  • You do not have to remove the negative cable first. Usually removing the positive cable first will cause no problems. However, removing the negative cable first is safer because it eliminates the possibility of having a short circuit if you inadvertently touch a tool to both the positive terminal and a metal part of the car at the same time. Such a short circuit could cause a spark which could ignite any hydrogen gas which happens to be present, especially in an unsealed battery. Also, the short circuit current could be in the hundreds of amperes and, if you are holding the wrench which is causing the short circuit, you could get a serious burn. The battery could be damaged.
If you first connect the negative cable, then when you connect the positive cable there is a chance the wrench will complete a circuit between the battery and the chassis of the car.
This will at a minimum generate a spark, but that spark could eject molten metal toward you causing injury. If the battery is offgassing, the spark could ignite those gases causing an explosion.
Connecting the negative terminal last prevents that spark from occurring. Since the negative terminal is not connected, a circuit won’t be completed if the wrench touches both the positive terminal and the chassis at the same time.
Note that there may be a small spark when you connect the negative terminal after connecting the positive terminal. This is due to parasitic loads in the car (such as the radio memory, the radiator fan, or remote control systems) which may not be disconnected when the keyswitch is turned off. This spark is usually small enough not to cause a problem.
