot myself! I walked myself down the aisle to my own wedding to this song, in honour of my dad. Ironically, my husband dumped me for another lady pilot. Stiff shit. This song means the world to me. To forge the genius of Jonathan Livingstone and Neil Diamond together after the book was released was something of a unique blessing. Both are perfectly suited. Jonathan would have approved. I do not know why these pieces are not greater known, or talked about, they are less commercial but by far his best, and some of the the most profound pieces of music ever written. Let's just call us the lucky ones.
