Kudos, Alex, on the lesson for others on the difference between stocked trout and other fish. Often, keyboard warriors don't have much else to do than try to shame others for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Great trout today. Fun seeing the change of species. Our local stocked ponds are overstocked year round. There are usually more fish in the pond than can be supported by the pond itself. This is done intentionally. The fish are there for the local population to catch. Many raptors, cranes, seagulls, and cormorants eat from these ponds as well. Left to their own, most of these fish would die due to lack of resources, those dead fish would then contaminate the pond and kill off the rest of the fish. Outside of leaving the fish on the shore too long or gilling the fish with your hook, nothing you could do in general catch and release is going to harm stocked trout to the point of causing an earlier demise than usual.
That is a video that needed to be made, some folks feel they have to apply wild trout standards to stocked trout. I really appreciate those trout stocking programs, most of my fishing is catch and release Bass fishing, so it's a treat to bring home some beautiful and tasty trout during the Winter.
Just watched the episode, Alex...thanks for the education on stocked trout. Living in Florida, I am not able to catch them so I enjoy watching others catch them. Always fun to watch!!!
Yep, can’t argue any of this. I did tend to hear the people “trout police” when they were talking about wet hands, nets and such. Now that you have explained this in more detail, I feel much more informed by both parties. That is for the lesson Alex. Great video of course. Keep it realistic
We have stocked trout here in the Southland of Chicago some lakes get a spring stock and some get a fall/winter stock. Most people will keep them, but they usually don't last more than a month after release. Keep it realistic 🎣
I moved to a rural community recently that has two ponds that are stocked with trout annually, and that's what our HOA dues mainly go to. It's fun to just hang out down the road from the house and just drop a hook and reel in some trout. I'm not big into fishing but it is a great way to spend a nice day by the water.
Very well said Alex!!! Great trout catches today!! And I usually just ignore the douch canoes!! Bc I've realized that not everyone is willing to do their research before opening their mouth. Thank you again Alex for always keeping it realistic 😊
Exactly like you said man. These trout are farmed for us to catch and eat and the money from our licenses go toward things like this for us as fishermen. Good explanation brother and even cooler catches. Really nice rainbows!!
As long as you follow the laws, which Im certain you do, then who really cares? Nice trout! Its like you said, they are essentially raised for our consumption.
Since I actually read my comments, I have to deal with it. I've had dozens, if not hundreds people tell me to "wet my hands". People just like to boss others around to feel better about themselves.
@@RealisticFishing, I live in Colorado and hear all the same things. We have some remote lakes where they drop stocked trout from helicopters. I’ve had idiots tell me how fragile these trout are and how you have to wet your hands and don’t hold them to tightly. If you drop them they could be brain damaged, they say. I say, “They’re bred for us to catch and eat. They drop them out of helicopters into some lakes or shoot them through a hose into others. We have native trout and they should be handled differently.
thank you for your statement ! were I live they stock trout in the early spring .I watched the state truck pull up to the creel open the tank and flush them out you are right by june they are all gone most of them die , so thanks again.
I couldn't agree more with you Alex, yep yep and yep! I always like the start of a new year because I'll get to use my shining panther spinners, flies, cane poles and etc. I myself have to explain this to people I know when they say "it's too small" or "let it grow", sadly they aren't year long and we best enjoy them while they last! In Ohio they are raised in fish farm ponds in natural lake water fed pellet’s but are released in late spring mainly into reservoirs. They’re all caught before summer it seems. Here it’s salmon eggs or corn and the trout bait marshmallows. Ground will still be frozen so no worms. They release at 12-14 inches.
There’s nothing wrong about fishing for trout, whether stocked or native species, when you follow the regulations that you should follow when you purchase a license to fish! 🎣 and yea Alex, you are correct-stocked fish are basically raised and stocked the purposes you mentioned. Good to see you catching a few! May you enjoy many days of fishing and catch a few each time you go out!
Missouri has a couple of stocked trout streams and I’ve fished similar. The spring is close enough I don’t think the trout die out in the summer but they don’t reproduce neither naturally. I only add a 5-gallon bucket and a boat cushion to my fishing gear
U might find this helpful when using power bait. Take enough to roll it into a marble or slightly bigger ball, between your palms. A size 10 or 23 bait hook or similar size miskito hook, making sure the eye of the hook is covered. It will stay on better.

The only reason I use a net is because I've lost a few trout without one. Stock trout are going to die unless the water temp is at least below 70 degrees. I mostly fish for trout in the mountains in East Tennessee so I'm a little more careful with the small ones I don't keep. I have caught a few wild ones in stocked areas ,but that's in year round cold waters. Great video. When the bass ain't biting much go trout fishing. I like it better anyway. The scenery is usually better.
Colorado stocks their lakes and rivers with so many rainbow trout that it isn't even funny. If you're not eating it, some bird is. Some people think they are an elitist angler for catching them.
I swear fisherman have the most intense opinions about things that DO NOT MATTER😂 It’s fine to fish for stockers with dough, it’s fine to wade with $1k of gear and fish with a fly rod. It’s fine to fish for them with anything in between. It’s fine to kill them and eat them and it’s fine to wet your hands and use a net for catch and release. None of this matters until you start berating or belittling someone else.

You are absolutely right! Where I live, they put them in small lakes, and ponds in March through early May. They are what I call a "put and take" fish. They are put there solely for people to take out. They are very good eating. Once the water gets too warm, whatever trout didn't get caught, dies.
I gave some people catfish last summer. I never do that again they left on the bank to root. Made me so mad. I rather throw them back for someone esle to have catching. Mainly if might be a kid. Or some that might need the food.
Very true. As far the fly fishing is concerned absolutely you can have success with flies but i feel like they're not so keen on dry flies but they'll attack aggressively on small streamers like wooly buggers cause you actually use them like a lure with enticing movements vs just a boring dead drift. Yes for aesthetic purposes, the scenery, better quality of fish and lack of people i prefer fishing for wild trout up in the mountains but now living in Texas Oklahoma is my closest option for any trout fishing. Broken bow is very crowded but there's some cool waterfalls and plenty of stocked fish that i either catch with wooly buggers or pull out the spinning tackle and throw on a crawler or a grasshopper. What i dont understand is how there's size restrictions and CnR only waters for fish that are all stockers. Protecting them as if they're wild and naturally spawning 😂

How do you know its 400 dollars worth of gear? I have waders that i paid 74 dollars for 😆. Of course i use them for everything but trout fishing 😆. Honestly the sparkles and glitter mean nothing when fishing, i feel. It's more to catch the fisherman. I agree with you though, the stocked trout are put there to be caught and eaten specifically. People where i fish, mammoth spring arkansas, trout capitol of the country supposedly, act the same way. Dont do this, dont do that, you should only use these hooks and those lures or flies. It gets ridiculous. Let people fish and keep your opinions to yourself and let people do them.. keep doing you as always Alex...
@@RealisticFishing I blame the over-romanticizing of trout fishing/fly fishing in the media (i.e. A River Runs Through It). People think that trout are their ticket to deeper spiritual understanding, and they buy into the uncompromising ultra-conservation because they are told by "experts" that is what they need to do. Honestly, I could go on for paragraphs about this.
@@FishingWithLardAlmighty I agree with both of you. I caught some flack for posting pictures on the tape measurer. NY has some of the dumbest trout rules/laws (general rule - can keep 5 with only 2 over 12"). I wanna know when I have two over twelve so that I can call it a day. I got the "You shouldn't do that." I was like, "I'm EATING THEM!"
My biggest question is why do some lakes and ponds get stocked and some don't? Is it strictly so people have the chance to catch them where they don't live naturally?
I crush stocked trout while fly fishing. I do way better than with bait(Berkely, pautzke, etc), literally 5 to 1. I generally fish a small stocked lake, but even in streams flies do better. just my 2 cents.

People need to educate themselves before opening their mouths. I feel like you know what you’re doing so, I keep my mouth shut and enjoy the video. I feel like if you were doing wrong DNR would let you know in a hurry. Great video Alex.
I have talked to the DNR about this. Thats why I am confident in what I say
Great vid! What's the name of the river?
The - Somewhere in TN River
Kinda like how you decided to tell me the sparkles do nothing? 😉 But I hear ya
@@RealisticFishing i did say, i feel.. 😆
😅
I have found that nothing makes fishermen lose their G-damn minds like 10” stocked trout. I completely agree with your reasoning on this.
What is with the Trout Hysteria?
Wash your Hands not before but after you touch "The Trout" Alex!! 🤣😆🤣
My biggest question is why do some lakes and ponds get stocked and some don't? Is it strictly so people have the chance to catch them where they don't live naturally?
yes
I crush stocked trout while fly fishing. I do way better than with bait(Berkely, pautzke, etc), literally 5 to 1. I generally fish a small stocked lake, but even in streams flies do better. just my 2 cents.
Winter stockers? These fish only make it a few months and never really get accustomed to eating flies
@@RealisticFishing Yessir. Always on a sinking fly. Something small, not too flashy. That being said our last couple early winters have been really mild for the north east.
delicious... I've got a few in my fridge right now.
I used small treble hooks.
Makes it harder for them to get off the hook!
@@RealisticFishing problem is finding treble hooks that small
I live in British Columbia , the metro Vancouver area , another situation is a lot of tho lake around Vancouver has wild species these lakes also get stocked with Hatchery Rainbow trout ,So these lakes will have a mix of wild and Hatcheries, some people that can’t tell the difference need to know how to handle the trout properly because they can not tell the difference between species , Like Cutthroat Trout and Rainbows , and Kokanee , and Dolly Vardens
I don't know how you caught those fish.No $200 rod,no $300 reel and no specialized fishing clothes. You must be doing something wrong. But I still love you and your videos.Keep up the good work.
Must have been pure luck!~
perfect
fly fishermen and #1 in arrogance. I like to trigger them by telling them for me the best freshwater fish is carp.
😅
Question.....why do stocked trout die in a few months?
Because the water gets too warm
And don't even get me started on the Trouser Trout Police. 😁
sweet
SWEET!
1000%
👍
Ok I think I noticed a difference in where you were. The beginning at the boat ramp, there was a dock, later there wasn’t. Two different spots at same lake or two different lakes? OR I’m just an idiot.
Its a dam, and its always there.
