      Cheaper to build your own server from an old PC. I have a PC I got from a company I worked for, Free of charge. Running Ubuntu server (free) with 12 TB of storage. The only cost was the hard drives.

    To say, Everyone Needs This, is a bit of a stretch. I for one would have no use for a NAS. The only thing I have to store is my writing and my audiobooks. I currently have two 2GB spinning rust drives in RAID 1, plus cloud storage, and a 1TB external M.2 drive. I have no movies, photos, or anything else that would require a ton of bulk storage. Still, it looks like an awesome device for those who could use it. Happy New Year.

    Sadly, I only own a the non NAS D4-300. No nas, just a SATA drive enclosure. My back is a water tight bag containing a 10, 8, 4 and a few 3 tb hard drives hidden deep in a apartment storage room locker. Maybe my next one will be a NAS, but for now, I just use their older model. 42 TB storage with a spare bay still unused. Possibly in a few years, 30TB drives will be cheap, then I can get 3 of those and make a raid, and then the D4-300 will also be in a water tight bag as backup of the backups.

    That internal USB does NOT contain the operating system; it's simply an initialization bootloader, the wizard of which you went through in your video.
    TOS 5.1 currently gets installed across all drives during initialization.
    The forthcoming TOS 6 will introduce the ability to user define a system drive for those whom would prefer to have it on the fastest possible storage media.

    First of all Happy New Year. You mention 4x 18TB which combined is up to 72TB. How do you make it 88TB? Quite the powerful NAS, but at quite the price as well. This NAS seems more aimed at small businesses rather than private users. This is also more what it appears to be when looking at the page linked for it.

    • @Britec09
      @Britec09  9 месяцев назад

      The NAS takes a max of 88TB and also, if you want the best, you got to pay.

    • @larsjohansen821
      @larsjohansen821 9 месяцев назад

      @@Britec09 Ok, in the link for it and in the video it's mentioned as max 18TB disks rather than the 22TB 88TB max would be. This is why i mentioned it. Whether it's the best or not is something that can always be discussed, but from the specs it does look to be the most powerful one and i think we all know that usually comes with a big price tag

    I quit using RAID on NAS. Want to know what happens when that cute little PCB quits working? I once found out the hard way. When the RAID controller stops, you will have a bad day losing everything. A NAS is not a backup device no matter the RAID settings. (Create a backup of your NAS also.)

    • @gott2641
      @gott2641 9 месяцев назад

      Sort along the same thought process many have thinking RAID is a form of backup-- it is meant for redundancy, and not a form of backing up crucial data.

    • @Britec09
      @Britec09  9 месяцев назад

      I said in video you can plug in an external hard drive to backup your nas volume which is a backup of your nas. Please watch the whole video

    • @giornikitop5373
      @giornikitop5373 8 месяцев назад

      no, these nas boxes have nothing to do with raid controllers. they use linux software raid. even if the device breaks, you can still connect the drives to a computer and recover the data as long as you know what type of raid it is and the correct disk sequence. but, yes, nas is not a backup and you should have copies.

    The only thing I see wrong with this unit is that it doesn't have any way to lock in the drives so they aren't stolen. Someone could remove a bay and take the drive and put the empty drive bay back in before anyone can notice. That seems like a security risk to me.

    Really, only two and six bays should be the minimums for a modern NAS. Two just for the basic mirror. Four is effectively RAID 5. No matter what the OS or file system is doing. Its still a single disk redundancy.
