- So, when I first started running this game, I didn't think it would be that bad to run. But after I broke down the game and were getting better, faster strats, that's when I found out just how insane this game really is. Everything is random...the enemy AI, the item drops (the ? ones), even some dialog. On top of that, random glitches can happen that will completely ruin a run. If you wanna see a good example, look through my videos for the reset glitch.
I have had so many run get ruined just by random bullshit, most that will cost me a lot of time, and most of the time, I can't do anything about it except just deal with it. That's pretty much what I did with this run. It can be improved somewhat, but the game is so random, you're damn lucky if you even make it through the game at all.

People are like: oh this game is so short. Dude trust me, if you don't know this game inside out, it takes days to finish it. Hell, who am I kidding, 90% of the people never finished this game. Nowadays, with emulator you can save, but back in the days, this game had no save and no continue, if you die you are done, most people didn't make pass chapter 1.
redpanda416 I played it on sega megadrive 2 and wouldnt say it was hard to finish it (ofc not so fast). imo cuthroat island or lion king were a bit harder games to complete.
Yeah I played lion king too, there are some really hard part in that game, but with unlimited continues you can eventually pass them. The hard part for the comic zone is if you get a game over it's really over, you have to start from the very beginning, so you have to make it in one play through.

Well with Each chapter you complete you get a continue. But I'd say Lion King although with more continues, is a bit harder. Comix Zone is a great game though, took me about an hour to complete it.

Definitely tough, but I remember beating it a few times as a kid. It's such a short game, so you really get to know it well replaying over and over as you die.

I got to a point where I would clear it in about 25 minutes several times a week for a period of my life lol. This video is so much faster though - was a fun trip down memory lane

I beat the game today after watching this and trying to emulate it step by step. Loved this game as a kid, but never finished it. 20 years later, as a 30 year old dude, I finally scratched that itch. Thank you so much for this:)
A very impressive, and hard worked for speed run of a game I loved as a kid. 6 year old me never stood a chance, but damn if I didn't play the first two-three levels all the time just to hear the music. Great job :)

Watching this was like watching a perfectly choreographed ballet. Especially your paper-airplane throws. Just... Damn, dude.

I would say using the paper airplane in-between rooms was probably a form of glitch or unintended mechanics. Also using the invincibility frames when you get damaged to pass through certain obstacles e.g. 7:12 seems likes its bypassing the game designers intention for you to destroy obstacles. None of that matters though, since we cant read the game designers minds weather or not something is a glitch is ultimately an opinion. Find and using glitches is a skill of it's own.
Nice speedrun. I personally beat the game for about 21-22 min without rushing that much and honestly I never thought that the paper plane could be used like that. I'm gonna try it.

So it looks like the secret of the game is to first know you can do the paper airplane move and then do it in all the right spots.
Whats really cool about this run through... Its so much faster than any of mine. And I think most people would consider me to be good at this game... But, I also think you can shave some time off this speed run. I think it could be done just a bit faster as you had some boss trouble in stage 2 and a few other bits where you got held up. But, by and large you are a smooth dedicated player.

I use to be able to beat this game reliably when I was a kid in under 25 minutes. Yes, a few times I would flub a jump and die in a chapter 1 stage 1 or die at the end of level 2 stage 1... Some people say this game is hard... It is and it isn't. You just have to stick with it. It took me a couple of months to beat the game. But, since this is a game I consider to be one of the best on the console, wasn't really that much of a chore to stick with it. Plus each game play is unique due to the nature of the combat of the game. Enemies will block and behave just a bit different to keep you on your toes.
When I started to replay this game I could get to Level 3 easily... Took me awhile to relearn the best route and strategy. And now I am back to beating the game easily in under 25 minutes.
I never beat it as a kid because I didn't know about the paper airplanes. Now I know that it isn't hard at all. All I had to know about was a super special 1 hit weapon that insta kills bosses.

Bloody hell, I had the PC port of this on my Windows 95 PC and somehow never knew you could do paper planes. I got very good at this game and loved it, but not sure if I ever made it passed level 3. Great to see it tamed!
I never knew about the planes either man and played it as a kid on Sega Genesis. Out of atleast 1000 tries I only made it to level 4 like twice
I didn't know people speed run comic zone no matter how hard it is with 1 life , no continues this dude that made the video made it possible. That people could beat pass chapter 1... I didn't know it was short to Begin with but man I thought sonic spin ball was hard. That game only have 3 boss levels. Lol
I too used to beat this game pretty quickly, not this fast but fast. But there's some kicks in here he did that I never learned how to do.

Overall a very nice speedrun, very smart usage of airplanes. The grandpa fight went wrong, but this guy is really tough and hard to predict.

Yeah, for real. Made the game not fun as a kid. If that didn't happen it would have been fun and hard. Like, do anything else to add toughness to the game besides losing health when you hit stuff.

Remember this, for some reason back then there was no save or continue, tough and to be honest buggy, a shame really as a side-crolling comic beat'em up this was a very inventive concept.
The ? item is random only the 1st time when you pick it, after that it's contents roll every time you duck. Once you have picked one ?, you can get any item you want in others.

Can you be a bit more specific? As in, do you have to be in the same room with the "?" item? In which order do the items roll in? Does it reset when you die for the first time? (When you have extra lives)
Mr. Miguelacho it has been a while since i last played the game, but i think that the "?" contents is unique to each level or room. I just do not remember exactly. If you have an emulator with slots, you can test it.

Those question mark pickups always mess me up. Its such a gamble that they always blow me up causing damage making it way harder than it should be trying to beat the game.
It's impossible to kill the dragon mum with the paper airplane + flying kick. You need far more than that.
I did a bit of research and apparently there's a poorly documented glitch that instantly kills the first boss if you get hit with the paper plane and it pushes you inside it. Even if you're not attacking. That's really weird behavior

I played the game when i was 8years old. And i always died on last page. Step by step memorize, check all items with rat. They should reborn this game. This top 3 sega genesis game

i remember playing this as a kid , i knew about the paper planes but i always thought "i hurt myself to much" , looking back i took more damage trying to fight enemies XD
And BTW , if the game is so random why did you collect the 2 ? near the begining of the last page ? if i remember correctly , sometimes those blew up in my face , guess you were lucky you got 2 hp pots :D

I had this game as a kid and could never beat it. I never knew about the paper airplanes though... I would of definitely beat it if I knew about that. I want to know if anyone else can get to level 4 without using the airplanes at all

So overall well done. And also, ya this game is hard. I played it on the Sega CD pack back in the day and IM sure I never beat it. But it's a really nice game.
