You don't need to scratch the diode legs or switch pins, flux takes care of the oxide. Also, you want to heat up the pin and then add the solder to the pin. You risk getting cold joints otherwise. Don't bee afraid to add flux as you go along.

You should reverse wind the coiled cable after you heat it up. It will add more tension
