Nice review! You can actually complete missions in the open world mode as well, you just need to craft the mission board (Orbital Exchange Interface)

Yes I think at the end of the video you can see me placing the mission board. It takes a while of playing to be able to craft the board and, to be honest, the first couple of missions it showed me were pretty simple/lame. That being said, it was more than a lot of these crafting games offer, so I wasn't exactly upset.

@@strategyforbusypeopleThere are those "simple" missions, but there are Operations as well. Those are the exact same missions as the mission mode, but in the open world.

Bought the game to scratch that survival itch. I was looking for something that is a bit more realistic-looking without zombies and this seems to be it!

Thanks for sharing this game I am now very interested. But I just have one question. Can you disable the dropping items on death feature. It is one of my most hated features on games.

    • @strategyforbusypeople

It definitely drops your kit on death. However, that might be a feature you can turn off, and the game has somewhat of a mod community. It's worth looking into!

Isn't there some kind of timer on the world or the mission or something? Or did they change that? One of the reasons I avoided this game was the thought that all my stuff was going to get wiped and I would have to start again. I wish you would have mentioned that aspect. I guess you start from scratch again for every mission or something like that? Would have been nice if you mentioned how that worked for people not familiar with the game. Anyway good luck with your channel, have a like for the algorithm.

      You are 100% correct.
Missions do have a time limit, but I found that the time limits were usually extremely generous. They weren't even too bad when you cranked up the difficulty level.
Every time you start a new mission you start with only the equipment you bring in your launch pod with you. You have to rebuild a base from scratch each time. I actually didn't find it that onerous. You get pretty good at figuring out exactly the kind of base you want, and where you want it, and the game isn't so grindy that the initial build of a base is horrible. I totally get that some people want to just keep building upon building, and you can use the regular survival long-term mode for that. I just found that the discrete missions were much more enjoyable and purposeful, and that's what kept me going.
I wrote this review (the script) quite some time after playing, so I had actually forgotten about the time limits and restarts. Good catch, so thanks for your comment and like!

@@strategyforbusypeople Do you mind if ask what dlc you have for Icarus? All of it? I noticed there is quite a lot but some of them don't have good reviews on steam so I don't know if I will get it all if I picked it up.

    • @strategyforbusypeople
      @strategyforbusypeople  8 месяцев назад +1

@@flankspeed007 I actually was not using any of the DLC. This is 100% vanilla, no mods. I took a quick look at the DLC and here's what I remember:
"Outpost" is a mode in the game where I don't think you can die. It's basically a sandbox-type mode. If literally 100% aimless/pointless building for the sake of building is your thing, the outpost DLCs are just new locations.
The two expansions legitimately add features/functions and missions to the game.
The content packs appear to just be decorations.
So, Icarus + the two expansions is probably the best value if that goes on sale. But the base game will keep you occupied for quite some time.
Note that in the "regular" survival mode, there is a radio thing you can build that will give you missions, but they are much smaller/shorter than the straight-up mission mode. In my review video you can see me placing the radio board at some point, I think.

@@flankspeed007 I definitely had some challenges trying to run at 4K on a 3080GTX with a decent CPU. The game can be a hog. Good luck!

a three scale rating xd? you should improve upon that haha. :P. even 5 stars can be very basic.
0: unplayable. either its abandonware or developer scam or so buggy you get stuck in campaign or corrupted saves, desktop crashes every 2 hours or less, etc.
1: playable but worst quality of playable games one can get, basically all about it is trash. gameplay loop makes no fun, its barely functional. (dumb shit >75%)
2: average bad game some nieche players might enjoy despite the buggs and bad mechanics (dumb shit >50%)
3: average good game with some minor bugs and a few things that could be improved in the mechanics (dumb shit > 25%)
4: good game: pretty much bug free; has good mechanics; the stuff that gets 80%+ rating on steam and is liked by most players. (dumb shit > 5%)
5: you are suprised how good it is. no bugs, novel mechanics that are well implemented, some Quality of life shenanigans, free updates, it has suprisingly much content for the games price, its moddable, it just has it all and might be in top 5 games this year. (for you at least, assuming you play like a 100 different ones).
but seriously, i once considered buying the game in EA, now that i have read on steam what the gready bastards have done, i wont give them a single cent, doesent matter if the game is decent or not, there are enough survival games out there for me to not have to support assholes.
in case you dont know, they had a roadmap when you bought the EA version so you would expect you get the game (with all roadmap features) cheaper for being an early supporter that doesent know if the game gets ever finished or GOOD if it does. (Buyer holds a risk, therefore he gets the later released full version cheaper at the time of EA.) instead of releasing the roadmap as updates for the EA buyers, they added it as DLC content that was fucking expensive to top it off. they only have the guts to repsond to the comments saying they banned a lot of people who had improvement ideas for the game (if true, hilarious, might be rage-bait from disappointed EA players though, who knows.), but dont respond to the top (10x times more "helpful" emojies) comments on steam, pointing out how they basically did the EA buyers dirty as fuck and scammed them.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not trying to compete with metacritic or IGN on hardcore and specific reviews. This is supposed to be more fun than that.
Thanks also for sharing the history on Icarus. TIL!
