    Don't feel too bad. I once had a 12 string guitar that I had tuned to tightly and it bowed the neck. I tried to get it repaired, but the man said that the guitar was ruined and would only make a good plant bowl. :-(

    Some people commented on the bridge price the luthier asked, arguing that it's very expensive.
    Actually, no, it really is not.
    I'm a professional luthier too, it's not the cost of the bridge piece but the workmanship. Prices may vary depending on the location luthier lives and cost of living. A pro grade violin bridge itself costs about 30-40 euros and there are cheaper options available too. But a bridge blank comes in unusable raw form. It needs to be worked on quite methodically to be ready. First it's fitted absolute exactness to the curvature of the belly, which is one of the most delicate steps in violin making. We literally take onionskin shavings from the feet, without any haste, gradually shaping them to exact curvature. Otherwise the instrument will never sound good. This alone takes most of the fitting time.
    Then the bridge needs to be lowered for the right action, thinned and carved in a lot of places for weight reduction and better sound. All of them are specificialy designated areas regarding the violin, player and the bridges wood characteristics. There are a lot of places on the bridge need to be adjusted and carved to specific sizes and shapes. No random shaping. When shaving, carving and filing we work in the sensivity of the tenth of milimetres. Let's say, if a section needs to be 16mm, it has to be 16mm, it cannot be 16,1mm or 15,9mm. So it's not just buying a blank and putting on the instrument as it is. And you cannot switch instruments' bridges amongst themselves since every bridge is fitted for that individual instrument.
    Depending on the luthier it may take a few hours to half a day for preparing a violin bridge. Being a luthier is not easy, you get college education on music and instrument playing, technical drawing, woodworking, acoustic physics, chemistry, foreign language, etc for four years, and even do master's degree like me. Instrument making tools are very expensive. Making a violin takes months. Heavy repairs and restorations take weeks. So think of us as instrument doctors, not common wood workers. In the end you are paying for our time and expertise. I hope this gives a little insight about the subject.

    • @theoverunderthinker
      @theoverunderthinker 4 года назад

      It can be, but getting new pegs can be expensive , and you can spend more than that on a set of strings, but I agree, it looks like it can be cheaper. I do know that you can get the bridge blanks pretty cheap; what you are actually paying for is the talent of the guy fitting it to your violin. :)

This may seem like a silly question, but it seems like everybody in Norway speaks perfect English. Did you and the guitar tech guy start out talking in English, or did you both switch to English for this video?

      Pamela Suarez Hi Pamela, I'm glad your bridge only fell down :) A bridge that falls down is easily righted, a bridge that you physically change by making the grooves deeper is ruined unless you know what you are doing. There's a reason a new bridge is rather costly! Happy playing!
