Apologies everyone! I realised too late that I had pronounced Undine incorrectly. The correct pronounciation is "Undeen"! I hope you enjoy the episode, and historical segment, regardless!
I also really enjoyed this. I'm bored with US and German perspectives. I loved the opening and thought you did well. I'd like more of a ships war log feel with anecdotes, perhaps drawn from other ships at the time. 'Ordinary Seaman Willis cut his hand on a tin of peas and needed some' medicine' to cheer him up...
@@alastairstuart5800 You and I are of the same mind! The German U-Boats are rightfully the darling submersibles of the period, but so little attention is given to the other submarines... HMS Upholder the submarine ace boat of Malta was a nightmare for the sinking of axis ships till the boat disappeared on her 25th patrol with all hands god let them rest in eternal patrol.
Thank you Wolfpack! It goes without saying I am a fan of your videos, as they inspired me to make this one! Hopefully both of our boats deployed in the Med at this time don't cross one another!
Apart from a bit of dodgy history during the intro (the war had only been going since Sept. 1939. so not "over a year"). This was a really enjoyable video. Well edited, with a nice relaxed commentary.
@@AmidshipsYT I never knew him, but as a volunteer he was clearly a lot braver than I will ever be. It was nice however to see the Tenth getting a mention
Little known fact: One of these sub, HMS Ursula, had the 'Ursula Suit' named after it. The ordinary Royal Navy oilskins of the time were clumsy and unsuited to submarine life so one of Ursula's officers, Lt Barklie Lakin, the Navigator (later Commanding Officer) paid the clothing company Barbour (the company still exists, selling top-end waxed-cotton jackets) to modify a one-piece motorcycle suit into a 2-piece suit with an added hood. It was rumoured that Barbour tested the new design by dressing Lakin in it, standing him against a wall and turning a fire-hose on him at full power). The result was so successful, it became the standard attire for submariners on watch for the rest of the war. After the war, the Ursula suit went full-circle and became the must-have attire for British motorcyclists. HMS Ursula served the British Navy in the Mediterranean and North Sea until 1944 when it was 'temporarily transferred' to the Russian Navy and renamed 'Soviet Svanetia'. It remained in Russian hands until 1950 when it was returned to Britain and subsequently scrapped the same year.
Fascinating! There's a lot of inventions that have come about as a result of British submarines! The Ursula suit, the Thetis catch... Thanks for watching!
Amazing! A channel recording Silent Hunter IV! Already subscribed! This game is a legend, and your channel is amazing! Nice quality of content, you have my subscription and all my support! 😎👍
This is excellent, truly excellent.. this is I think the first ever silent hunter for the Royal Navy ever seen on RUclips, if it isn't the first on RUclips.. then this certainly is the best ever seen so far with various mods. This is like the Silent hunter series made by Devin Horner.. your off to a great start, just excellent. Well done, looking forward to the next episode.. Well done mate 👏 👍
Wonderful stuff. I really hope you stick with it. I takes a long time to establish a channel, but on the strength of your first, really great efforts, I reckon you really have something ;)
don't know what RN procedure was, but i THINK procedure in American navy upon sighting an aircraft was to crash dive immediately and figure out aircraft nationality with periscope, if at all.
Huzzah! Finally a Royal Navy campaign!! Everyone being obsessed by the U boats is getting boring. Being a U Class, she's still technically a Uboat though! 😉 If I was being picky, "We Dive at Dawn" was set aboard an S boat heading off to the Baltic to sink the Brandenburg (Brandyballs) wasn't it? Seriously though I've only just found this and I'm really looking forward to following your exploits! Thanks for sharing.
fabulous RPG narrative, and good on you for picking a rather niche and under-represented aspect of the submarine genre. interesting mod. hope to see more.
This is actually really cool, first time I've ever seen a mod for the British subs, let alone an entire new campaign made around them from scratch. They definitely need to do some work on the interior though, if possible, as it's literally just the American S-Class interior from the base game.
It's a patchwork of mods, and yes there isn't an interior mod bundled in. Even if there was, I have already established this as the interior to HMS Umbra. If I get to upgrade my boat I will look into bolting on some more mods to add more detail and improve quality of life. Thanks for watching!
My understanding is that RN subs in the Mediterranean rarely surfaced during the day, due to the near constant presence of axis aircraft. Be interesting to see if the game ultimately forces you to adopt a similar policy. On the plus side, unlike the American Mk 14 torpedo the British Mk VIII torpedo was very reliable.
Given that I was being flanked almost immediately on leaving HMS Talbot by what I assume were two Fiat G.50 Freccias that certainly seems to be the case! Indeed the Mk VIII was so reliable continued service (with modifications) from 1925 right through to the 1980s the sinking of the Belgrano in the Falklands! I don't know if they have been coded into this mod, but we shall see when the time comes... Thanks for watching!
@@AmidshipsYT The RAF fighter pilots were probably at the beach enjoying the warm weather and the company of young Maltese ladies, rather than worrying about a few Italian fighters pestering one of their submarines just outside the harbour. Just typical, isn't it? To be fair, I think Malta's fighter garrison in 1940 was a handful of Gloster Gladiators, which does rather limit one's interception capabilities against even a mediocre monoplane like the G.50. As a submarine the ones to really worry about are probably the CANT patrol seaplanes and SM.79 bombers.
As Churchill famously said, "The term submarine is to be reserved for Allied under water vessels. U-Boats are those dastardly villains who sink our ships, while submarines are those gallant and noble craft which sink theirs.” 🙂
