I have had a 69 mach 1 351w for 33 years (since high school) and can tell you exactly what this takes (yes, I am now an old timer). After checking my garage:
Engine Oil = Valvoline VR1 racing oil. This has extra zinc already in it (for your cam and lifters). Use 10w-30 winter and 10w-40 summer (if you can find it). We would run 20w-50 if we were going to beat on it a lot for summer.
Power Steering Oil = Valvoline Type F ATF
Valvoline was the Mobil 1 of the 80's/90's and works well on these older engines.

      @jusvids4898 4 года назад

@@angelgjr1999 Hi Angel, while 10w-xx is correct for these older cars (how they were built), I highly recommend you get rid of 10w anything on newer modular engines (especially in winter). You engine tolerances (bearings, rings, etc) are WAY thinner than the older engines from the 60's. I have both, 69 mach 1 and I am in the process of building a 03 mach 1 engine. You should only use 5w-xx on newer modular engines. Look in the owners manual and on the cap. You want thin oil when it starts up (the first number), but you can go a bit thicker when warm (the second number).

Find an old timer who has some experience with these cars. let them turn the distributor and advance the timing so you can take advantage of the 91 octane. It makes a world of difference. Think of it as loading a tune revision on your car. Also you probably should get the carburetor floats tuned in aswell. If you had the 4 speed you would definitely run a better time and it would be spinning the tires between gears.

According to "It still Runs" is giving some credit to the 289 Mustang as it was closer to 8 secs. They also offered the 289 Hi-po which hit 60 around 6 flat. The misinformation is claiming this was of the quickest cars in its era. Most of HR and RT magazine times was recorded with the tires of that era. Some had 2-3 secs of wheel spin. With modern tires the muscle cars of that era are quite impressive. Here are results of their quarter mile times with today's tires and minimal wheel spin. All with various engine displacements offered in each car.

Here is a heads up on how to check your transmission fluid accurately and the type of transmission fluid that the 289 calls for.
    Step 1
Park the vehicle on a level surface. Apply the parking brake.
    Step 2
Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
    Step 3
Shift the gear selector lever through all of the gears while maintaining pressure on the brake pedal.
    Step 4
Place the transmission in the "Park" position.
    Step 5
Wipe away all dirt and debris from the top of the transmission dipstick, using a clean rag. Pull the transmission dipstick from its tube. On a Mustang, the transmission dipstick is located on the passenger side of the engine, between the engine and the transmission. The top of the dipstick will be curled into a circle.
    Step 6
Locate the transmission fluid level marks towards the tip of the dipstick. The fluid level should be above the "add" mark and just below the "full" mark.
If required, add Ford automatic transmission fluid (Ford specification #ESW-M2C33-F / Type F) by pouring new fluid into the dipstick tube. Take care not to overfill the transmission.

If you put transmission fluid in the power steering pump it will cause the oil rings to swell up. Which is good only if it leaks. Otherwise it will cause the oil rings to not last as long. I hope that helps.

I'd personally have a 390, with some modern brakes, t5 transmission and new suspension, and leave the rest all stock. But I'm working really really hard so one day I can buy one.

It used to be one of the fastest cars back then"... Then I remember it's 2020 not 1999 and technology changes... and I got used to driving cars w turbo n more efficient engines... Once I finish some engine work, I'm gonna try the 0-60 time also but 6-9 seconds sounds about right depending on setup.

It's great that Beverly is still an awesome car no matter how slow. The dash- is awesome with all the Chrome pieces and that classic look There's definitely some things on that Mustang slowing that motor down but the old motors are so fun and easy to make more horsepower. I'm not sure if you mentioned if it had headers but Longtube headers would make a big difference, especially with a cam. Don't go too much Cam or you'll lose a lot of torque on the bottom end. Make sure you have real strong spark if you add more gas and air.

The way you check the transmission fluid level is drive for several miles, this gets the transmission to normal operating temperature, then you leave the engine running and remove the transmission dipstick, wipe insert and remove again. The engine has to be running on these old cars. Check all of the other fluid levels with the engine off. The power steering pump has a cold and hot full level line and I use ATF on a car of this age. You can check the engine timing and the total timing advance can usually be up to 36 degrees BTDC based on the fuel you are using. Listen for any engine pinging and if you hear any you must buy better fuel or retard the engine timing but in my experience a stock engine will be happy with 34 degrees of total engine timing with 91 octane maybe even 87 if the engine is low compression of 9 to 1 or less.

Comp Cams makes an oil with Zi c and Phosphorus. I believe its synthetic with additives. Great for pushrod flat taper motors

7.3 is actually a decent 0-60. Granted supercars are way beyond that but driving a 7.3 sec 0-60 car is not boring.

If this is a 289 in a 1968, it's a 2 bbl if it is the factory engine. It produced 195 HP(albeit measured different than today)The vin would be 8X02C with X being the plant it was built at. All 302s in 1968 were 4 bbl and produced 230HP.

I think with older cars the tourque was more violent due to the lack of traction and plus the seats. I have a 1972 olds 442 restomod and a guy in a 2012 ss camaro wanted to race me and he barely out accelerated me. My specs are 425hp and 518tq. It has a 2.78 gear ratio because I have no overdrive and I would probably get 7 miles to the gallon. It has a TH350 transmission with only 3 gears. I also have a buick grandnational that has 400 rwhp and it does mid 11 quarter miles. When that turbo kicks it is a monster. I have a better than stock rebuild with 60lb injectors, 3inch down pipe, ported heads, pypes 2.5 exhaust, hotwire fuel pump kit, alcohol injection, and te60 turbo with garrett housing. Last car is a 92 gmc typhoon. Forged internals, ATR pitbull chip, pte 44 turbo, I'm in the process of updating the ignition system because of hard start issues. Little truck sounds amazing. Once I increase dependability it will split time with my 2015 jeep wrangler unlimited x games edition as my daily driver. Not as fast as the newer cars but 13 in the quarter for an suv is good enough for me. It hooks good with the all wheel drive.

My 67 has 233,000 miles, that a hell of a lot for any 1960s motor,l I used, 10-30 any kind will do but no synthetic oil, if the motor is a new rebuilt it ok to use synthetic from the start

If it is a numbers matching car Maybe instead change rear end gears, to 373 even 410 to make it faster a transmission shift kit, then drive or third gear wouldn't be so much like an O D
if it was a 4 speed standard ithink it would be a much faster car I think the second dipstick is your power steering fluid

Hey one of the best performance mods for that car would be a gear change in the rear end. Many older cars with automatics have highway gears.

In 67 and 68 you had gto ram air 3 chevelle with 427 or 454 you had roadrunners 440 6pack challenger 440. 426 hemis 427 corvettes 455 pontiacs all around 5.8-6.5 seconds to 60 7.3 0-60 is super slow in 68.

Most likely a 2bbl set up. Re jet the carb bump the timing to 12-14 degrees. Then change to a 4 bbl set up intake manifold and carb set up. Play with the timing some more.
