Tokichiro (2) in particular is AMAZING. Tokichiro 1 is mournful and subdued, while 2 is pure determination and drive.

I’ve been wanting to recommend this game for a bit, the combat system is really good, can feel like you’re playing a fighting game character in a dark souls world.

Yeah you had it right, it's pronounced 'Knee-oh'.
Funny how you mentioned Dynasty Warriors cause it's published by the same company. And this dev team would go on to make a game about the Chinese Three Kingdoms stories later on (Called Wo Long)
But about Nioh. It's an action rpg designed sort of like Dark Souls, but it takes place in a fictionalized version of the Japanese feudal era. So real people show up, but there are magic spirits, japanese folklore characters, monsters, and powers and such. The MC is on the cover, he's loosely based on a person in history from England who shipwrecked in Japan and eventually stayed and lived there the rest of his life.

Nioh is an action RPG set mainly in 1600 Japan. The main character in the pic William is an Irish Sailor inspired by Williams Adams, an Englishman who became a Samurai. The soundtrack is pretty solid, and the two songs that stood out to me when I played it were Okatsu's boss theme and Saoirse's theme.

    Oh boy.
Other recommendations from Nioh (or in my case particularly from 2, which is often reorchestrated/reworked versions of music from 1):
Tokichiro, both parts. 1 is mournful and melancholic, while 2 is triumphant and determined. Two, even after all the time I've spent hearing it, with literal thousands of hours in the game, still leaves me with an excited feeling and goosebumps. The Daigoji temple theme, is basically Tokichiro's core themes mixed into a level theme, acting as the 'march' up to confront him, which is the primary climax of the main story.
White Tiger/Katsuie's theme, which is sort of despairing and gives an 'I will do what I must' feel. In both cases it is used for a 'noble' and good entity that has been corrupted and you've been forced to fight.
The fight theme from Minamoto no Yoshitsune, which you can TELL that the battle is designed as a dance-like duel just right from the moment the music starts, but fades in and out of an underpinning determination that illustrates the context of the fight isn't necessarily the joyful test of arms either character would want
Nightmare Bringer's theme, which is THE final boss of the series so far, being fought after multiple instances of time-travel shenanigans. The music carries the tone of an urgent push to finally end things, again with that current of stoic determination that is there throughout most of the soundtrack. Nightmare bringer in particular was actively designed as a 'dynamic' soundtrack, with it, iirc, actually switching sections mid-fight as the fight is going on, relative to the actions on-screen. This makes listening to it in isolation feel weird because you can VERY clearly hear where it was meant to transition and loop in segmented chunks.
The soyaha, which is a sort of 'echoes of what was lost' type of feel.
The interim, which is a peace of the grave feel. It's peaceful and haunting, but not 'happy'. Sort of an 'accepting and content with it' kind of emotion.
There's also 'eye of the beholder' which is a reworked version of the main theme, a bit more explosive and active.
Nioh as a whole, is not a particularly upbeat series, with both protagonists basically being stoic determinants fighting to keep moving forward as friends and foes alike change and warp around them, getting tossed with the current and having to make do.
Nioh 2 in particular, the protagonist is more 'along for the ride' in the first half, acting entirely reactive to events around them, until Nobunaga's death and the aftermath, where they begin to make steps on their own, charting their own course forward instead of simply following Tokichiro's desires as occurred earlier. The final mission of the base game has an oddly satisfying emotional payoff and closure to it. The DLCs, especially DLC 3, bring further closure into it, and ends with the protagonist having finally 'solved' the age-old family drama that started the problem leading to the events of the main game.
I personally feel Nioh 2's story has more emotional beats to it, despite the silent protagonist, as a lot of the storytelling is using the secondary characters around you and your character's body language to tell the story. That reliance on body language, to me, causes it to hit harder when stuff happens. It manages to feel far more expressive than William's voiced protagonist. The main problem with storytelling for 2, is the 'compression' of timescale. If you don't explicitly pay attention to the dates attached to the regions, then you don't realize how much time is actually passing. Which is masked by the player character and one of the humans with the most screen-time, both being ageless.
I also have to give credit for Nioh 2 creating an in-universe justification for the silent protagonist in the very first cutscene that occurs from their perspective, and how their status as a mute occasionally causes problems throughout the game, starting fights where there shouldn't be or otherwise effecting the flow of events.
I will also note that the English dub of Nioh 2 in particular is VERY much an aquired taste. It's aussie, kiwi, and proper british accents for characters that are supposed to be Japanese. It is VERY jarring and I never bothered to aquire the taste.
If you like 'souls' games but want more gameplay depth, and haven't tried the Nioh games? Pick up Nioh 2 on a sale. The stories aren't directly linked, and Nioh 2 is a much smoother ride than 1, with less jank and better QoL.
It has AMAZING gameplay mechanics, a diablo-style loot loop (that can be ignored entirely if all you want to do is beat the first playthrough) NG+ that does a little more than just inflate health values, mixing up enemy placements, which enemies are on a given level, attack patterns and properties of attacks. It's character creator is also quite something.

Nioh is wonderful. I hope that there's requests for some of the boss themes from Nioh 1 and 2, because they *slap*, especially 2s. Enenra, Yatsu-No-Kami, Kasha, Tokichiro II, and Otakemaru are all *fantastic*.

Jesse so when I first heard this track it was within the game. Nioh setting is sometime in a the Shogun period and some historical figures are in this game, like Nobunaga. Speaking of Nobunaga I recall hearing this on the level where you approach Nobunagas castle. Its snowy and beautiful on the surface.. but as you explore you find out its but a shell of what it was; its monster filled with the undead after the fall of Nobunaga and his castle.
So when I first heard the "Mysterious" track within the game I essentially felt the tragedy in the scene before me with the context of knowing what happens to Nobunaga, his family and his empire. There is also some feeling is mystique as well.. which is prevalent in this game.

I know a little bit about what kind of game this is and the setting, but I have terrible reflexes in games like this so I haven't played it. The vibes I get from the second track remind me of Narnia Battle, particularly at the end when things are looking bleak. I feel like something major is going down and it seems like you wont be able to achieve your goal at the time, but you're still determined to see it through no matter what. It doesn't match the name, Mysterious, but that was all I could think of while listening.

Theres not alot of memorable music in Nioh but the main theme is definitely one of the ones I can remember and even hum to. Even some feelings of hype the few times you hear that melody.
Sadly the only other song that comes to mind to me is a Boss theme from 2 cause I found the central hook extremely annoying with its discordant clashing (its so piercing in the mix that its all you hear when running the fight). Its how the song is designed on purpose though. Its also not as bad when you listen to it on its own.
Most of the songs are very orchestral with Japanese folk instruments I think. Heavy on strings. Also tends to be dark and oppressive in tone. I don't even remember when Mysterious plays in my mind's eye.
Nioh 2 is one of my go to action RPGs. I love it as a coop game, I think its combat system is near perfect. Its quality of life and diversity in what you can even do, makes it always feel satisfying and fresh.
