Thank you for this! I always wanted to see a Lego train system on a classic miniature terrain and figurine layout. That foam is sick broken by hand. Get yourself some rasps if you work with foam a bunch. Make a mess but they're handy
I was gonna do a more aged and worn granite mountain with rasps, but the broken effect was better at desert butte than my rasping was at granite mountain so we got this! Thanks for this comment! I loved the mixed media approach. And a dessert Christmas look was a nice variation on typical snow conditions- especially for us Aussies and our summer Christmas!
Any chance of some follow ups incorporating different terrain types? Would love your take on creating urban, water, ice, or space conditions - especially given lego’s themed kits.
Thank you for all those ideas and for your encouragement. We have a lot planned and more modeling techniques and scenic techniques are definitely in there. The world of design is as big as our ability to be fascinated with it, and so we have cars and appliances and historical perspectives and and spaceships and books and toys and art to get into.... If we made a video a day it could take some time before we get back around to something real similar to this, so I beg your patience. Next year tho I think there could be more in store for this layout. Maybe even snow 😂... I know you said thanks for holding off on the snow... Thank you for the perspective from the southern hemisphere , I'm glad it's working for you as long as "the weather holds".

Amazing what a LEGO "toy" train will do compared to mainstream railways ! running quality is amazing compared to "Hornby type " which is so sensitive to track . I love the RUclipsr who has built around his house , out into the garden , over the swimming pool etc .....................made myself feel sick , watching from the cab mounted camera !!! Your rocky Butes look wonderful . Wales UK.
Love to see the old tracks being used! Those old metal rail ones are way better than the new plastic ones.
You can do a few interesting things with an inert track like double it back on itself, but for me the trains for plastic track represent the deal breaker. The battery powered trains are so weak; they probably could not pull this grade. With the old track as my foundation, I can make a longer heavier trains with this grade, even to the point where I have to use neodymium magnets to hold the rolling stock's couplers together, and then with a bench-top power supply, give it more power than you can get from the new battery and motor. Good times.

Thanks. It was a real process of discovery, I had ideas and experience with how to get it here, but obstacles came up, and in someways it happened with fewer steps than I thought would be required. You'd be shocked at how far some broken foam with one paint color and one wash will take you. You can keep going but that could easily be enough to accomplish a project.

lego really needs to bring out some trains, and accessory for them. Lego misses a lot of consumers by that.
There is no limit to my appetite for more train stuff from lego, but they usually have one freight and one passenger train product out at any given time. They can be harder to find at retail though! They will also have some outlying products that integrate with the train system, things that come and go like a Harry Potter train or a Lone Ranger train or a holiday train... Just a little helpful tip. As a mode railroader I don't recommend putting a turnout on any grade steeper than 1%
Thanks Rad-I-Nation! This is the smallest Lego loop-over-loop that can be made from the standard parts and there is no inch of it that is not at the steepest grade the train will make to get high enough to get over itself. Kinda the nature of getting it all tidily under the Christmas tree... Luckily, the turn out is pretty much a decoration, just enough room for an abandoned piece of rolling stock or a snow plow or something. Thanks for this comment! I was once prop mastering a commercial shoot on location in someones home and when I told the homeowner how great I thought his collectible Astro Boy was, he said he didn't want his young children to damage it and gifted it to me! One of my cherished treasures. I'd love to know what the east meets west icons of friendly, family, robots are talking about back there...

@@HohmanDesign I build LEGO Star Wars and other Technic models. It was interesting to learn how the mountains were built and painted and the way you painted the railway roadbed, that looked awesome. Also, the way you took apart the tea-light and modified it, why didn't i ever think of that? 🤦♂️
