i have the same guitar and my favorite dark blue hoodie has stained the white. its just a good sign the guitar gets some love and doesn't get left in a corner.
holy shiz-nuts davey, i just did a setup and buff job on a standard faded for a buddy .right out of the store it had that same drywall plug in the hole for the strap button. i love gibson guitars but man they get away with some shit dont they?
Those blue dry wall plugs are put in there BY GIBSON. I'm not sure why, but they've been sticking those in there instead of getting a tight fit from the screws for quite a few years now
"A gopher hole for the strap button screw...waiting for a marsupial to crawl out and bite me..." ...holy shit, dude...I about fell out of the chair laughing!! I love your vids, man!!! Hilarious with tons of useful info. This is also what I do as a hobby, I rebuild and refurbish guitars for people...and occasionally pick up a decent guitar at the pawn shop and totally rebuild them for use in my home studio. I have learned TONS from your material...keep up the great work, dude. Your work is GREATLY appreciated!!!
For details on all the setup steps watch: How to set up your Gibson Les Paul with Kip Bradford, he has a step by step vid on the procedure, he also has one for Stratocaster. Good work Dave, wish I knew all of this neat stuff.
Dave, you have reached a high level in your art and I think you should give serious consideration for a signed and serial numbered sticker on all guitars that come your way. You are famous man and this is how you will be remembered by serious fans.
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff no need to thank me for your generosity of time and knowledge. Tis a rare breed that provide a chance to succeed, just made that up now ha 😉
You can also turn this into a geometry problem. The ratios work out when the bounce between the top of the fret and bottom of the string at the 3rd fret equal x2 the bounce between the 1st fret and bottom of the string.
Just to add my two cents... I believe the pinkish discoloration is actually the primer paint showing through. That's right. I have the exact same guitar and returned a first purchase after it did the same thing after only a short time of having it. Apparently, Gibson chose a weird kind of paint to put on these models and they ALL start to fade where your forearm lays over the back of the guitar! As proof that the paint is actually rubbing off, the back of my Studio's guitar neck is also pink from sliding my fretting hand up and down the neck over the years. The paint is simply rubbing off and it's the red primer paint underneath that starts to show! Also... the gold plating on the bridge pickups where the side of your hand rests starts to wear off unusually fast as well. :-( I know... I can't believe a reputable company like Gibson would put out a product like this either! I called them long ago and they assured me it was NOT supposed to be like that. But like I said, after ordering a replacement it sure enough has done the same thing. LOL I should send a picture of it! All that aside, it's a fantastic sounding guitar. I keep it because it sounds so good. Great sounding pickups, awesome fret board and built like a tank. Rock on!
Davey is correct that it is too costly to make it worthwhile. However, I have used sticker material that I got at a local craft store, cut the shapes I wanted and when you are 3 feet away you cant even tell that they are stickers. It is a cheap but effective way to change the look without ruining the fretboard. If you ever want to remove them, just peel them off, then clean and condition the neck like I have done in a few of my videos. Have a great day!
I gotta say I love your personality and had lots of laughs watching the whole video. I have to wait about 3-4 weeks to get the studio in wine red with chrome I want !!!
Awesome videos as usual Dave. I was wondering if you could do one were you put coil taps on a studio or any guitar? I just bought a used studio yesterday and I would like to put in coil taps. Cheers
Dave, I love your videos. Great information, straight forward and delivered with humour and humility. Can you tell me, what is the name of the gauge you used to measure the height of the strings at the twelfth fret please? Thanks from New Zealand. Anthony
I take it that "goached" is the same thing as "screwed" or "fu***d? I wish you would do a video on "How To Lower The Action On A Gibson Les Paul Studio." I think that would be a great video.
The ad before the video started was a woman sticking the spout of a mini watering can up her nose. I already know this makes no sense so no need to send comment. Thanks for fixing my guitar davey! My toe hurts and my pink shirt is fading.
Dave - you are the man! How do I get rid of the sticky neck problem on my Les Pauls? I've got a '92 Studio that should be cured but when it heats up the funk starts... I can actually rub gunk off the neck almost like what a pencil eraser would leave behind. I'm getting close to just sanding all the lacquer off and putting a tung oil finish on, is that a bad idea?
@Bluebuthappy182 The Les Paul Standard has binding around the neck and body. The Studio does not. The standard generally has higher end humbuckers (eg. Burst buckers). The studio usually has 490R and 498T. They both sound similar but the studio is just a striped down standard. the studio body and neck tends to be multi piece where as a stand is usually solid, but have been made multi piece.
sup dave :) im the mexican guy, the alcohol thing worked on the lines of dirt in the maple fender strat arm but in others not well i tried with soap D: and a tootbrush and it worked well... now i painted it and sanded i dont know if its called satin or somethin like that but i looks good, its a 71 strat well atleast it says that in the neck xD well... thanks really for the support i've asked you things and then they go well... thanks dude keep this good videos come on :)
Dave, when are you gonna modify that neck support so you don't have to keep putting the neck in the wrong place on it. I see you do that every time and i wonder about it. I would never fix it, but it seems like you actually get things done. Just a thought. Cheers.
This is just a question, you mentioned a lot of great things, but didn't actually show "what" to adjust aside from the truss rod, I think you have a wealth of knowledge, but when you start measuring, you don't show what you adjusted for the height adjustments, not picking, just wanted to see what you probably think is mundane and ole hat to do, is something us novices really need to see, that actually adjustment(s) on the actual guitar equipment. I appreciate your time and efforts, thanks,!
Just the other day Davey i was thinking about how you & Bill Murray sound very similar to one another..( watching SNL re-runs )The very next day i am checking out this video because i own a L.P, (but the main reason is you're videos are awsome) I really LOL when i heard you say Gopher Hole & waiting for a Marsupial to pop out & bite my hand..I am still grinning from ear to ear
I have this same guitar and have a problem with the fret inlay on the 5th fret. The inlay popped out one day, and I tried to glue back in and I messed it up like a fool, and part of it is barely sticking up. Would it cost much to go to a Luthier and have the inlay popped out again and replaced? I love this guitar and you can barely feel it, but it bothers the hell out of me when I change the strings and run my finger tips over it and feel that small edge popping up.
First let me say thanks I have learned a lot from your videos Dave. I have a lp studio and the neck doesn’t seem to want to straighten. It has a slight bow to the nut end. I look down the centre of the neck and it seems straight but when looking down the neck eyeing the sides I see the bow. The string height is a little high at the 12th fret. Any pointers would be appreciated because I nervous about tightening the truss rod any further ( as you say might gouch it lol ) also I think i might have been the first to adjust the rod. Thanks Dave cheers
Forgive me if you answered this already...when you filled in the strap hole...did you use a "piece" of dowel OR did you fill it with a "mixture" of wood glue and fine wood-dust?
Aren't the linings in Gibson hard cases red? That is where the pink discoloration is from. I have an off-white Stingray Bass that got discolored from sitting on a stand (in one place) to long. Where the surgical tubing rested against the bass is tinted brownish - looks like a cigarette burn.
+Paul Vasso I personally think there is some sort of base coat or something that makes this red happen as the primary coat wears down. Even my cleaning towels aren't red (they're blue microfiber cloths). I thought I was the only one who's seen this. Very weird, none of my other guitars do this. Still love the studio though, I've had it for 8 years and, after a few refinements, it sounds great. I should note that it was horrible from the factory as far as setup. G's intonation was adjusted all the way back and it was still sharp. A new nut fixed it. But shame on gibson :/
Would it me much of a job to have those acrylic inlays replaced with real abalone or mother of pearl trapezoids? I have a 2013 Left handed and the plastic inlays have a tarnished brown type of tinge to them. Thank you.
I have a 2008 studio just like this one (ebony fretboard, alpine white), and it has the same pink thing on the same exact spot. I don't think it's the case, like someone mentioned, since my case is also white inside.

Hey Dave, 2 ?'s fer ya. 1) When you lowered the action at the nut, how? Did you file the sots a little? 2) I just want to clarify when you said you take factory string action minus 1/3 (30%) for your set ups, obviously it's working but how (if at all) does that effect your neck relief settings? @Bluebuthappy182 And actually if you're not set on a Gibson, Agile makes a LP copy called the AL-3000 that is better than Epiphones IMO and as good as most Gibsons except for the pickups. They are Korean made and run a little under 400. They have a maple cap and come in different burst paint options. Swap out the pickups and for 700 or less you have a better and cheaper LP than a Gibson IMO. They sell them at Rondo music.

Thanks for the video, would you make one about how to take the stop bar bushings using regular tools like a hammer or a bolt, I'm trying to change the ones in my LP Studio using a hammer as I saw in other video but the damn things don't move a damn millimeter.
You think the color came from a cheap guitar case?
Dave what exactily is the difference between a les paul stuido and a standard, besides price that is?
Dude i just check feel videos of you !!!! And i Love you man and the funny thing about that i m a Man ......got love.
Great job man.
Hey Dave, can you do a video about pickup height adjustement?
i wish that that pink color had come from a shirt :( i have also alpine white studio and the pink color has basically taken over and now i own a pink les paul :/ same problem in almost every alpine white les paul..
hey dave, where can i find those measurements you use for brand specific string height, and string radius?
is there any book I can buy to learn how to set the guitar up as you did?? please help thanks
***** thank you very much
🔥🔥🔥
I have a les paul, if the adjustment screws are pointing out the back rather than the front, does that effect the string action?
Dave, how do you lower the nut action?
If a string is touching the bridge behind where it rests on the slot, could that effect the sustain??
