As someone who performs magic I have worked alot recently with invisible thread. It is attached to his ear which is why when using his hands he makes a few grabs for it, could be deliberate as a clever misdirection. When he does the no hand stuff you can see he moves his head in the direction the mug rolls, as I said the thread is anchored to his ear. I could recreate this effect live with a few mins practice.

I used to use a similar trick in grade school with a paper cup. I learned to gently blow on the cup in such a way that it would move slowly across a table without anyone seeing that I actually was blowing it. I'm out of practice now, but when I was a kid, I could actually turn the cup somewhat and make it go towards different people at the lunch table in school. A lot of fun then, though obvious once anyone in the group figured it out.

You want a total mindfreak, just imagine when this DOESN'T happen! Had an (unknown at the time) hemorrhage in my spinal column years ago. The pain was so bad I had my wife take me to the emergency room. Thought I was maybe passing a huge kidney stone or something, and so did the ER folks. They kept dumping more pain meds in me, but it wasn't helping. After a couple hours, I went to hug my knees (as I had been doing whenever the pain got really bad), and only 1 leg came up! The other one just stayed flat on the table! At the time, I was so drugged up on pain meds I just remember looking at the leg and thinking "huh? That's a bit odd!".
Anyways, within half an hour or so I was completely paralyzed from the waste down. Luckily, the hospital responded quickly, got me in the MRI machine, and had a spinal surgeon cutting me open before the sun rose the next day. Glad to say I made a complete recovery, although I did have to go thru a couple months of therapy to learn to walk, etc., again.
Sorry for the long story! It's just your comment made me think of how weird it was when your muscles DON'T respond to your brain! ;)

As a magician, “Invisible Thread” was one of the methods I immediately assumed he was employing. “Invisible Thread” is extremely thin, yet strong, nylon thread that magicians use to move and levitate items. It’s very difficult to see, (particularly against a dark/black background…oh, say like a black t-shirt). He could have the thread anchored in a few places that would facilitate what we are seeing with minimal movement on his part.
And SciManDan has a good point about the cuts in the video. He could be setting it up to move due to how the cups are set/balanced; and/or he could also require the cuts to setup the thread.
He’s also counting on the viewers making an assumption that he’s alone. We don’t see off camera on either side of the table. We don’t see under the table. We don’t hear anything, as the sounds that would’ve been audible during his “experiments” has been removed and all we hear is his narration.
This is a magic trick. It’s not even clever. Easily reproduced, and even more convincingly done with just a simple order from a magic shop by someone who knows what to purchase.

  • @dunweldin8084
    @dunweldin8084 2 года назад +122

The table has a bit of cushioning where he places the teacup. You can see the rim of the cup sink into it a bit but there is no cushioning under the rocks that are already on the table. This makes it easier to balance the cup at an angle and turn over slowly using invisible thread.

    • @hartmutholzgraefe

To me the tea cup and coffee mug parts seem to have two tables with a gap between them, the one in the front placed a bit higher so that the fabric pattern and the from behind lighting hide the gap. The bottom part of the cup rims being hidden already sort of gives it away, and the shadows of his fingers at e.g. 9:20 even more so.
No such gap visible with the initial foam cup sequence though, so there it might indeed have been simple electrostatics.

One idea could be bumping the table from below to make the already instable cup roll over completely.
Then you could heighten the front of the cloth with cardboard underneath, the dent can be hidden by the lighting, and then in the area of the cup you have another cardboard strip, thinnner, with a cutout where the cup sinks in, and when you pull the cardboard under the cloth sideways it is nudged a litte on one side and loses support on the other - roll.
We do not see the underside or the ends of the table, so we have no idea what is going on. It could be even simpler - someone on the side is blowing the cup over with a nozzled fan.
      (there is no sound)

I have my doubts with people wearing baseball caps indoors, and it is over when they have them on backwards - especially when they are as old as this guy.

  • @Timmy_K

The second tea cup fall and the first two coffee cup falls you can literally see him brush against the cups with his thumb just before they move. There is also something weird about the table, like there is some thin layer of padding under the table cloth. Look at the bottom of the tea and coffee cups. They are slightly sunk down into the table making them look flat on the bottom. This would definitely help with balancing of the cup a little longer so the weight of the handle didn’t make it immediately roll over. And on the first tea cup fall he is very obviously pushing his hand down and dragging it along the table as he goes away from the cup. My guess there is that he is doing this to slightly pull on the table cloth and give the cup a nudge in that direction so it rolls.

I think I more believe Dan's opinion. If it were actually pulling on the objects he could have also really sold it with the cup swinging the other way then swinging it back to show some "force". He wouldn't need to reset it with each showcase otherwise.
I think he honestly believes he's doing telekinesis due to personal bias. His bias has prevented him from noticing the external factors that you should, factor out. I mean if we were serious about proving telekinesis we'd put a marked object of any kind in a small vacuum chamber. This takes away electrostatic charge nearly entirely and the wind from moving your hands is also factored out. The only factor left then would be them shaking the chamber as shaking any part of your body will shake the floor beneath you. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

If I had to guess based on how his hands moved for the tea cup and the coffee mug it has to be a thin string. His hands seem to be moving in a specific path to catch the string and the cups seem to jolt lightly when he does catch it. Especially when lightly catching it the friction force on the string creates a very inconsistent catch on the string making it look like its difficult to move. The cuts are probably to adjust the connection spot, like to his ear or the other side of the table.

If /I/ were to try to make this video (as it's presented), the first thing thing i would look to use would be magnets.
The surface if the "table" is covered with fabric that clearly has some kind if padding in or under it, obscuring the tabletop. We can't even know if there's actually a table under there. It could easily be two folding-tables at each side with cardboard or thick paper hung like a bridge between them, in which case his magic rocks would be good anchors for his false table. A magnetic bar, ball-bearings, or other such metal objects (in a pair, or either side of the center where he stages the cups) could be hiding under the "tablecloth." He could have magnet of some kind strapped to his thighs, coinciding with the magnetic metal on either side of the cups. When he moves his legs the magnets interact with the metal through the thin, false tabletop and -- wah-lah! Telekinesis.
Also note that the sound is 100% voiceover, and the audio from the actual video recording is completely gone. This would aid in both video cuts as well as and friction noise from the magnets scratching around under the cloth.
That or I would look to use some kind of "invisible" thread (i could think of a handful of ways to employ it here).

If he can do it live on a zoom-call, I'd be fairly impressed, because I think he may have an accomplice off-screen with a compressed-air-tank and a little blow-nozzle. He may be using more than one trick, not necessarily air-based, like very fine threads as mentioned elsewhere. You can do some cool "levitation" tricks with compressed-air, but you have to cut the sound from the video, or it's very obvious what you're doing. Toroid-projectors (smoke-ring-guns, without the smoke) are also handy for illusions, but they also make a sound, so you need to do the "music+voiceover" thing like he's doing. Of course, the entire viewed-scene could also be on a "set" built on a tilt-table, including the camera, background, and actor. That requires good support and muscle-control on his part, and a hat to hide his hair if it's long and could move, etc. I'd get him do to it with a hanging pendulum, live, to rule that out. As Dan indicates, if you can do as many "cuts" as you like, many tricks are possible.

Camera, lighting and stage are mounted on a seesaw type contraption. The seesaw is tilted slight to roll the cups but everything appears vertical due to camera and lighting moving at the same tilt. The tea cup and mug have to have the handle vertical because the stage can't be tilted far enough to over come the weight of the handle if was placed at its lowest point. The actor also seems to brace himself with his other arm during the tilting motion to prevent movement in himself.

With these sorts of things it's always multiple methods.
he could be using static electricity to roll the cup, he could also just be blowing on it considering he takes a while to get it the first try, only after changing the position of his mouth. And then he stays still for the rest of the section.
For the teacup, he could be doing the balancing trick you suggested, he could also be using a bit of nylon string tied to the handle which he literally pulls with his pulling motion. Then tdrags the thread across the table in the next shot, blundering and hitting it the string tensioned on a crystal too quickly in the next. And finally topping it off by spending a long time blowing one over very overtly in the next.
Same trick with the mug. Although some of the tricks looks to tilt more towards the balancing act.
As always, best to use Occam's Razor with this. Either he did one of those tricks, or some other trick we can't think of right now. Or he has a magical power yet undiscovered by Science or Investigators.

We used a camera cleaning blower- a little rubber thing that pumps a small amount of air. Though there are other methods of doing this too. The tea cup could be moved with a larger blower, or a thread, either pulled through a tiny hole from underneath or off to the side. But I suspect the balancing trick Dan mentioned is correct. To be honest, these are all old tricks that have several methodologies and have been done by illusionists for centuries. Also explains why he had problems when the handle was low, and the head bob with the "no hands" demo. This is why the huge crystals (to anchor thread), the cuts (to run thread through handle), and why he switch his pull on the teacup. Make a pass to hook thread with fingers, and slowly draw slack till it rolls. When it slipped the one time on the teacup he pinched with his fingers as a reflex.
Couple of ways it could have been on the styrofoam cup, too. Static was actually a problem, and that last big lurch was the thread sliding down and off the bottom of the cup

As someone that has actually studied various types of magic, I can say this isn't as telekinetic as the guy thinks it is. SciManDan, you're correct on the static thing. As for the glassware, the secret is in the handle positions and the cuts. If he wants to really prove it, then there's only a few things he has to do.
    1. Get a cup with no handle that isn't styrofoam, prefered to keep glass, and have a uniform shape.
    2. Remove the table cloth, it'll just make the handleless cup harder to move. It applies a lot of unneeded friction to the cup.
    3. Give a higher view, this is mainly to show you aren't touching the cup with your other hand or via other divices.
These last 2 are mainly a me thing; glass table, and a pulled back view. The glass table is to show nothing is hitting the table underneath to mess with the cup. The pulled back view is just to show nothing is messing with the edges/legs of the table.
If you really want to get picky, then nothing must get within a set distance of the cup, in the video the shadows made me think some touching was going on with the glass cups. Also use the audio in the video instead of doing a voice over later, anything can happen when it's muted.
*note - A magician can still make the cup move in front of a large crowd following these guidelines. This is just as decent of a way to prevent false claims.

A few things come to mind. Some under the cloth slight pressure to make the cups roll. Tilting the table is an option but I don't see any evidence of that. My best guess is he uses foot pedals to activate directed "air guns". He's wearing tight clothing, short sleeves and a hat. And there are heavy stones on the table cloth. This ensures that there is no visible movement. However, at times, you can see the cloth behind him move ever so little just when the cup starts to roll (the moment the most air pressure is needed). Depending on the side, the angle and width of the "air guns" (he probably put some sort of snoot on it), the amount of air needed and his body blocking the airflow, you can see it affecting the cloth behind him. The most obvious is with the heaviest object of course, the last cup. And then the most obvious is when the cup rolls to the right, check the cloth on the right hand side move just at that time.
Challenge to him: do a wide angle shot, with only a small piece of cloth on the table (not covering the entire table, just enough to accommodate the cup). Show us off the sides and underneath the table. If it's telekinesis, none of that should prevent you from rolling the cup.

After I inherited this magnetic thumb ring from my late grandmother, who was a psychic medium, I found out that I, as well, was able to telekinetically move many metallic objects. It's probably because we're blood related and share a soul link.

It’s not static. As someone below said, it is an invisible string like fishing line. Notice how when he “successfully” moves it with his hand, his hand touches the table and pulls the line connected to the cup. The two rocks on each side of the table are used as anchors connecting the line to the cup in the tea and coffee mug shots. And when he doesn’t use his hands it is connected to his ear which is why he has to move backward and pull it.

To me with the cup and mug it seemed like he was getting the rolling started by brushing his hand or elbow on the tablecloth. Once he's balanced it precariously between takes all it needs is the slightest nudge to make it unstable. Not once did I see him roll it in the opposite direction from which the handle was pointing.

Put the beverage container in a really stable position and then try moving it by your thoughts, or just try moving a flat highlighter across a table without any other influence than your own thoughts - No hand waving, no table manipulation in any way, no air, fluids, strings, lubricants, heat, electricity, magnetism or whatsoever and you'll have no results.

Not static electricity. An accomplice (or two) is gently blowing across the table from out of view of the camera.

  • @J4M3ST1T3

I think you're correct with the balancing of the cups, but I'd say there is an extra element to this illusion, I would put money on him raising 1 side of the table slightly (our right as we look at it) making the move more likely, because when he tried with a flat table the cup balances too well, not falling either way. This also gives the advantage of being able to balance the cup with the handle at the 2 o'clock position, so it appears to the viewers it is sitting stable in that position and not being fully upright so he can claim to be holding it there with the power of his mind.
He has the camera on the table so perspective makes it look level but you can see a slight disparity in the position of the background against his body position.

Look at the table, the Styrofoam cup sits on the 'table' as you would expect a cup to sit however when the China cup came out it appears to create a dip in the 'table' it also does not maintain an even surface throughout the clips almost like there's no real solid table underneath that green stuff.

In the last shot of the tea cup, he was clearly subtly inhaling deeply and exhaling towards the handle so that the light breeze triggers the reaction. Notice how he had the handle in an downward starting position.

What really helps is the fact that he's using a padded table, easy support for the mugs, I bet it wouldn't work as well on a wooden/glass table.

It's interesting that there's a ledge along the front which is cleverly camouflaged to be hard to see. This means one huge possibility:
That is NOT a soft, cushy surface you see. Since it's likely a smooth surface under a thin fabric, this could be done with almost anything from a flat magnet being scooted along under the material, to magnetic paint on or in the cups (except the obvious static electricity one with the Styrofoam), to a thick, heavy string under the material pulled by someone else out of shot, to a small plastic pillow under that material thar slowly leaks out its air, to several others I can think of which I don't want to take time, energy, or room to list here.

  • @blankiepoo

I do believe you are correct with the coffee mug however with the tea cup I think it doesn't weigh enough to fall over by itself on that surface and I do believe he is pulling or pressing down on whatever that mat is on the different teacup attempts to stop and start it falling you can see his hand that isn't being twirled around in some of the shots and it gets really strained for some reason then when it's about to fall it relaxes. which that is also why I think those rocks are there not for scenery but to help hold the mat in place in other areas so the stretch goes right into the cup.

I have to go with gravity for the latter cups. He never starts with the handle against the table, ergo it's just off balance enough to tip towards the side the handle is leaning.

Could also have low powered fans on both sides triggered by pedals or someone else, for the polstyrene cup.
For the teacup & mug, could easily have stuck on a washer or two on to the base in the cut scenes, and used a spring mounted, foot operated, magnet under the table (or on the thin plywood sheet over two tables so it is easier for the magnet).
There seems to be many many ways these tricks could be done.
    But lab conditions. Nope.
