  • Here's a vacuum I have a pretty unpopular opinion about. This was a goodwill find with that purple Maxima 4704. It was dirty and pretty plugged up, but the dust cup filter did its job well. The dust cup filter on the AS1000-AS1009 series is a DCF-21 or a pleated paper filter, similar to a HEPA filter. The filter on this one kept the motor pretty clean, and the clear area above the filter was literally spotless. As some of you know, I swapped parts from an AS1050 bagged onto this body, mainly because the AS1050 body had an electrical issue that I eventually fixed. The body and the AS1050 parts were at my sister's house, and she didn't change the bag, which is why it doesn't sound great. When I swapped the parts back, I got her a pack of bags. I like these, I do. They clean pretty good for a cheap vacuum and have decent suction and airflow. I wish there were aftermarket brushrolls for these since the AS1050 at my sister's house could use one, but what can you do?.

Hot Take: I think these are the last truly good Eureka's of the time. I do like how the AirSpeed technology helps out with extra airflow (something that definitely works in the 4870's favor, even without official AirSpeed technology). My family used to have this at their family ranch that was used as backup to the Bissell Powerforce Bagged, and that eventually got replaced by a god-awful AirSpeed One, and then that got replaced by a Hoover React Professional. The few times I used that OG AirSpeed, I actually liked it, very good agitation and airflow for a bagless vacuum, but I'm not a big fan of the flimsy power switch design.

The Airspeeds with the DCF21 filter setup was definitely really solid for bagless vacuums. I wish they didn't switch to those god awful dual cyclonic designs.
