As a Ukrainian, I have heard countless times of the Stalingrad battle, the russkies always brag about and give it as an example of German screw-ups, as having bombed the city made it impossible for tanks to move through and led to bloody melee combat situations, which turned a disaster for Germans.
Hamas also has tunnels and a city prepared for exactly this scenario. It is a very tough operating space.

I don't know if it's in the article, but one of the most important and ground breaking paradigm shifts in tactical operations was the extremely tight cooperation between the land forces and the air assets. For most of the IDF history tank crews were fighting with open hatches for maximum situational awareness - this was the doctrine that served them so well in the great tank battles of 1967 and 1973. With no real IFVs, just lightly armored m113 APCs, the infantry was dismounted for actual combat. The advent of armed and constantly available UAV coverage, with heavily armored APCs and tanks that both have top of the line APS and remote controlled optics - meant that for the first time in history the armored column could go in with hatches closed and no dismounted soldier in the open, fully protected while retaining superior situational awareness. In fact, for the first weeks a common tactic was to slowly enter a new street, baiting the enemy to draw near while the drone in the sky is just waiting for a clear missile strike.

They are survivors of many bombing campaigns, and massacres, not one not two, many, including instances where civilian were just lined up against walls and executed with machine guns.In addition, large swathes of them were subsequently deported to Sinai, and were replaced by settlers.
This occupation will never let them have the resources necessary to create a "better place", they simply can't. they were only allowed enough not to starve, or not to revolt.

There has never been a comprehensive near real-time review of Gaza Health Ministry figures during operations, nor an independent body count after the fact. They have determined that the Gaza Health Ministry's figures were reliable because they seemed plausible and didn't have too many obvious errors. The extent that the validity of their figures has been determined is basically that they did a cursory examination after hostilities ended.
The continued insistence that their numbers were ever correct during ongoing hostilities is so far divorced from reality to be indistinguishable from Hamas propaganda.
Also, those figures never were civilian casualty numbers, which is how most people interpret them.

Read a few manuals going back to WW2 and advised by urban warfare experts, that a city that hasn't been bombed to sh*t - its easier for us to identify EF locations because of the abundance of linear lines and the ability to easily identify and communicate locations. That is all lost in the wake of heavy fighting as irregular shapes help to conceal both us and the EF.

As an IDF vet from the 2nd Intifada, I can say that the IDF has historically been so careful in combat operations in urban environments (such as Ramallah, Shkhem, Hebron, etc) that this simply was not a factor. We were under incredibly restrictive ROEs in Ramallah in the early 2000s, and places like Hebron included not just the political layer, but also historically irreplaceable sites that the IDF was extremely careful to avoid damaging, even at the cost of IDF casualties (for example, in 2002 there was a famous example of Pali fighters using the Church of the Nativity to shelter from the IDF because they knew it would not be damaged). With that as the background for IDF previous urban combat experience, going into Gaza must have been like a neurosurgeon being asked to make a chainsaw log sculpture.

Being on the upper floors of a tall bldg in a war zone that is basically rubble is not a good idea. 1. Not structurally sound. 2. Drones, thermal, night vision etc will easily spot them. 3. If spotted you are trapped with no where to go. The same lessons were learned in the Revolutionary war. "Sharpshooters" climbing up in trees were stuck if they were detected. Climbing a tree or a destroyed bldg is NOT a good idea. Its different set of rules if you have the technology and your enemy does not. Think US Snipers or teams on rooftops providing overwatch in Iraq or Afghanistan. They did not have the ability to detect or call in an air strike. Mortars and grenades were the biggest threat.

    Very good overview.
Two points that I think needs to be clarified.
Firstly the point of moving to a "guerrilla tactics" by Hamas. IDF contradicts that tactic by conquering the area, clearing it, withdrawing, amassing new intelligence and then raiding it again. That way Hamas tactics are not effective.
As shown in the very low rate of casualties from the IDF in the last few months since the tactic has been employed.
Secondly the casualty rate publicized by the Hamas health ministry. It is correct that in previous conflicts the numbers from the Hamas health ministry and Israel were very close. The differences were usually that the Hamas health ministry counted any person who died during the conflict from illness old age whatever as a deaf contributed to the conflict. Other than that the numbers were very close, and still are. The difference is that the Hamas health ministry makes a point of not distinguishing combatants from civilians. They count everyone as civilian. Plus youths carrying weapons are counted by the Hamas health ministry and therefore by the UN as children. Israel will not divulge its sources but has a count very close to that of Hamas but with the distinction between combatants and civilians only the US and a few European allies are privy to these counts.
In the end once Israel has disconnected Rafa from its logistical backbone in Egypt there's no way for Hamas to survive in the long run. And New York times article from a few days ago outlines that Hamas is willing to giveaway civilian control of Gaza and de facto has very little arm control in Gaza in that sense Israel has reached its goals.

I suspect that Hamas/PIJ RPG munitions were a heck of a lot less functional than they were boasting about (and particularly their home-made tandem warhead variants, because fusing that isn't trivial to do properly) before the current conflict and their videos cut at just the moment when they'd have to scoot after shooting, as the Israeli tank turret slews around to return fire.

I read recently an article in The Lancet (a very prestigious medical journal) titled "Counting the dead in Gaza: difficult but essential." In that article they go over the difficulties the Gaza Health Ministry has had in estimating deaths, but they indicate that this is *likely an underestimate,* not an overestimate, and state that over 180,000 deaths "may be attributable" to the war in Gaza based on a "conservative" ratio of 4 indirect deaths to each direct death. I would appreciate it if you could provide your thoughts on this in a future video.

@@greenpanda84 The only article I could find criticizing the Lancet article was from "Forward," an openly pro-israel newspaper. Now I do think they raised some good points - this is not hard evidence of 180,000 deaths, as many on social media purport, but rather an estimate based on rough data - but I think that's fairly clear in the article itself to anyone who actually read it (probably not many who quote it unfortunately). The only serious contention raised against the article was the failure to distinguish between military and civilian casualties, but I think this is really an absurd criticism to make, as even if the entire estimated 30,000 fighters were eliminated it would be insignificant compared to 180,000 total deaths. And also the article was written by 3 doctors, 2 with Arab names, neither of which I can find to be 'activists.' It seems obvious to me that if there were serious issues with this article the Lancet wouldn't have published it or would have at least taken it down a long time ago after criticism.

@@yu6387t3d no, that is not, in fact, what the "article" says.
you basically quote it as meaning there are 180K dead, only that we are not aware of all of them.
The actual article's claim is that 180,000 are including people that WILL die in the future, "indirectly" from the war, as in people whose health will be worse off, etc.
it seems that it is you who at the very least misread the article itself:
      from the article itself:
"Armed conflicts have indirect health implications beyond the direct harm from violence. Even if the conflict ends immediately, there will continue to be many indirect deaths in the coming months and years from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases."
this whole article provides un-measurable conjecture based on a biased premise.

I think there are 2 things that are being heavily under examined when people evaluate the should and shouldn't of this war:
    1) Judging by the actions of Hamas and words is there any possibility if a ceasefire is reached they wont do it again, and does it really depend to Hamas on the status of the West bank and Palestine?
    2) Would it be better to have a quick brutal war or a prolounged battle to save more lives in terms of total innocent civilian casualty count in the two scenarios.
I honestly dont think these 2 are being discussed nearly as much as they should on the topic of this layest round of hostilities.
Feel free to state your opinions on the matter but do try to be objective on your answers to them if you do.

    • @friedrichrubinstein2346
      @friedrichrubinstein2346 27 дней назад +6

      1) The spokesperson for Hamas said on TV (Lebanese state TV iirc) that Hamas is going to repeat Oct 7th again and again and again until the state of Israel ceases to exist. And Hamas isn't recognized as representative of the Palestinian people, that is only the PLO. So Hamas is in no position to negotiate anything with Israel regarding the status of the Westbank or a Palestinian state.
      2) For a quick war it's kinda too late already. But fighting it out till the end now will result in less casualties on both sides than waiting for the next iteration of this conflict. If Israel agreed to a ceasefire now and withdrew entirely from Gaza, leaving Hamas in power, then we can be certain that Hamas will re-arm themselves, prepare their tunnel networks even better and provoke Israel into an aerial bombardment or even ground battle again, leading to thousands more dead civilians in their claimed territory.

Even if they're inaccurate, they'd have to be inaccurate by a VERY WIDE margin in order to make the number of civilian casualties remotely acceptable - also no mention of the IDF's alarming relationship with TikTok not helping in this matter.
