  • Multi-piece monuments are stacked stone pieces of different types and sizes placed together. They quite often rely on level ground and gravity to keep them standing and in place. Often they have metal pins, mortar, or some type of seal between their layers, but not always.
These series of videos were produced for the 2021 Local History & Historical Preservation Conference. The Wisconsin Historical Society partnered with monument conservator Jonathan Appell to cover the basics of cemetery preservation. Through a partnership with the Osceola Historical Society and the Mount Hope Cemetery Association, Jonathan demonstrates and performs treatments for the most common gravestone and monument preservation dilemmas, including cleaning, resetting tilted stones, and rejoining fractured tablet stones. The goal of these videos will be to give local cemetery staff or volunteers the knowledge to perform basic preservation procedures.
The workshop and these videos were produced by Valley Access Channels in Stillwater, Minnesota. Music credit: Storyblocks.com

Jonathan Appell is the best! His workshops are amazing, full of information and he makes it so people can do this long after he's left to another workshop. Thank you for posting!

It's nice to see a monument straightened and repaired. So many of them are a mess.

I was think when I saw those elder folk had nothing good to do since they were sitting there watching him fix the stone, but, then, realized I'm sitting in my kitchen watching him fix it also.

Thankyou so much this video has been really helpful ..i.bought a headstone online a nice one slant 24 by 16 by10 and a 36 inch base fory.husband ..it way.cheaper buying online..we have to set it.
I have watched countless videos ..and ordering supplies..i just ordered the tape and plately putty for the structure
Think i have to buy join-tight setting compound for the outside
    Will need a. level
.crowbar ..with a cloth..1/2 inch wood blocks ..a dolly for moving..and 3 more people to help..and a measuring tape
.his stone and base sit on a skid still in packaging in the driveway..someone I know with a fork lift said they would do me the favor and load it on the truck to be taken to the cemetary
.also.will need something to to get it off the truck..ramp or something ..the cemetary owner said she would lend us her dolly..hope we do it right..his foundation is already

You might take into consideration using some of the Wood pieces You have in the Bucket to shim the stone to the level You want than pack the stone & sand material under the base to complete coverage under the base instead of just kind of pushing the fill with the blade of the shovel only around the edges and slightly under the base. pack the filling with a blunt ended tool for long term success.

Luulen, että se johtuu turvallisuussyistä. Kun pohja alkaa vajota maahan, yläosa kallistuu ja se voi lopulta kaatua jonkun päälle.

I hate getting a piece of furniture in that someone "fixed" before. Surpirses are no longer all that surprising, but still every bit as aggravating.

why didnt you tamp that sand and gravel down with a tamp? and or use concrete with rebar to support? and not pinning that monument it will fail again down the road that little epoxy isnt going to last for to long..

It's called a "demonstration". You have to talk if you're teaching other people how to do something; otherwise how are they going to know what , how and why you are doing it.
Didnt you notice the people in lawn chairs sitting in the background? He's talking to them as well as to the camera audience.
