What an amazing guy, I hope to talk to him one day, found this through the song read about seymour, one of my favourite songs of all time - I also tried out that Epic Soundtracks experiment, running upstairs and turning on all the taps, then running downstairs and turning on all the taps, then turning them off. It didn't do anything, maybe the pumping system in the 70s was a bit more interesting lol.

Stunned that there is absolutely no mention of or allusion to Richard Scaldwell / Earle / aka Biggles though he was a founder member and co-eval from start to finish of the band (and even rurther as the maps all made their solo albums, Richard, Jowe and Epic were doing the recordings on the same street in North London. was there a falling out? All the worse as at the time of this interview both Nikki and Epic were deceased and only Jowe and Richard (unlike Phones) flew the flag. Richard, however, was/is no longer a practising rockstar (sic) . A bit like making a beatles doc without mentioning George. What's up there? Bad editing? Or Jowe airbrushing history. Weird in the extreme, and more than slightly sinister, as it is unnecessary. Odd.
+Rusty we recorded quite a bit of interview material and he mentioned Richard plenty. His first sentence in this piece is referring to Richard introducing them to Stockhausen. Earle was just less interested in live playing and rock music, but no falling out.
+manyspaceships very happy to hear that there was no falling out. (I used to share a house with Rich and Epic, when Jowe lived across the road, in Stoke Newington, London, 81, 82, 83). They were still good mates at that time, indeed they shared a TEAC 4 track tape machine on which Richard and Jowe recorded their solo albums, simultaneously (wrap up the machine, run across the road with it) that'd be Egg Store Ilk and Pincer Movement - the same time as Epic was playing with Red Crayola (Kangaroo?)And Yes, Richard did not enjoy gigging at all, so he's gone on to his other love - vintage racing cars, he's quite an accomplished specialist mechanic. Clearasil record - stuck. Brilliant. Only had one LP by Swellmaps - Whatever Happens Next. Loved it and still have it. Jowe is a lovely guy. Great to see.
Blur on occasion and particularly Franz Ferdinand sounded very much like SMs to me. Like Epic. Nikki turned up in these rock star clothes, I remember him standing in Dave Kusworth's kitchen. It was incongruos. Socially. Dave's house was a terraced one in the rough backstreets of Birmingham, and actually I did relate to his dandyism. Nikki liked The Hawks image, The Rag Dolls were doing well locally but really, Nikki had his eye on Dave for what became Jacobites. ML In truth, Dave and I were pretty much oblivious of The Swell Maps. It was only much later on I began to realise how well known and influential they were.
