We just moved to San Antonio, Texas last year and were shocked to learn that our son has to say a pledge of allegiance to the Texas state flag at school. It really is like it's own little world down here. Watched your videos before our trip to Germany this summer. Quite helpful!
I'm a Texan (Dallas) who spent 5 years living in Nürnberg! Glad I found your channel, even if it was after I moved out of Germany!
I from texas and iwent to germany in 2012 and ocktoberfest was soo much fun
great episode guys :) I will spend one year in Texasl, live there and go there to school. I'm so excited!
This is an interesting one for me...most of my ancestors were from Bavaria and I was born and raised in rural East Texas...
Complete culture clash in my head now...lol
Come visit bavaria then ^^
enjoyed this one guys!
They are also both very conservative and both economically very strong regions.
Get some Slayer for the Outro!! hahahah Nice Greetings from Bavaria!!
The Texas state fair starts in late September and ends late October.
A funny thing I noticed when in Bavaria, my cousins liked to say Alles Gut, which is similar to the southern saying, It's all good! I am a Tennessean, my mother is German, had a great time in Bavaria!
You forgot to mention the enormous religious fundamentalism in both Bayern and Texas.
Where are u from? I am from Bavaria and i cant agree with that so where in bavaria did u get to know this religious fundamentalism
Yirq Andersson You mean despite bavaria being controlled by the single most religious party germany has ? A party opposed to some basic human rights (Look up their stance on homosexuals) for completely religious reasons. I'm sorry, but if you're living in bavaria and not noticing this you have your head up your ass.
Adin Panther Why do people like you always feel the need to bitch about religion? Religion isn't going anywhere, so get over it.
***** I beg to differ. Religion is slowly becoming what it's supposed to be: A thing of the past. The faster, the more people can be saved from their stupidity.
Yirq Andersson I am an American who was born in Munich (Army Father, German mother) and I must say that Adin is one of those liberal types that most real Americans despise.
I'm from Texas and we have a saying here. "If you're not from Texas you're a foreigner." :)
Haha, I'm from Texas to but, I never (that I remember) heard that saying, but it is funny.
Jon Herring Its almost the same with bavaria. We like to say there are Germans and then there are Bavarians...which of couse makes no sense in these days, but still... it is like another country. :D
(and actually, I think you could say that for the east, the west or the north of Germany, too...some of those talk in a weird accent too)
Southerners think of themselves as being better than everyone else but that doesn't stop us from being polite and friendly. In fact, southerners are so friendly that it's become a stereotype to people who will happily watch a woman get raped while eating a bag of chips and never a thought to help the victim. That is why in the northern U.S. women are taught to scream fire instead of help because more people there are willing to watch a fire than to help out. Here in the south simply screaming help is good enough. Because we're grown men and women.
Considering that the only true stereotype among the millions about Southern Americans is our politeness then I can't really get myself to care if I on this one comment said an incorrect negative thing about an entire region of the Country. Welcome to our world. We in the South deal with insulting stereotypes all the time and we don't have the soap boxes to stand up on and make the public corrections. So that being said northerners themselves have said on t.v. to the public that screaming fire is your best option if your being attacked. I've also heard mostly in New York that when people witness someone being attacked they don't help out at all they either ignore it or stand there taking pictures, not for the police but for themselves. Now I could be wrong but If I was then there would be more "Hero" stories from the North and less helpless victims with the public standing around not doing shit because they're weak pathetic coward stories.
The knockout game is a northern thing not a southern one because in the south we don't tolerate that sort of random violence against the innocent public. That's only one of the many reasons why we're better people. But I know you'll disagree because you probably think it's a good trade off to support perversion and treason as long as you get some gay marriage or welfare handout. We actually do what's right and have values and principles like we all used to until the northerners forgot what those words meant.
I once dropped that in a meeting, with execs from TX in the room: Bavaria & Texas have a lot of similarities: 1) Both want to be independant from the union they're a part of 2) Both speak the language of their neighbour to the south. 3) Both have evolved from the (bovine) lifestock industy 4) Both have a, sometimes excessive, local pride! (P.S. I'm Bavarian ;-)
You are right about that, as a Texan whose grandmother came from Bavaria, I'm very headstrong and proud. And I wore lederhosen when I was a child, and drink from the biggest stein I can.
What, no mention of New Braunfels, TX? Come on now, New Braunfels is a city based around the German stereotype. (Few miles North of San Antonio.) They hold a 10 day festival called Wurstfest. I would like these two guys make a trip out there. :)
GREAT TOPIC!
Good one!
In Texas, its more common to hear "Ya'll take care!" rather than take it easy. I gathered from his comments that the southern guy is not a native Texan.
Anyway I have a good friend in Bayern (Bavaria in English) who would really find this little video interesting.
Texas phrases
Y'all = you all - How are y'all doing?
Fixin to - preparing to - I'm fixin' to go to the store. Do you want anything?
Sir/Ma'am = All Southerner's address their elders this
I lived in Kentucky but I don't remember that so much but cool.
Can u do an episode of famous german people who are also very famous in the US?
Because there are a few German Stars people don't even know they are german.
And keep up these nice videos!
Not sure what there is to to say though, besides that there is usually a recommended speed limit of 130 km/h, which people can exceed at their own risk (I was told insurances won't pay for accidents that occur beyond that speed). Other than that, the Autobahn is just a highway system to me.
Everything you said about the Texas State Fair is true. The Red River Shootout is the same weekend. Source: I am from Austin and I attend OU. We get school off the Friday before the Texas State Fair. It's pretty religious.
Sandra Bullock's mother immigrated from Germany. She even speaks fluent German herself.
Fun topic!
Did the Swabia region have a flag before it was stuck with Bavaria? When I visited Nuremberg I was surprised to see stores selling Franconia Flags.
Texas had a huge German immigration movement in the 1800s There are many towns that still hold the traditional German names along with the dialect that is not found in Germany any longer. Pretty cool Check out "Texas-Deutsch" when you get a chance!
People don't really think of Alaska as the largest state because it's really just a big chunk of land with few people on it.
Howdy, nice vid
both of u rock the big one! ;-)
German football is awesome i love their league more than any other. I would like to go to Germany someday and also Ireland (i'm a mexican american so just curious to see if they are similiar to us). Still though in my studies if I get the chance to study abroad I will definitely choose Germany over a more familiar place like (Spain, i am more comfortable in foreign spanish speaking countries than foreign english speaking countries).
i dont know why every time i watch your videos i have to drink coffee
You forgot to mention (or I just didn't catch it) that both Texas and Bavaria each are the biggest state of the US and Germany, respectively. That's another common thing about those two.
They were talking about the way some rurals dress, not Bavarians in general. They even said something to the effect of "every now and then you'll see some people dressed like 'that'" - when talking about both Texas and Bayern/Bavaria.
:O ich möchte mehr über die Fränkische Dialekt lernen! Wie dekliniert solche Wörter wie: Ein(e/es)?
I love Texas and I'm not even a native. But as they say here, I wasn't born here but I got here as soon as I could. I was born in Florida.
Alex and Jim, Have you ever been to Fredericksburg or New Brundfels Texas ?
I live in Franconia, which is technically a part of Bavaria but people don't identify as Bavarian at all. The accent is different, the traditions (including clothes) are different. So you shouldn't always generalize.
Talk about the differences in schools in the US and Germany! :D
Fried Snickers is so awesome, im german but i did it everytime when ill eaet French Fries ;)
pls make a video on healthcare in GER and in USA
With few exceptions, the great majority of even the most populous states/ lander are rural in terms of land area. The majority of TX's population does live in metropolitan areas of 1 million or over. Not the HUGE majority (like Calif - which also has large rural expanses) but TX is certainly not predominately rural in terms of where the population lives.
Im from southern Texas and we also have Octoberfest. haha
Bavirian language is strange, but their food & beer is the best of Germany.
recht host bua!
This was a good comparison, haha.
One thing I learned in my German class that I found really weird is that the cows are different in Northern and Southern Germany. I forget which, but one has spotted and the other has solid cows. lol
southern is spotted and northern is solid
Ah, yes. That's kind of odd, from an American perspective since we use all sorts of cows anywhere lol.
Many different cattle breeds are spotted, the Holstein originated in Northern Germany/Northern Europe. I don't know the common breeds in Southern Germany.
LOL! I live in Texas. I think you're talking about the rodeo. I've never been to the Texas state fair, but I know you can get almost anything fried at the rodeo. It's in February and lasts for about a month here in Houston.
It's like... you can talk about generalities of how "other" people are all day long, but as soon as somebody talks about generalities of how people are from your area, it suddenly becomes a personal attack. Neither is it an attack or something personal, so do not reduce it to that.
one single word: AMAZING ;)
I still think it is kind of funny that the typical stereotype of Germans in Lederhosen and so on exists mainly only in Bavaria. And in Germany the Bavarians are regarded more or less as a foreign country or the bigggest German minority. Which also results in some political conflicts. F.e. in Bavaria they have a independent conservative party the CSU, that does not represent any other county Germany, but normally allies with the CDU (the main German conservativ Party). But because the CSU is a minority party they normally try to force stupid laws on the rest of Germany, which no other state really want. F.e. the "Herdprämie" (money parents get for staying home and don´t bring their young children to the kindergarten), "Autobahnmaut" for cars (toll for public highways) and so on
That's true for every country. I imagine most people are normal and the ones that look "different" get all of the photos taken of them. People used to think all Americas were cowboys and they still believe we all carry guns (I've never owned one myself and don't know many people that do).
I went to Germany and i saw men wearing lederhosen alot. Mostly it was older guys and they all had funny walking sticks with stuff carved into them and things stuck to them everywhere
I'm Bavarian and the thing about pride is absolutely true. I'm proud and I'm glad to be Bavarian. But we also have a lot to be proud of: our own kind of language, having invented brewing beer, best education system in Germany (we say the north ones have the "cheap diploma") and much more
Bavaria is Germanies largest state by land, the largest population has North-Rhine-Westfalia. Germany has almost the size of California, but 80 Mio inhabitants. We have 16 states, incl. Berlin, Hamburg + Bremen/Bremerhaven wich are independent town-states.
Amazing as the only word? If there was only one word to describe I would say "Stau" (-> traffic jam) ... or would it be "Baustelle" (-> construction site)? Well, the latter results in the first so I'd go with "Stau".
I'm bavarian, too (since I was born) and I can't do it either ...
Texas state fair is a month long usually from late September to mid October . They will fry anything, fried beer, fried margaritas, fried butter, ect... The Texas state capital is taller than the national capital and it was intentional. Texas has a strong german population in Texas had a lot of impact on the state, they that almost ended slavery before we entered into the United States, they almost stop the state from leaving the union before the civil war, they lost but the votes were very close. Texas also has its own dialect of the german language called Texas German. When I go to german festivals and christmas markets, there is a strong Bavarian influences. These are just my observations growing up in Texas.
I would like to hear about the Autobahn
You forgot to mention strange Music :P
Dirk's my favorite too.
Both Texas and Bavaria have big independence desires. Many Texans would also consider themselves Texans rather than Americans, and many Bavarians would consider themselves Bavarians rather than Germans.
My family is from Bavaria
Austin is very different from the rest of Texas its the blue heart in the middle. And i think the Texas accent is very low in that area :D Austin is a great young town that is fast growing !!!
hey alex aus welcher ecke von deutschland kommst du eigtl. moin aus bremen
The duchies of Swabia and Franconia were split long before national flags were developed, but a symbol for Swabia are the 3 black lions, which were the coat of arms of "Hohenstaufen" dynasty and nowadays coa of Baden-Württemberg. The Franconian flag is derived from "Fränkischer Rechen", which was initially the coa of the bishops of Würzburg. Modern usage shows that many Franks are eager to show that they are not Bavarians.
a supplement: the german and the polish cultur are so closely linked, cause large parts of poland stood for centuries under German or Prussian domination
Actually, in terms of land, Alaska is much larger.
I know this gets ask every episode but what are the song titles at the beginning and the end of the episodes. If you know please comment
Despite Alaska technically having the largest land mass (1,717,854 km² vs 696,241 km²), Texas has the largest liveable land mass and is part of the continental United States. Not to mention Alaska being one of the least densely populated. Basically in all other terms aside from land mass, Texas is largest. It is even shown colloquially ("everything is bigger in Texas"). It's pretty much pointless to point out Alaska is TECHNICALLY larger (but only in land area).
Yeah, I meant it area-wise. Thought it was obvious :D
The Typical American for me is .
-Has a Gun ^^
-Has a small House (warum auch immer)
-Has a big car
-Is a nice guy
-Is a nice guy who know that German are no nazis (anymore)
Thats how i like Americans :)
besides the gun the should be forbidden everywhere .
I'm American and hate guns too.
Germans for me is
Pretty blonde girls ;o)
Driving fast on the Autobahn
Octoberfest
Black Forest Coo Coo clocks
Gorgeous castles on mountain peaks
Clean cities and roads
Sports cars (maybe more Italian)
Pretty blonde girls ;o)
The Nazi thing is history. No one cares about that anymore. It's really a lesson for everyone not to get fooled again (there were people here cautious of Ronald Reagan because of his oratory skills).
Wally Smith i think the same about guns only guns like Air rifles with 7,5 Joule should be legal because i think shooting is also fun :D
I'm American, so let us see how many of your stereotypes can I personally confirm...
-I don't have a gun, unless you consider a Daisy BB gun 'enough' of a gun
-I don't have any house because I am a university student
-I drive a pickup truck; so check to that
-Yeah, I would say I am nice
-Of course I know that Germans aren't Nazis
plot twist
Ich bin auch Deutsch! Ich wurde in Bayern geboren. Meine Eltern sind Amerikaner. Deutsch ist nicht meine erste Sprache. I hope to learn more German while im in school.
No guns!?!? Fuck that, guns are fun.
A small house in America is a medium house in Germany :)
Alex, which team do you support in the Bundesliga?
I'm from Texas and I've never heard of the state fair that they mentioned ._.
it's in Dallas every year. This year it's from Sept. 26 to Oct. 19.
Nor is there any reason to point out that "only _____ people do that" or "we all don't do that". That's the nature of a generalisation... while it may not be true for every individual instance, it is generally true overall.
I don't know anything about population sizes of German states but Texas is only the 2nd largest in terms of population (most populated is California) and 2nd largest in terms of land (largest is Alaska which is MUCH larger than Texas).
You hold that Maß wrong :D
Talk about the political parties in both Germany and USA.
Rechtsfahrgebot zb auch erklären. in den USA ist es normal das man überall überholen darf soweit ich weis, deshalb wird da oft gefragt: Wie können wir mit 200km/h sicher fahren.
Munich is the most amazing place ive ever been
What about NY vs. Berlin? :D
Not yet...
Regarding in the USA the stereotypical German being the Bavarian, that's many Americans regarding Germany as being Bavaria. That's because of Bavaria being the American zone after World War Two.
Many Bavarians regard all of Germany north of it as being Prussia. And, there can be prejudice between the two. Bavaria is also more like Austria, in terms of Culture, than like the rest of Germany.
An interesting similarity between the US and Germany might be, if what I read on the internet is correct, is that the north is more liberal and the south more conservative; in both;
in Germany this is also related to the type of christianity followed: north - protestant, a more liberal religion, south - catholic. These are generalizations, but at some level it must be true.
I tried shazam and it couldn't find the song at the end.
wie heißt das lied am ende?
It seems to be the case in a lot of countries.
Limburg the south of Holland, Sicily in Italy, even the south of france.
They talk with a strong dialect and often are the poorer part.
czar123 Texas and Bayern are both big money states/bundesländer and are more right wing/conservative. They earn the money for the nation. In Holland Limburg is more conservative too but there is less money there indeed.
They already made a video about it.
And the funny tging about Bavarian languages or dialects is that everywhere you go in Bavaria, they speak partually completely differently, but if you are Bavarian you can understand them all while the non-bavarians are having a hard time understanding us.
So weit ich weiß legen die Franken Wert darauf, nicht als Bayern bezeichnet zu werden. Gibt es sowas in Texas auch?
not a fair comparison; it is typical for the old world that the capital cities be the, or among the, largest and most important cities, economically, financially, population-wise etc., in the country; it is the exact opposite in the new world; there it is typical that capital cities carry out primarily administrative functions and not necessarily economic or anything else, and the govt simply set up shop in some city... usually small ones;
Geil wär es, wenn Alex in Bayrischer Tracht
und Jimy in Texanischer Kleidung säßen
und über Texas und Bayern reden würden.
make a comparison with North Rhine Westfalia and California ^^
- both states in the west
- both have the biggest national population
- both media capitols (even if hollywood is a little bit bigger :D)
oh and both have -ia at the end :D
StarmaGeddon But only in english. ^^ In german it's Nordrhein-Westfalen and Kalifornien. No -ia. :D
Co Lis but -en
Even though Cologne is the largest media capital in the west, Berlin (or Potsdam to be more precise) has the biggest film industry in Germany. The Hollywood of Germany is called: Babelsberg.
Shout out to Miami (Dallas) Texas old tyme law men in Ultimate Supreme Football (NFL), the Miami Saddlebacks in PLH (NHL), Miami Rangle Range in MLBaseball, Miami Quicks Though in PLB (NBA), and Miami Mountain Barbeque in PLSoccer. Shout out to Boston (Houston) Boston in USFL (NFL), Boston Health Healers in MLBaseball, Boston Balls in PLS, Boston Bounce in PLB (NBA), and Boston Titans in PLH (NHL) Downs.
Why do you think that everyone in bavaria always wears 'lederhosn' and 'dirndl'? I've been living near munich my whole life and the only time i see people in lederhosn und dirndl is during the oktoberfest! And btw 'mia san mia' is just a expression that fans of fc bayern münchen use ;)
Es ist ein tolles Thema, aber ich finde man hätte mehr draus machen können...
Hey Alex Hey Jim dont Forget the fränkisch People and the fränkisch berch kerwa
in bavaria
Aus dem Krug trinkt man aber anders :D Hand durch den Henkel, Daumen draussen lassen
Famous Germans in the USA? Heidi Klum, Dirk Nowitzki, Diane Kruger, Kirsten Dunst (German dad), Sandra Bullock (German mum). Most Americans might know Rammstein & Tokio Hotel.
No, Texas and Vermont are the only two states that have (at one point in their history) been a completely separate nation from the United States.
I would really like to see an episode about communism in East Germany. Maybe Alex can like describe how life was like in East Germany? I'm sure Alex MUST know some East Germans... But what I am by far most interested in is how East Germany was integrated into the whole Germany; they had extremely different life styles... how did they pull it off and are they trying to pull off the same thing with the eastern european EU member states?
ich war letztens noch in bayern und es war super ich war auf dem Zwisel :3
really could find it
can you send me a link
Just to clarify, "Don't Mess with Texas" isn't a state motto or any kind of a threat; it was the slogan of an anti-littering campaign.
It's aimed at its own people, not outsiders. That said, given Texans' somewhat pugnacious reputation; the mistake is understandable.
You ought to mention, that two different tribes live in Bavaria. The Frankonians of the north (around Nuremberg) speak another language and don't like to be called "Bavarians".
There's also a Swabian minority in the southwest.
