I FINALLY FOUND IT!!! The name of this game has been in the back of my mind for over 20+ years & ive been searching forever for this!! One of the best game on the NES 🏆
I remember playing this game thinking "This game is weird". But i got so addicted! It's such an amazing game. The fighter jet segments are what did it for me.
One of the most Underrated games ever! I still love this game even now! Never beaten it, cause it was so hard! I may go back to this just to play it again and finally beat it!
This game is very hard. I remember it sat in a drawer for ever. I played it once and gave up. I got board and decided to give it another try. Played it for a month straight convinced I could beat it. I remember being frustrated and back in the drawer it went. I never did beat it. Tough but very entertaining.
This is my favorite NES game of all time. My family got mad because I rewired everything behind our TV so I could use our VCR to record me winning it. I still have the VHS from 1990.
this is in my top 10 NES games ever, the story was good, the shooter levels and land were awesome. the bosses were scary at times. this should've been on the NES Classic, or an update. Great game
I was looking for this game for so long as I was playing it in my childhood. I couldn't remind it's name but it appeared in my dreams. I feel much better right now.
This game is highly underrated and was actually a long playing game for its time. The password sequence was insane. I remember writing down all the passwords for the different levels.
lol same been driven me nut fora few months :D mmiss this game was tough as nails later in the game too! ah the times of not turning off the console for weeks lol!
man so glad i found this, been driven my crazy fora few months now, and finale member and found it, ah this game and the months of not turning off my console!
Guardian Legend for the NES somehow combined games like Meteroid, Contra, Blaster Master, Salamander (aka Life Force,) Gradius 1, 2, and 3, and Raiden all combined by itself in one huge game. I like Guardian Legend for the NES because it's cool, and the game is inspired by Gradius 1, 2, and 3, and Life Force.
This game was a huge part of my childhood. I could never get any of my friends to get into this one but I loved everything about it. The genre mashup, the bangin' music soundtrack and just the style overall.
I have looked for this game for so long. I never played it, but I read about it in a nintendo magazine long lost and i allways wanted to play it. It looked so cool. Thanks!
Compile really made some of the best shooters back in the day - this certainly is one of them (although it's also a Zeldaesque action adventure game). This video made me want to replay it. :)
This was a co-op between Compile, Broderbund Software (MSX port) and the Nintendo portion was the IREM corporation. Compile games have made appearances in other games (Zillion/Zillion 2, Aleste, Golvellius for the Sega Master System and MSX2, etc). The animation portion for the cutscenes were made by GAINAX (Alicia Dragoon) or Tatsunoko Productions, hence the brainchild of Megaman X4 and the OVA for Casshan: Robot Hunter.
Ah childhood memories Love The Guardian Legend . To me it will always be number one on my list . Of the top 10 NES game's if anyone asked me . What is you're favorite NES game . I usually reply saying The Guardian Legend .
This game was one of my favorite in the childhood. And the most delicious part of playing this game was japanese version and trying to write these fancy hieroglyphs in the copybook.)
There's likely not a cheat code or anything like that, but I'm fascinated by some of the interactions -- as though certain data values involving being hit were altered, which likely wouldn't be the actions of anyone playing, but alter the game play greatly from what I remember about it. That is, those large mini-bosses that walk and shoot bubbles seem to decimate your health while certain beams (like the seaweed beam) don't seem to hurt you as much as expected based on other attacks. I'm curious as to whether that's the original game, or slightly altered coding as one who's beaten the game more than a few times on the original cartridge and even with an audience several times. What are you playing on -- console or computer? In any case it's a fun game, eh? This game is a favorite of mine and I first played it as a kid in the US on console and then well into college without cheats, etc and it's a favorite because of any number of things -- from the music to the game play. I hope you enjoyed it!
Did you know that we use the original versions (and some altered versions) of games to test certain aspects of cognition and choose people for certain things? Anything from hand-eye reflex, to thinking. There's no real way of gumming up that system, and it's generally a lot of fun for both the kids and for us! It's nothing new and we're good at determining how/when things are made more difficult or easier (not claiming that you did anything like that).
Such an underrated and really good game! Never got very far in it though. Maybe I can if I try again nowadays. FYI:The music for this game was done by the same guys who did the music for the first Godzilla game on NES which was also by Compile.
Would love to see my favorite childhood game remade/remastered (whatever have you), with a bit more in-depth coverage about what you are and who or what are all these bosses (and sub-bosses) you're fighting. Introducing more upgrades, while keeping the classic fun factor in tact.
The Guardian Legend was released for the NES in North America by Broderbund in April 1989; it was published in Europe by Nintendo in 1990. Nintendo Power previewed The Guardian Legend in January 1989, where they discussed the game's mechanics, graphics, and shoot 'em up sequences. They promised a full review in the following issue, but it was postponed due to a delay of the game's release in April of that year. The Guardian Legend was exhibited at the 1989 Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada before its release; it was one of the prime attractions at the Broderbund booth along with the U-Force controller. In 1990, remaining inventory of The Guardian Legend was among the assets Broderbund sold to THQ along with the rest of its New Ventures Division after Broderbund went bankrupt. That Canadian trademark was renewed after people assumed the original THQ had bought The Guardian Legend rights.
Not going to lie. I was going through some boxes in my garage and came across this gem and my NES. After looking at you play this game and making it look so easy, I got mad at how frustrated I used to get playing this as a child. Thanks!!
I wish they would put this game on the Switch’s NES game pack already. This game is literally in the Top 5 best games on the NES EVER!! So much fun and made you think and solve riddles to enter the corridors. The music is great and the gameplay is as well. I could go on forever. For the love of god Nintendo, take your head out of your ass and put this game on the Switch’s NES emulator and make a multitude of people happy already
There's a lot of fan made games, some bad, some decent.. no one seems to grasp what makes this game what it is. It's an 80s title that's a space scifi. 80s scifi film and music we're unique, chap full of high pitch sounds and strange instrumentation. Not just chip tunes sounding like most generic NES games. Heck you could even call this an orchestration of sorts, very unique indeed. Should there be a true sequel, I would hope for a 3rd person shooter + a SEGA Arcade type flight shooter. No polygons, just a unique set of hand painted graphics to fit the mood.
BEST GAME EVER!!! Spent endless nights with my siblings to beat this, it was a rather difficult game compared to others… my youngest sibling finally defeated Evil Critter… he was 6 at the time, incredible…. the game was his, he got it for his birthday together with Super Mario Bros and our mum bought it, not knowing what kind of game it was, she just thought it looked nice since my bro liked aliens and space … lol… if only she knew! We all had nightmares from the creatures…
Instant thumb up. I hate the game a bit, could never beat it as child, also i didn't understand it cause it is only in english. But now, i understand what the balls are saying and the music is still awesome and it is a BIG childhood memory. Thx for this longplay.
I remember watching my brother play, and beat, this game, and watching the ending and seeing the Guardian as a small blip across the screen and saying to my brother "She won...doesn't she get to go home?" and he was like "Maybe, but maybe she needs to keep protecting things." I felt so bad, mainly cause I was kept telling myself she didn't get to go home cause she had to keep being a Guardian, even after all she went thought, and young me didn't think that was fair.
No word of a lie I beat this game in less than 24 hours back in the day. I rented it, stayed up all night, didn't sleep a wink and completed it about 5 minutes before I had to return it at noon.
So do all the Compile games use the same “extra life” jingle? Also, Star Prince on Retro Game Challenge was evidently inspired by this game’s “sch’mup” segments.
Since watching a full playthrough of a Zelda Classic game called "Zodiac: Story of the Guardian" by C-Dawg (possibly my most favorite ZC quest EVER), I HAD to check out a gameplay video of the game that inspired his fangame! ...And yup, he's was definitely a huge fan of TGL! Even the way he implemented the mechanics were reflected there too!
Looks like this was released before blaster master. I had no idea Blaster master ripped a game off so bad haha. That overhead view part was clearly used by sunsoft. I'll be danged.
Imagine being taunted by a half-forgotten memory of a game you heard about as a child, something you were interested in but never bought or even had the console for. Imagine being intrigued by the gameplay of a character who transformed from jet to person to fight on two different levels of combat. Imagine picking up Blaster Master and knowing that that wasn't it, and playing Zanac and being *so close* yet so far away, never realizing that they were the ones who made this game. Finally, years later, it is brought to life before you on the internet, and everything comes flooding on back.
круто! я вдетстве не мог пройти. уже будучи взрослым решил пройти на эмуляторе и не смог. даже с сохранением в любом месте! игра очень сложная. этот геймер просто мастер!
In an alternate universe, this game received all the praise, sequels, and popularity that Zelda received.
This game is the most underrated game of the console, period. NO. CONTEST.
It is the most underrated one. I have also discovered that!
Olivier Cadieux 110% agree!
This, Robowarrior, River City Ransom and Rescue: the Embassy Mission
More than just that its one of the best games ever made period.
Mister Tago Mago lol
I FINALLY FOUND IT!!! The name of this game has been in the back of my mind for over 20+ years & ive been searching forever for this!! One of the best game on the NES 🏆
You can’t even understand how I do feel your pain :) it’s been ages
Seriously same here!!!!
uh...you meant Guardian Legend? Like every corner store and 80's video rental place had a copy? That took you 20 YEARS to recall?? LOL!
Same here this game creeped me out when i was younger lol
same :D
It's like Blaster Master and Life Force had a child.
The guardian legend is north american release April 1989. After Megaman and 1942,and Zelda down.
Came out in 88 and I finally beat it in 97 lol. Took me 7 to 8 hours straight the first time I beat the game. The hardest boss was grimgrin
This game is very hard. I remember it sat in a drawer for ever. I played it once and gave up. I got board and decided to give it another try. Played it for a month straight convinced I could beat it. I remember being frustrated and back in the drawer it went. I never did beat it. Tough but very entertaining.
Still have this game and I’m in my early 40s. Most favorite Nintendo Game of all time. The otherworld music is so nostalgic to me.
Just discovered this game that I have never heard of before. Soundtrack is very underrated indeed. Buying this today.
Good memories.the music is still in my ears untill today
One of the best obscure NES games finally gets a longplay! :D
Whoever beat this game knows what TGL means
This is my favorite NES game of all time. My family got mad because I rewired everything behind our TV so I could use our VCR to record me winning it. I still have the VHS from 1990.
@@ro0ter88 I thought I was the only one who captured VHS footage of my games back then
Password: TGL
Fly Missions only :-)
this is in my top 10 NES games ever, the story was good, the shooter levels and land were awesome. the bosses were scary at times. this should've been on the NES Classic, or an update. Great game
I agree with you.
Definitely should have been on the classic. This game needs more recognition.
I would just play the game with the “TGL” password and do the shooter straight through occasionally. Still awesome
The dual approach of this game was what made it so awesome. But yes, it's definitely a classic of the "golden age" of the NES
I still do a yearly playthrough of this old gem - least I try once a year, i'm overdue for another go
I was looking for this game for so long as I was playing it in my childhood. I couldn't remind it's name but it appeared in my dreams. I feel much better right now.
One of the best NES games ever. I was soooo proud when I finally beat it as a child!
Game is a classic.
This game is highly underrated and was actually a long playing game for its time. The password sequence was insane. I remember writing down all the passwords for the different levels.
wow.. I had this game as a kid, and have been trying for months to figure out what it was called.. This game is still pretty badass..
Me too until today.

Sigma Star Saga on the GBA is like combination shmup and rpg. Check it out
Love this game. Some of the best action you'll see on the NES.
Wish a remastered version would come to Switch.
Guardian Legend for the NES somehow combined games like Meteroid, Contra, Blaster Master, Salamander (aka Life Force,) Gradius 1, 2, and 3, and Raiden all combined by itself in one huge game. Words cannot express my deepest love for this game.
This masterpiece screams a proper remake.
This game was a huge part of my childhood. I could never get any of my friends to get into this one but I loved everything about it. The genre mashup, the bangin' music soundtrack and just the style overall.
One of my 5 favorite nes games. I do like the zelda games on nes, but I honestly prefer The Guardian Legend.
I loved the music in this game as a kid. It always got stuck in my head.

this game was always my favorite, but I feel kinda cheap since i could only play with the game genie. Dang it was hard... but so good!
I love the music of The Guardiand Legend!
I'll never forget how much the cover scared me as a little kid.

I had never seen this before, but it seems great!
This game, The Battle of Olympus and Mega Man 2 were games I played so frigging much. The feels hit me hard when I remember those times :)

this game is longer that the new all of duty....geez, but also is better, great video
One of the best Nintendo games without the cheesyness of it being in that time. It is the best. Love the Board music themes. 🎉❤ Guardian Legend
The part at the end (post-credit) must be a gauntlet battle of sorts
One of my favourite games as a kid.
I thought this was only an overhead flying shooting game. I got this on emulator and I looked at this video and said this can't be right. LOL
1:18:30 What an epic pins and needles, edge of your seat battle!!! Wow! Yeah he's tough!
Damn, I remember trying this way back as a kid and finding that first sequence with the ship too hard to focus on an dropped it.

The first Zelda looks different than i remember...

This game is so fun and definitely hard and oh I just love the background music what a classic.
Been waiting forever for it to drop on vc or a continuation... a blending of ideas that shouldn't have worked as well as they did
Thank you for reminding me of this game!
That ending was weird. You started going off the map into strange glitchy rooms until you ended at a room with nothing but 4 walls :)
I want this game so much now.... 😭
I love this game. Playing it now. Im stuck :(
I want to replay it 2 😭

Play all the Scrolling stages and skip to the end with code TGL. That's it. (The code TGL stands for The Guardian Legend).
classic game

that last password tho.
