Shaft ossifies from primary centre of ossification in 8th week of IUL Lower end (growing end) ossifies from secondary centre of ossification which appears in 1st year after birth, and fuses in 20th year Upper end ossifies from secondary centre of ossification which appears in 4th year after birth, and fuses in 18th year Shaft has 3 borders and 3 surfaces:- •Anterior border: initially Oblique (Anterior Oblique line) from Anterior part of Radial tuberosity, and then vertical down to Styloid process •Posterior border: initially Oblique (Posterior Oblique line) •Medial border: sharpest border, from Radial tuberosity to Ulnar notch on medial side of lower end •Anterior surface lies b/n Anterior and Medial borders: contains an oval nutrient foramen in the centre •Posterior surface lies b/n Posterior and Medial borders •Lateral surface lies b/n Anterior and Posterior borders Lower end has 5 surfaces:- •Anterior surface: has a ridge against which Radial artery is palpated •Posterior surface: has Dorsal tubercle of Liester •Medial surface: presents the Ulnar notch •Lateral surface: it is prolonged downwards to form the Styloid process •Inferior surface: Lateral Triangular area (articulates with Scaphoid bone), and Medial Quadrangular area (articulates with Lunate bone)
